À propos des huiles botaniques

L'utilisation des huiles botaniques remonte à des milliers d'années, avec des racines dans des cultures aussi diverses que les anciens Sumériens, les Chinois et l'Empire romain.[1]  Les huiles botaniques sont préparées à partir de la plante entière, préservant son parfum, ses principaux ingrédients actifs et l'essence de la plante. Les huiles botaniques issues de diverses plantes ont été utilisées tout au long de l'histoire pour honorer les dieux,[2] préparer les corps pour les funérailles,[3] préserver la beauté, aider à l'hygiène et traiter une grande variété de conditions médicales.

Les instructions pour la préparation et l'utilisation des plantes comme médicament sont cataloguées dans les œuvres de Dioscoride, De materia medica[4], dès le premier siècle. La technologie moderne a permis d'identifier et d'étudier les parties actives des plantes pour leur rôle dans la santé et leur utilité contre diverses affections médicales. La valeur des huiles botaniques a résisté à l'épreuve du temps.  

Les propriétés des oranges

On pense que l'orange est originaire des régions tropicales d'Asie, d'où elle s'est répandue en Inde, sur la côte est de l'Afrique et dans la Méditerranée orientale. Le développement des routes commerciales arabes et la diffusion de l'islam ont fait voyager l'orange à travers le monde. Bien que l'orange soit un fruit tropical, les arbres poussent mieux là où il y a un léger gel en hiver.[5] Le nom original de l'orange vient du mot sanskrit « naranga », qui provient du mot tamoul « naru » signifiant parfumé.[6]  

Types d'oranges

Les orangers sont les arbres fruitiers les plus cultivés au monde, et il existe plusieurs variétés ou cultivars d'orange, dont le nom latin est Citrus sinensis. Différents cultivars sont cultivés en fonction de leur adaptation aux différentes périodes de l'année et aux conditions du sol. Aux États-Unis, la Californie produit principalement les cultivars « Washington Navel » et « Valencia », tandis que la Floride produit les cultivars « Hamlin », « Pineapple » et « Valencia ».[7]

Les cultivars populaires listés ci-dessus sont des oranges douces appréciées pour leur jus. Dans le monde entier, les fruits amers sont consommés pour stimuler la digestion. Il existe plusieurs variétés d'oranges amères, dont Citrus Aurantium cultivé au Vietnam, utilisé dans des liqueurs telles que le Triple Sec, le Grand Marnier et le Curacao. Le Daidai, variété de C. Aurantium, est utilisé à des fins thérapeutiques dans la médecine chinoise et japonaise et échangé lors du Nouvel An japonais pour apporter la longévité.[8]

L'orange amère de Séville est utilisée dans les marmelades en raison de sa forte teneur en pectine, et l'orange chinotto est un arôme dans les liqueurs, y compris le Campari. L'huile d'orange est extraite des peaux de plusieurs variétés, y compris l'orange douce de Valence, Citrus aurantium, et la variété amère Bergamote, dont l'huile est un arôme bien connu du thé Earl Grey.[9]

Nutriments

L'orange est un fruit célèbre pour sa couleur orange vif et sa richesse en vitamine C, et en effet chaque tasse de tranches d'orange fournit près de 100 mg de vitamine C. Ses nutriments moins connus incluent le potassium, le phosphore, le magnésium, le folate et la vitamine A.[10]

L'orange contient également une gamme d'acides gras, principalement des acides gras insaturés, notamment linoléique, palmitique, linolénique et vaccénique.[11] L'alcaloïde principal des oranges amères est la para-synéphrine.[12] La pectine est une fibre soluble dans l'eau que l'on trouve dans les fruits et légumes. Elle est abondante dans l'orange, une partie provenant de la pulpe de l'orange, mais elle est plus présente dans la peau. Dans la plante elle-même, la pectine aide à lier les cellules végétales entre elles, ce qui soutient la forme du fruit.

