Gingivitis can cause not only pain in the gums and teeth, but can also lead to cavities, infections, and even loss of teeth. There are a few items to address in order to treat gingivitis and encourage the mouth and gums to remain healthy.

The most common causes are poor oral hygiene that allows plaque and tartar to buildup on the teeth, tobacco, dry mouth, improper nutrition and deficiencies in necessary nutrients, as well as some medications, hormones, aging, and infections within the gums.

Proper oral hygiene to fight gingivitis

Proper oral hygiene is necessary to maintain the health of not only the teeth and gums, but also the entire body. Teeth must be flossed at least once each day, and brushed with an appropriate toothbrush and  toothpaste twice daily.

To increase the care of the teeth, the mouth can be rinsed with water and teeth brushed after each meal. Keeping the teeth and gums free of food particles and residue buildup helps maintain the health of gums and prevent gingivitis. The buildup of food along the gums and between teeth is a leading cause of gingivitis as well as cavities and other dental concerns.

Remove tartar to fight gingivitis

As residue is allowed to build up on the teeth it becomes a film of bacteria that coats the teeth. This can harden and become plaque as it remains on the teeth. Removing this buildup daily will decrease the occurrence of tartar.

The tartar that occurs will irritate the gums and lead to gingivitis, requiring removal via dental cleaning. The gums become irritated around the teeth, in the area known as gingiva, causing swelling and inflammation. This encourages tooth decay as the gums are unable to protect the teeth and tartar holds plaque and bacteria against the teeth increasing cavity occurrences.

Other causes of gingivitis

Incorrectly fit dental appliances as well as improper cleaning will allow buildup to occur around the teeth, and can increase the likelihood of gingivitis. Aging and frequent dry mouth will also cause gingivitis through the deteriorating health of the gums and the lack of saliva within the mouth.

As saliva is the main factor in keeping the bacteria and small food particles from remaining in contact with the teeth and creating a buildup, the lack of saliva that occurs during hormonal changes, some medications, and during natural aging can all contribute to gingivitis.

To avoid gingivitis it is important to treat any necessary medical conditions, including maintaining hormonal balance and proper nutrition. By ensuring hydration is maintained and the health is in balance gingivitis can be deterred.

As gingivitis may occur simply with the passing of time as the body changes with age, it may become necessary to treat it after it occurs rather than to use only preventative measures. However, many of the causes of gingivitis can be addressed easily over the counter with dental regular dental care products and proper oral hygiene.
