In a time of busy lifestyles and rushing from one place to another fast food has become more popular among families. Due to its quick grab-and-go accessibility and the affordability compared to other options for eating out it has become a regular part of many lives.
While there is a lot of talk about if fast food is healthy or not there is not as much discussion on how it affects the teeth. The ingredients used in these foods that make them fast to cook and serve can increase the risk of tooth decay and cavities.
They also increase other risks such as diabetes which can cause more risk of gum disease.
Fast Food And Tooth Decay
Fast foods often have increased salt and sugar - ingredients known to stick to the teeth more. Correct brushing and flossing can help to mitigate the build-up but since fast food is generally consumed for convenience, it is not always possible to brush directly after eating.
A fast food meal is also often accompanied by soda pop, and that particular drink choice has a high sugar content and speeds the breakdown of enamel while speeding up tooth decay.
Fast Food And Diabetes
Studies have shown that fast food options can increase risk factors for diabetes in people of all ages, and those with diabetes are more likely to have dental concerns and gum disease. By consuming these types of foods regularly the risk of developing either or both of these increases.
Fast Food Risk Factors
While fast food is a quick, convenient, and affordable option for many people it does have some risks to both health and tooth health when consumed often. In moderation it can be useful when in a hurry, and health can be maintained with a moderate consumption of these foods.
When they become a regular part of your diet or are consumed multiple times a week they will not only increase the likelihood of tooth decay and cavities but also increase the risk of diabetes which carries a higher risk of gum disease.

The main concern with these foods is the added sugar and salt, which can
cause a build-up of food particles along the teeth and gums. As this build-up occurs it holds the damaging ingredients in contact with the teeth and increases the damage they can cause.