Au fil du temps, les enzymes de la plante digèrent la pectine, comme on le remarque dans un fruit mûrissant qui perd sa rigidité. Le niveau de pectine présent dans les oranges varie de 0,25 à 0,76 pour cent. C'est une large gamme dépendant de la variété d'orange et de la maturité du fruit.[13] La pectine, en tant que source de fibres, réduit le cholestérol[14] et aide à réguler la glycémie.  

Le saviez-vous ? oranges

Le fruit de l'orange mûrit alors que l'extérieur de l'orange est encore vert. Grâce à la pratique du « dégagement de la couleur », l'orange utilise l'éthylène (l'hormone de vieillissement des plantes) pour mûrir les oranges après la récolte, créant la couleur orange vif.[15] Le dégagement de la couleur doit se faire dans des conditions soigneusement contrôlées, sinon cela peut entraîner la pourriture et d'autres problèmes pour le fruit.[16]  

Préparation de l'huile d'orange

Les huiles essentielles de l'orange sont extraites de la peau orange vif. Cette peau extérieure des agrumes s'appelle le « flavedo », et elle est couverte de petites glandes. Chaque glande contient une goutte d'huile essentielle. Pour extraire l'huile organique, la peau doit être physiquement brisée.[17] Les principaux composants de l'huile d'orange diffèrent quelque peu entre une orange douce et une huile d'orange amère.  

Expression ou Pression à froid

L'expression fait référence au processus de décomposition lente de la peau d'orange sous pression mécanique pour libérer les huiles des glandes de l'écorce. Ce procédé utilise l'écuelle à piquer, ou un appareil conçu pour extraire les huiles des écorces de fruits.

Cela a commencé en France avec un bol garni d'aiguilles pour piquer la peau du fruit, et un entonnoir pour recueillir les huiles libérées. Il a été modernisé pour s'adapter aux pratiques commerciales, mais utilise les mêmes principes de piqûre et d'agitation de l'écorce.[18]

Les huiles d'orange amère sont obtenues par pression à froid.[19] Pressé à froid signifie que l'huile a été extraite à basse température. La basse température préserve l'huile volatile, qui fournit le parfum riche de la plante. Le meilleur rendement des écorces d'orange semble provenir d'une écorce préalablement séchée. La composition de l'huile collectée varie selon la maturité de la plante et la variété d'orange utilisée.[20]

Toutes les variétés d'orange produisent des huiles volatiles très riches en hydrocarbure monoterpénique, le limonène. La saveur de l'huile provient de ses hydrocarbures sesquiterpéniques. L'hespéridine et d'autres flavonoïdes sont abondants dans les écorces, mais ils se décomposent rapidement lors du traitement.[21]

Extraction par distillation

L'extraction par distillation consiste à exposer une plante à de l'eau ou de la vapeur pour décomposer le matériau végétal et libérer l'huile essentielle. Les huiles sont refroidies et condensées pour être collectées. La distillation est utilisée pour l'extraction de l'orange, en utilisant soit le fruit entier, soit l'écorce.[22]

L'huile d'écorce d'orange distillée à la vapeur ne contiendra pas le résidu cireux qu'une huile pressée à froid contiendrait. Cela les rend moins susceptibles d'obstruer les diffuseurs d'huile, de tacher les tissus et, étant moins biologiquement actives, prolonge leur durée de conservation.[23] La distillation permet également d'éliminer les furocoumarines des huiles d'orange.

Les furocoumarines ont été identifiées comme photocancérogènes, ce qui signifie que lorsqu'elles sont exposées à la lumière, ces composés peuvent provoquer des mutations cellulaires menant au cancer. Cela est important pour les produits de soin laissés sur la peau qui pourraient être parfumés à l'huile d'orange. La toxicité n'est pas observée dans les produits à rincer,[24] mais il existe des preuves que boire régulièrement du jus d'orange provoque une photosensibilité pouvant conduire au cancer de la peau.[25]

