When it comes to the many essential oils that are available to choose from, they often run the gamut as far as interesting or peculiar names. Balsam of Peru almost sounds like an actual location one would go to on vacation - not necessarily an effective essential oil.
The resinous substance that is Balsam of Peru is extracted from a tree called myroxlon balsamum. The oil is naturally thick and has a very fragrant, pleasant smell that sometimes resembles that of a mixture between vanilla and clove. As a natural antioxidant, stimulant, anti-inflammatory and expectorant, it can be used in many different ways.

Respiratory Conditions
If you suffer from chronic bronchitis, ashma, pneumonia or even seasonal allergies, this could definitely be an oil that you would want to keep on hand. It is incredibly beneficial for tempering and even eliminating a cough.
This is because it's expectorant features help to flush out the unnecessary and bothersome amounts of phlegm that may start to gather in your lungs and constrict your airways, making it more difficult to get a full, deep breath. Three to four drops of this oil used in a vaporizer or a diffuser allows it to fill the room with its aroma. You'll notice that it will become easier and easier to breath.
Sore Muscles
If you're the type of person that gets easily sore, whether from an exercise routine or from standing or walking long hours, this oil will definitely help relieve some of your discomfort. Mix a couple of drops of Balsam of Peru oil in with a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba and massage it into your troubled spots.
The oil will help to reduce any inflammation or tenderness you may be feeling. You can apply the oil to the affected area twice a day. Within a few hours you'll start to notice a difference.
Stress Relief
We all tend to live very stressful, busy lives. At any given time we can have a whole host of responsibilities and demands that we need to meet in order for things to go smoothly and run as they should. This can contribute to enormous amounts of pressure and anxiety.
This oil can help combat that feeling. It is incredibly soothing to the senses and upon breathing it into your system, it can alter your mood and alleviate stress. If you are suffering from mental exhaustion or find it hard to sleep, try adding a couple of drops of this oil to your bath water.
You can even soak a cotton ball in the oil and put it in your car or at your desk. It will have you feeling calmer and more centered in no time.
Dry Skin
You'll want to try this oil if you suffer from skin that dries easily - especially if you have a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis, which often leaves your skin heavily affected, chapped and dry. A mixture of this oil and a carrier oil will treat your skin and greatly improve how it feels and looks.
