Sobre Óleos Botânicos

O uso de óleos botânicos pode ser rastreado há milhares de anos, com raízes em culturas tão diversas quanto os antigos sumérios, chineses e o Império Romano.[1]

Óleos botânicos são preparados a partir da planta inteira, preservando seu aroma, os principais ingredientes ativos e a essência da planta. Óleos botânicos feitos de várias plantas foram usados ao longo da história para honrar deuses,[2] preparar corpos para funerais,[3] preservar a beleza, ajudar na higiene e tratar uma ampla variedade de condições médicas. Instruções para a preparação e uso de plantas como remédio estão catalogadas nas obras de Dioscórides, De materia medica[4], já no primeiro século.

A tecnologia moderna permitiu identificar e estudar as partes ativas das plantas para seu papel na saúde e sua utilidade contra várias condições médicas. O valor dos óleos botânicos resistiu ao teste do tempo.  

As Propriedades da Prímula

A prímula é uma flor silvestre que começou na América Central e México há cerca de 70.000 anos e viajou para o norte para crescer por todo os Estados Unidos, particularmente ao longo de margens de rios e em solo arenoso. É uma planta florida cujas flores amarelas só se abrem à noite, dando-lhe seu nome.[5]

Os colonizadores europeus trouxeram a raiz de volta para a Inglaterra e Alemanha, onde era consumida como alimento, e para a Itália, de onde se espalhou pela Europa. É mencionada pela primeira vez em referências botânicas em 1587, e durante o século 16século século foi apelidada de “cura para todos os males do rei” por sua utilidade em muitas doenças. Seu nome latino, Oenothera, significa “uma planta cujo suco pode causar sono”, capturando suas qualidades sedativas.[6] Os nativos americanos esfregavam prímula em seus mocassins para mascarar o cheiro e ajudar a se aproximar dos animais. Acreditava-se que trazia sorte na caça, possivelmente por essa razão.[7]  

Nutrientes

Toda a planta da prímula pode ser usada como alimento. A raiz com sabor de noz era consumida pelos nativos americanos[8] e os ingleses[9] e os alemães a chamavam de rampion[10] e a consideravam mais nutritiva que a carne bovina.[11] As folhas jovens podem ser comidas cruas em saladas.

As folhas ficam muito amargas, mas podem ser cozidas em várias trocas de água para torná-las mais palatáveis. As sementes comestíveis foram usadas para substituir sementes de papoula. É das sementes que se extrai o valioso óleo de prímula. O óleo da semente é a única parte da planta ainda consumida rotineiramente, e os ácidos graxos essenciais são os únicos nutrientes da planta que foram estudados.

As gorduras da prímula são ácidos graxos essenciais. Nutrientes essenciais são aqueles que o corpo não pode produzir - eles precisam vir da dieta. O ácido linoleico, o ácido graxo dominante no óleo de prímula, também é abundante em vegetais folhosos verdes, sementes e nozes.[12]

Embora os ácidos graxos ômega-3 sejam mais conhecidos por seus benefícios à saúde, a dieta e a saúde da pele e do cabelo requerem um equilíbrio entre os ácidos graxos ômega-6 e ômega-3. A dieta americana tende a conter uma grande quantidade de ômega-6, que pode se converter em ácido araquidônico inflamatório, especialmente quando a fonte é carne. Fontes vegetais de ácidos graxos ômega-6 se convertem em ácido gama-linolênico, que é anti-inflamatório, antes de se tornar ácido araquidônico.[13]

Embora o óleo de prímula tenha principalmente ácido linoleico, ele também contém até 10% de ácido gama-linolênico (GLA).[14] O GLA no corpo se converte em dihomo-GLA (DGLA), que é anti-inflamatório, antes de se tornar ácido araquidônico. A conversão requer magnésio, zinco e vitaminas C, B3 e B6 adequados.[15] O GLA é abundante no leite materno humano, onde parece ajudar a controlar o nível de IgE, uma imunoglobulina associada a alergias.[16] Além do leite materno, o GLA é escasso na alimentação, vindo apenas das sementes de groselha preta, borragem e da spirulina.[17]