Médecine traditionnelle chinoise et utilisations de l'huile d'orange

Les écorces de C. Aurantium et de la mandarine plus douce (Citrus reticulate) sont utilisées en médecine chinoise. L'orange est considérée efficace pour dégager les obstructions.[26] Les écorces sont principalement utilisées pour améliorer la digestion, soulageant les gaz et les ballonnements. Lorsque des symptômes de troubles digestifs, tels que diarrhée ou constipation, surviennent avec des symptômes respiratoires de mucus et de congestion thoracique, les écorces d'orange amère sont utilisées pour les traiter ensemble.[27]  



Antimicrobien topique

Alors que le problème des organismes résistants aux antimicrobiens se répand, l'intérêt pour les sources végétales d'antifongiques, d'antibiotiques et d'agents antiviraux a augmenté. L'huile d'orange amère a été étudiée pour son succès dans le traitement des infections microbiennes, telles que le pied d'athlète et la teigne. L'huile d'orange a démontré une efficacité prometteuse contre les champignons,[28] bien qu'utilisée pure, elle puisse être quelque peu irritante pour la peau.[29] L'huile d'orange Valencia pressée à froid et sans terpènes ainsi qu'un extrait de limonène inhibent tous deux la croissance des espèces Campylobacter et Arcobacter de germes.[30]  



Aromathérapie

L'huile essentielle parfumée d'orange a montré qu'elle réduisait l'anxiété avant les opérations, chez des patients en attente de soins dentaires,[31] et chez des enfants subissant des soins dentaires. Ces effets ne reposaient pas sur des auto-évaluations, mais ont été démontrés par une baisse des fréquences cardiaques et des niveaux de cortisol salivaire.[32]



Dans une étude comparant les auto-évaluations d'anxiété et la pression artérielle systolique chez des patients exposés à l'huile de néroli de C. Aurantium ou à un placebo lors d'une coloscopie, il a été montré que la baisse physiologique de la pression artérielle se produisait même en présence d'anxiété.[33]  



Santé cardiovasculaire

L'orange riche en antioxydants est utile pour améliorer le flux sanguin à travers les vaisseaux. Les dommages endothéliaux causés par l'obésité se sont améliorés chez des adolescents à qui on a donné des capsules de C. aurantium séché pendant seulement un mois. Des essais plus longs sont nécessaires, mais cela soutient un corpus plus large de recherches sur les flavonoïdes et les antioxydants abondants dans les pelures d'orange et leur capacité à réparer les parois des vaisseaux sanguins.[34]  



Perte de poids

L'alcaloïde principal dans les oranges amères est le p-synéphrine et il a été au centre de certaines controverses. En tant qu'ingrédient courant dans les compléments pour la perte de poids sans éphedrine, des recommandations mettent en doute sa sécurité. Le p-synéphrine est un agoniste bêta, ce qui signifie qu'il augmente la dégradation des graisses et la production d'énergie.



Un agent similaire, la meta-synéphrine, ne se trouve pas naturellement dans les oranges, mais est parfois synthétisé et ajouté aux compléments pour la perte de poids. Alors que le p-synéphrine ne se lie pas aux récepteurs du corps qui augmentent la pression artérielle, le m-synéphrine le fait.[35] Les inquiétudes concernant le p-synéphrine ne semblent pas fondées, mais elles persistent.[36] La synéphrine de l'orange amère est une substance interdite par la National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).[37]  



Usages traditionnels

L'huile d'orange a été utilisée pour améliorer le « sang fatigué », très probablement l'anémie, ainsi que la fatigue due aux infections virales, les impuretés de la peau, la perte de cheveux, les ecchymoses, la douleur et les engelures. Elle a été utilisée pour plusieurs affections oculaires, notamment les paupières enflées et les saignements de la rétine. Très probablement grâce à son action antimicrobienne, elle a été utilisée pour traiter les escarres.[38]  


Questions sur l'huile d'orange

Que dois-je rechercher dans une huile d'orange ? Les huiles essentielles d'orange pressées à froid sont généralement pâles, mais peuvent varier selon la saison et le type d'orange utilisé. Elles doivent sentir fortement l'orange, bien que l'huile de néroli issue d'oranges amères puisse avoir une odeur différente de l'arôme d'agrumes attendu. Si l'huile a été distillée, elle sera claire et peut être plus fluide qu'une huile pressée, car toutes les cires et résidus auront été éliminés lors du traitement. Si vous l'utilisez comme agent topique qui restera sur la peau, recherchez une huile d'orange sans psoralène.   

