Sobre Óleos Botânicos

O uso de óleos botânicos pode ser rastreado há milhares de anos, com raízes em culturas tão diversas quanto os antigos sumérios, chineses e o Império Romano.[1]  Óleos botânicos são preparados a partir da planta inteira, preservando seu aroma, os principais ingredientes ativos e a essência da planta. Óleos botânicos feitos de várias plantas foram usados ao longo da história para honrar deuses,[2] preparar corpos para funerais,[3] preservar a beleza, auxiliar na higiene e tratar uma ampla variedade de condições médicas.

Instruções para o preparo e uso de plantas como remédio estão catalogadas nas obras de Dioscórides, De materia medica[4], lá no primeiro século. A tecnologia moderna permitiu que as partes ativas das plantas fossem identificadas e estudadas por seu papel na saúde e sua utilidade contra várias condições médicas. O valor dos óleos botânicos resistiu ao teste do tempo.  

As Propriedades das Laranjas

Acredita-se que a laranja seja nativa de áreas tropicais da Ásia, de onde se espalhou para a Índia, a costa leste da África e o Mediterrâneo oriental. O desenvolvimento das rotas comerciais árabes e a expansão do Islã levaram a laranja ao redor do globo. Embora a laranja seja uma fruta tropical, as árvores crescem melhor onde há uma leve geada no inverno.[5] O nome original da laranja vem da palavra sânscrita “naranga,” que vem da palavra tâmil “naru” que significa fragrante.[6]  

Tipos de Laranjas

As laranjeiras são as árvores frutíferas mais cultivadas no mundo, e existem várias variedades ou cultivares da laranja, cujo nome latino é Citrus sinensis. Diferentes cultivares são cultivados com base em quão bem eles prosperam em diferentes épocas do ano e em diferentes condições de solo. Nos EUA, a Califórnia produz principalmente as cultivares “Washington Navel” e “Valencia” e a Flórida produz as “Hamlin,” “Pineapple” e “Valencia.”[7]

As cultivares populares listadas acima são laranjas doces valorizadas por seu suco. Ao redor do mundo, frutas amargas são consumidas para estimular a digestão. Existem várias variedades de laranja azeda, incluindo Citrus Aurantium cultivada no Vietnã, que é usada em licores como Triple Sec, Grand Marnier e Curacao. A Daidai, variedade de C. Aurantium, é usada terapeuticamente na medicina chinesa e japonesa e trocada no Ano Novo japonês para trazer longevidade.[8]

A laranja azeda de Sevilha é usada em marmeladas devido ao seu alto teor de pectina, e a laranja chinotto é um aromatizante em licores incluindo Campari. O óleo de laranja é extraído das cascas de várias variedades, incluindo a doce laranja Valencia, Citrus aurantium, e a variedade azeda Bergamota, cujo óleo é um sabor bem conhecido no chá Earl Grey.[9]

Nutrientes

A laranja é uma fruta famosa por sua cor laranja brilhante e rica em vitamina C, e de fato cada xícara de fatias de laranja fornece quase 100mg de vitamina C. Seus nutrientes menos conhecidos incluem potássio, fósforo, magnésio, folato e vitamina A.[10]

A laranja contém uma variedade de ácidos graxos também, principalmente ácidos graxos insaturados, incluindo linoleico, palmítico, linolênico e vaccênico.[11] O principal alcaloide nas laranjas amargas é a para-sinefrina.[12] A pectina é uma fibra solúvel em água encontrada em frutas e vegetais. É abundante na laranja, parte vindo da polpa da laranja, mas mais presente na casca. Na própria planta, a pectina ajuda a unir as células da planta, o que sustenta a forma da fruta.

Com o tempo, enzimas da planta digerem a pectina, como você percebe em uma fruta amadurecendo que está perdendo sua rigidez. O nível de pectina presente nas laranjas varia de 0,25 a 0,76 por cento. É uma ampla faixa dependente da variedade de laranja e do grau de maturação da fruta.[13] A pectina, como fonte de fibra, reduz o colesterol[14] e ajuda a controlar o açúcar no sangue.

A fruta da laranja amadurece enquanto o exterior da laranja ainda está verde. Através da prática do “desverdecimento”, a laranja usa o etileno (o hormônio do envelhecimento das plantas) para amadurecer as laranjas após a colheita, criando a cor laranja brilhante.[15] A desverdecimento precisa ocorrer sob condições cuidadosamente controladas, ou pode levar ao apodrecimento e outros problemas para a fruta.[16]  

Preparação do Óleo de Laranja

Os óleos essenciais da laranja são extraídos da casca laranja brilhante. Essa casca externa dos cítricos é chamada de “flavedo” e é coberta por pequenas glândulas. Cada glândula contém uma gota de óleo essencial. Para extrair o óleo orgânico, a casca deve ser fisicamente quebrada.[17] Os principais componentes do óleo de laranja são um pouco diferentes entre o óleo de laranja doce e o óleo de laranja amarga.  