O óleo de prímula também contém ácido oleico, palmítico e esteárico. Essas gorduras contribuem para a natureza emoliente do óleo de prímula, o que o torna útil em cosméticos, mas essas gorduras são abundantes em muitas plantas. Da mesma forma, o EPO é uma fonte de esteróis vegetais, que ajudam a reduzir o colesterol, mas estão amplamente disponíveis em outros alimentos vegetais. A prímula é valorizada principalmente pelo seu alto teor de GLA.[18]  

Preparação do Óleo de Prímula

Prensagem a Frio

Prensagem por Expulsor refere-se ao processo de quebra lenta das sementes de prímula sob pressão mecânica, como duas placas metálicas giratórias, para liberar as gorduras. Prensagem a frio significa que o óleo foi prensado por expulsor em baixa temperatura.

A baixa temperatura evita que o óleo estrague[19] e ajuda a manter as propriedades benéficas da planta, incluindo os esteróis vegetais.[20] A volatilidade dos compostos valiosos extraídos torna o processo muito delicado, que deve ser realizado em uma faixa estreita de temperatura.[21]

Extração por Solvente

A quantidade de óleo coletada da semente de prímula é relativamente baixa, mas muito valiosa. A quantidade de óleo coletada é muito aumentada pelo uso de um solvente como o hexano durante o processo de extração. O hexano é então removido sob pressão e baixas temperaturas.

Na tentativa de eliminar completamente o risco de exposição a solventes, diferentes empresas exploraram métodos alternativos. Um deles é a extração por fluido supercrítico usando dióxido de carbono. Isso envolve realizar a extração do óleo sob condições cuidadosamente monitoradas de temperatura e pressão, usando dióxido de carbono para extrair a máxima quantidade de óleo.[22]

Usos Medicinais do Óleo de Prímula

Usos na Medicina Ayurvédica e Chinesa

O óleo de prímula é considerado refrescante e nutritivo na medicina ayurvédica, o sistema tradicional de medicina da Índia, tornando-o útil para condições inflamatórias. É usado em eczema, alergias, doenças autoimunes e deficiências imunológicas.[23]

Tanto a medicina ayurvédica quanto a medicina tradicional chinesa reconhecem o valor do óleo de prímula para o controle dos ciclos reprodutivos femininos, e na medicina chinesa, é usado para movimentar o sangue e melhorar a circulação.[24]  

Saúde da Mulher

O óleo de prímula é mais procurado como auxílio para a saúde da mulher, incluindo cistos mamários e dor (também chamada de mastalgia).[25] Também é útil para TPM[26], pressão alta na gravidez, facilitando o parto[27] e no controle de ondas de calor na menopausa[28]. Há necessidade de ensaios maiores[29] para confirmar seu benefício no tratamento, mas a ação anti-inflamatória da prímula apoia seus usos tradicionais para essas condições.[30]

Eczema

Desde a década de 1930, pesquisadores acreditam que uma deficiência de ácidos graxos essenciais (AGE) ou uma anormalidade no metabolismo dos AGE está na raiz do eczema. Pessoas com eczema têm muito ácido linoleico, mas podem ter dificuldade em convertê-lo em GLA anti-inflamatório. Se isso for verdade, deve ser útil suplementar com óleo de prímula rico em GLA.[31]

Os estudos não mostraram benefício consistente, mas pode ser uma questão de encontrar a dose certa para usar.[32] Pode ser útil para controlar os efeitos colaterais do isotretinoína, um medicamento para acne.[33] Mais estudos são necessários para determinar a eficácia.

Saúde Cardiovascular

O óleo de prímula tem ajudado na dor e perda da função nervosa associadas à neuropatia diabética. Os resultados exigiram o uso de uma dose alta de óleo por seis meses e funcionaram melhor em pessoas com açúcar no sangue bem regulado.[34]

A prímula também pode ser útil para controlar o açúcar no sangue em mulheres com diabetes gestacional. Mais estudos são necessários.[35] Como auxilia a circulação, há interesse em sua capacidade de melhorar os sintomas da doença de Raynaud, mas, novamente, mais estudos são necessários.  