Si je suis allergique aux agrumes, puis-je utiliser de l'huile d'orange ? Si vous êtes allergique à un type d'agrume, ou si vous n'êtes pas sûr d'avoir une allergie aux agrumes, il faut éviter l'huile d'orange, même en usage topique. La réaction IgE qui se produit chez une personne allergique à l'orange semble provoquer une réaction croisée avec le pollen, donc si vous savez que vous avez une forte allergie au pollen, consultez votre médecin avant d'essayer l'huile d'agrumes.[39]  

Est-il sûr d'utiliser de l'huile d'orange sur les enfants ? N'utilisez pas d'huile d'orange sur la peau des enfants s'ils vont s'exposer au soleil. Cela peut augmenter leur risque de coups de soleil et de cancer de la peau. L'orange, en tant que membre de la famille des agrumes, est un allergène courant, donc surveillez attentivement les signes de réaction allergique. N'utilisez jamais d'huile d'orange non diluée sur la peau et surveillez toujours toute irritation lors de l'utilisation de préparations contenant des huiles essentielles sur la peau. Les allergies peuvent se développer avec le temps. Ne donnez jamais d'huile essentielle par voie interne à un enfant. Une goutte d'huile essentielle diluée dans une huile porteuse appliquée sur les pieds suffit pour bénéficier des effets chez un enfant.  

Quelle est la durée de conservation de l'huile d'orange ? Conservée dans de bonnes conditions, l'huile d'orange ne dure qu'environ neuf à douze mois. Elle doit être stockée dans une bouteille sombre, dans un endroit frais et sombre, car la lumière et la chaleur l'oxydent. Surveillez l'apparition d'une opacification ou d'une odeur désagréable, signes qu'elle est périmée.  

Puis-je l'utiliser sur ma peau ? L'huile d'orange seule est très irritante pour la peau. Même utilisée comme antifongique topique, elle doit être diluée pour ne représenter que 25 % ou moins de la solution. L'huile d'orange sur la peau exposée au soleil est photosensibilisante, ce qui peut augmenter votre risque de coup de soleil, et photocancérogène, ce qui peut accroître le risque de cancer de la peau. Cela ne se produira pas avec l'utilisation de produits qui se rincent, tels que les shampooings ou les savons, car ils ne laissent pas les furocoumarines sur la peau. Faites preuve de prudence avec les huiles d'orange dans les produits utilisés sur la peau exposée au soleil, comme les lotions.  

Précautions et considérations

Faites preuve de prudence avec l'huile d'orange ou toute huile d'agrumes sur la peau. Elles sont photosensibilisantes et peuvent augmenter le risque de coup de soleil ou accroître le risque de cancer de la peau. Si vous êtes à haut risque de cancer de la peau, il peut y avoir une raison d'être prudent avec la consommation de jus d'orange, car les huiles présentes dans le jus et la pulpe peuvent également être photosensibilisantes.

Bien que le jus d'orange soit sûr à boire, ne prenez jamais d'huiles essentielles par voie interne. Le jus d'orange, comme son congénère agrume le pamplemousse, peut avoir un certain effet sur la façon dont vous métabolisez les médicaments. Si vous prenez des médicaments, demandez à votre médecin quel est un niveau sûr de consommation de jus d'orange pour vous.  

 On m'a appris - et il y a des informations de Robert Tisserand - que l'huile d'orange douce n'est pas phototoxique. Les précautions de sécurité à prendre pour l'orange amère ne sont pas nécessaires avec l'orange douce.