Expressão Ou Prensagem a Frio

Expressão refere-se ao processo de quebrar lentamente a casca da laranja sob pressão mecânica para liberar os óleos das glândulas da casca. Este processo usa ecuelle a piquer, ou um aparelho projetado para extrair óleos das cascas das frutas.

Começou na França como uma tigela forrada com agulhas para perfurar a casca da fruta e um funil para coletar os óleos liberados. Foi modernizado para acomodar práticas comerciais, mas usa os mesmos princípios de perfurar e agitar a casca.[18]

Óleos de laranja amarga são obtidos por prensagem a frio.[19] Prensado a frio significa que o óleo foi extraído em baixa temperatura. A baixa temperatura preserva o óleo volátil, que fornece o aroma rico da planta. O melhor rendimento das cascas de laranja parece ocorrer quando a casca foi seca primeiro. O óleo coletado terá composição variável, dependendo da maturidade da planta e da variedade de laranja usada.[20]

Todas as variedades de laranja produzem óleos voláteis muito ricos no hidrocarboneto monoterpeno, limoneno. O sabor do óleo vem de seus hidrocarbonetos sesquiterpenos. Hesperidina e outros flavonoides são abundantes nas cascas, mas se degradam rapidamente durante o processamento.[21]

Extração por Destilação

A extração por destilação significa expor uma planta à água ou vapor para quebrar o material vegetal e liberar o óleo essencial. Os óleos são resfriados e condensados para coleta. A destilação é usada para extração de laranja, usando tanto o fruto inteiro quanto a casca.[22]

O óleo de casca de laranja destilado a vapor não conterá o resíduo ceroso que um óleo prensado a frio conteria. Isso os torna menos propensos a entupir difusores de óleo, manchar tecidos e, como são menos biologicamente ativos, prolonga a vida útil.[23] A destilação também permite a remoção das furocumarinas dos óleos de laranja.

Furocumarinas foram encontradas como fotocarcinogênicas, o que significa que quando esses compostos são expostos à luz, podem causar mutações nas células que levam ao câncer. Isso ajuda a explicar os produtos para a pele que permanecem na pele e podem ser perfumados com óleo de laranja. A toxicidade não é observada em produtos que são lavados,[24] mas há algumas evidências de que beber suco de laranja regularmente causa fotossensibilidade que pode levar ao câncer de pele.[25]


Usos Medicinais do Óleo de Laranja

Medicina Tradicional Chinesa e Usos do Óleo de Laranja

As cascas tanto de C. Aurantium quanto da tangerina mais doce (Citrus reticulate) são usadas na medicina chinesa. A laranja é considerada eficaz para desobstruir.[26] As cascas são usadas principalmente para melhorar a digestão, aliviando gases e inchaço. Quando sintomas de distúrbios digestivos, como diarreia ou constipação, ocorrem junto com sintomas respiratórios de muco e congestão no peito, as cascas de laranja amarga são usadas para tratar ambos simultaneamente.[27]  



Antimicrobiano Tópico

À medida que o problema dos organismos resistentes a antimicrobianos se espalha, o interesse em fontes vegetais de antifúngicos, antibióticos e agentes antivirais aumentou. O óleo de laranja amarga tem sido estudado por seu sucesso no tratamento de infecções microbianas, como pé de atleta e micose. O óleo de laranja demonstrou eficácia promissora contra fungos,[28] embora usado como óleo puro possa ser um pouco irritante para a pele.[29] O óleo de laranja Valencia prensado a frio e sem terpenos e um extrato de limoneno inibem o crescimento das espécies Campylobacter e Arcobacter de germes.[30]  



Aromaterapia

O óleo essencial fragrante da laranja tem mostrado reduzir a ansiedade antes de operações, em pacientes aguardando procedimentos dentários,[31] e em crianças realizando procedimentos dentários. Esses efeitos não foram baseados em auto-relatos, mas demonstrados em redução das taxas de pulso e níveis de cortisol salivar.[32]



Em um estudo que comparou auto-relatos de ansiedade e a pressão arterial sistólica em pacientes expostos ao óleo de neroli de C. Aurantium ou placebo durante uma colonoscopia, mostrou que a mudança fisiológica de redução da pressão arterial ocorreu mesmo quando a experiência de ansiedade estava presente.[33]  



Saúde Cardiovascular

A laranja rica em antioxidantes é útil para melhorar o fluxo pelos vasos sanguíneos. Danos endoteliais causados pela obesidade foram encontrados melhorados em adolescentes que receberam cápsulas de C. aurantium seco por apenas um mês. São necessários testes mais longos, mas isso apoia um corpo maior de pesquisas sobre os flavonoides e antioxidantes abundantes nas cascas de laranja e sua capacidade de reparar as paredes dos vasos sanguíneos.[34]  



Perda de Peso

O principal alcaloide nas laranjas amargas é a p-sinefrina e ela tem sido o centro de alguma controvérsia. Como um ingrediente comum em suplementos para perda de peso sem efedrina, existem recomendações contra sua segurança. A p-sinefrina é um agonista beta, o que significa que aumenta a quebra de gordura e a produção de energia.