Artrite

Ácidos graxos essenciais têm sido estudados por sua capacidade de aliviar a dor da artrite. As gorduras no óleo de prímula aumentam diretamente a quantidade de DGLA no sangue. DGLA é uma gordura fortemente anti-inflamatória que deve ajudar a reduzir a dor e proteger as articulações.

Alguns estudos são promissores, mas mais evidências são necessárias antes que a prímula possa ser recomendada como tratamento de primeira linha para artrite reumatoide.[36]  

Cosméticos

O óleo de prímula é usado em produtos cosméticos como sabonetes e loções. Ele é bem absorvido pela pele e a amacia ao infundir seus óleos benéficos. Tópicamente, é frequentemente usado em conjunto com um óleo carreador que melhora a estabilidade da prímula.[37]  

Usos Tradicionais

Os nativos americanos usavam as folhas da prímula para fazer emplastros para curar contusões e hemorróidas. Era considerada um remédio para reumatismo, paralisia e gota. A planta inteira, preparada como chá ou tintura, era usada como sedativo para insônia, inquietação e para acalmar os pulmões em congestões como bronquite.[38]

Seu uso para inquietação provavelmente levou à sugestão moderna de que é útil para TDAH, mas ainda não há pesquisas suficientes que comprovem esse efeito. Também tem sido usado para ajudar o corpo a se recuperar dos efeitos do consumo excessivo de álcool.[39]  

 

Perguntas Sobre Óleo de Prímula

O que devo procurar em um óleo de prímula? A maior parte do óleo de prímula é vendida em cápsulas. O GLA é bastante instável e fica rançoso rapidamente, então procure produtos que tenham um antioxidante, como a vitamina E, adicionada. Use fabricantes confiáveis. Há muitos casos de óleo de prímula sendo substituído em cápsulas por óleos mais baratos, como soja ou cártamo.[40]  

Posso ter alergia ao óleo de prímula? Alergias à prímula são raramente relatadas, mas possíveis. Se você sabe que tem alergia às flores de prímula ou ao GLA, não use prímula topicamente ou internamente. Pergunte ao seu médico sobre testes para alergia à prímula ou a outras plantas da família onagraceae.  

É seguro usar óleo de prímula em crianças? O óleo de prímula foi estudado e considerado seguro para crianças. Não é um alérgeno comum, mas se seu filho tiver alergia à prímula ou a outras plantas da família onagraceae, não use óleo de prímula topicamente ou internamente como suplemento nutricional.

Posso cozinhar com óleo de prímula? Você não deve usar óleo de prímula para cozinhar. Ele é extremamente instável sob qualquer calor, mas a planta é comestível e nutritiva. Folhas jovens podem ser adicionadas à salada, e as raízes podem ser consumidas. Um óleo carreador, como o azeite, pode ser infundido com flores de prímula para capturar algumas das propriedades da planta. O óleo resultante pode ser usado da mesma forma que o azeite.[41]  

Qual é a validade do óleo de prímula? Muito curta! Mantido sob condições adequadas de armazenamento, o óleo de prímula dura cerca de seis meses. A vitamina E é adicionada ao óleo de prímula para protegê-lo do estresse oxidativo que ocorre quando o óleo começa a ficar rançoso, prolongando sua validade. Os óleos de prímula precisam ser refrigerados e, ao usá-los em preparações, devem ser adicionados após qualquer etapa que envolva calor.  

O óleo de prímula não vai entupir meus poros? O óleo de prímula é um bom emoliente, o que significa que é eficaz em quebrar e amaciar a pele. Mesmo assim, os poros do rosto podem ser mais sensíveis ao entupimento por óleos espessos. Se você tende a ter pele oleosa, o óleo de prímula pode ser melhor usado em outras partes do corpo.  

Cuidados e Considerações

Há algumas evidências de que a prímula pode aumentar a atividade convulsiva. Não use prímula, óleo de prímula ou óleo essencial de prímula se você tiver epilepsia ou for propenso a convulsões de qualquer tipo.

A onagra pode aumentar o sangramento, portanto não use se você tiver um distúrbio de sangramento ou coagulação, estiver usando medicamentos anticoagulantes ou estiver passando por cirurgia. O óleo de onagra pode causar algum desconforto estomacal, náusea, diarreia, fezes soltas ou dores de cabeça.