Um agente semelhante, a meta-sinefrina, não ocorre naturalmente nas laranjas, mas às vezes é sintetizado e adicionado a suplementos para perda de peso. Enquanto a p-sinefrina não se liga aos receptores no corpo que aumentam a pressão arterial, a m-sinefrina sim.[35] As preocupações sobre a p-sinefrina não parecem estar bem fundamentadas, mas persistem.[36] A sinefrina da laranja amarga é uma substância proibida pela National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).[37]  



Usos tradicionais

O óleo de laranja tem sido usado para melhorar o “sangue cansado”, provavelmente anemia, assim como fadiga por infecções virais, impurezas da pele, queda de cabelo, hematomas, dor e congelamento. Tem sido usado para várias condições dos olhos, incluindo pálpebras inchadas e sangramento da retina. Provavelmente devido à sua ação antimicrobiana, tem sido usado para tratar úlceras de decúbito.[38]  


Perguntas sobre óleo de laranja

O que devo procurar em um óleo de laranja? Óleos essenciais de laranja prensados a frio geralmente são de cor clara, mas podem variar dependendo da época do ano e do tipo de laranja usada. Deve cheirar fortemente a laranja, embora o óleo de neroli de laranjas amargas possa ter um aroma diferente do esperado cítrico. Se o óleo foi destilado, será claro e pode ser mais fino que um óleo prensado, pois todas as ceras e resíduos terão sido removidos no processamento. Se for usado como agente tópico que permanecerá na pele, procure um óleo de laranja livre de psoralenos.   

Se eu sou alérgico a cítricos, posso usar óleo de laranja? Se você tem alergia a qualquer tipo de cítrico, ou se não tem certeza se tem alergia a cítricos, o óleo de laranja deve ser evitado, mesmo como agente tópico. A reação IgE que ocorre quando alguém tem alergia à laranja parece causar uma reação cruzada com pólen, então se você sabe que tem forte alergia a pólen, converse com seu médico antes de tentar o óleo de cítricos.[39]  

É seguro usar óleo de laranja em crianças? Não use óleo de laranja na pele de crianças se elas forem ficar expostas ao sol. Isso pode aumentar o risco de queimaduras solares e câncer de pele. A laranja, como membro da família dos cítricos, é um alérgeno comum, então observe atentamente sinais de reação alérgica. Nunca use óleo de laranja não diluído na pele e sempre observe irritação ao usar qualquer preparação com óleos essenciais na pele. Alergias podem se desenvolver com o tempo. Nunca dê óleo essencial internamente para uma criança. Uma gota de óleo essencial diluída em óleo carreador aplicada nos pés é suficiente para obter os benefícios para uma criança.  

Qual é a validade do óleo de laranja? Mantido sob condições adequadas de armazenamento, o óleo de laranja dura cerca de nove a 12 meses. Deve ser armazenado em um frasco escuro e em um local fresco e escuro, pois a luz e o calor o oxidam. Fique atento a turvação ou cheiro desagradável como sinais de que estragou.  

Posso usar na minha pele? O óleo de laranja sozinho é muito irritante para a pele. Mesmo quando usado como antifúngico tópico, deve ser diluído para representar apenas 25 por cento ou menos da solução. O óleo de laranja na pele exposta ao sol é fotosensibilizante, podendo aumentar o risco de queimadura solar, e fotocarcinogênico, potencialmente aumentando o risco de câncer de pele. Isso não ocorre com o uso de produtos que são enxaguados, como xampus ou sabonetes, pois eles não deixam os furocumarinas na pele. Use com cautela óleos de laranja em produtos usados na pele exposta ao sol, como loções.  

Cuidados e Considerações

Use com cautela o óleo de laranja ou qualquer óleo cítrico na pele. Eles são fotosensibilizantes e podem aumentar o risco de queimadura solar ou o risco de câncer de pele. Se você tem alto risco de câncer de pele, pode haver razão para ter cautela com o consumo de suco de laranja, pois os óleos presentes no suco e na polpa também podem ser fotosensibilizantes.

Embora o suco de laranja seja seguro para beber, nunca tome óleos essenciais internamente. O suco de laranja, assim como seu par cítrico grapefruit, pode afetar a forma como você metaboliza medicamentos. Se estiver usando medicação, pergunte ao seu médico qual é o nível seguro de consumo de suco de laranja para você.  

 Fui informado - e há informações de Robert Tisserand - que o óleo de laranja doce não é fototóxico. Precauções de segurança que devem ser tomadas para a laranja amarga não são necessárias para a laranja doce.
