September Is Healthy Aging Month

Trusted Health Products

60 is the new 40, because people are no longer letting a calendar year dictate how they feel or what they do. Keeping yourself fit and active does not have to be harder as you get older, just different. Celebrate Healthy Aging Month in September with a new dedication to a better diet, safe exercise, and the power of positivity.

The Recipe for Healthy Aging

Healthy Aging Month can be your kickoff to starting a new food and exercise routine! Start going to your local farmer’s markets and cooperatives and adopt an organic whole foods diet. Stay away from processed foods, and instead fill up with:

  • Fiber
  • Antioxidants
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Phytonutrients (plant protein)
  • Omega fatty acids

Change Your Diet

Your diet, or way of eating, is important throughout your entire development, and changes with your body. When you are a child, you need more protein and calcium to build strong muscles and bones, but as an adult, you may need to alter your diet to focus on bone loss instead of bone building.

Research shows that eating prunes can not only slow down bone loss, which is very important for women but may even reverse it and help increase bone density. Other phytonutrients that can enhance your diet include:

  • Grapeseed
  • Citrus fruits
  • Olives/olive oil
  • Tomatoes

Magnesium is also important for bone health, as it can help with symptoms of diabetes and help your body convert food into energy. Here are a few delicious sources of magnesium:

  • Avocado
  • Bananas
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Shrimp

B vitamins can help to give you healthier younger-looking skin and gorgeous hair. Eggs, dairy, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds are all very good and healthy sources of B vitamins.

Elevate with Exercise

Not only can exercise help you stay strong and maintain a healthy weight, but it can also help elevate your mood. You can use exercise as your alone time for peace and quiet and to help you get centered, or you can get together with a group and make it a social event.

To avoid any damage to bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, you may want to choose a low-impact aerobic routine. You can still get a good cardio workout with exercises such as:

  • Walking
  • Swimming
  • Water aerobics
  • Biking

For great low-impact exercises that can help with strengthening, try:

  • Yoga
  • Elliptical machine
  • Cross country skiing
  • Biking

Try some new activities during Healthy Aging Month and see what works for you.

Alternative Exercise

Getting your exercise just means being physically active. Everyday tasks like yard work and gardening are a great way to work all your muscle groups and get a cardio workout. Put on some of your favorite music and power-clean the house. Got grandkids? Take them to the park and chase them around for a while! You will definitely get a workout, and you will all enjoy a good nap when you get home.

The Potentiality of Positivity

You always have the potential to make your life, and the lives of those around you, a more positive experience. As we age, particularly post-retirement, it can be easy to allow ourselves to fall into a funk that gets increasingly detrimental. Turn that frown upside down and put on a happy face with the following tips.

Put Age in Perspective

Age is only a number; do not let it define you. Never let anyone tell you to “act your age.”

Embrace Experience

The material things are nice, but if you haven’t already, it’s time to live a little. Try new things, go to new places, meet new people. Plan an exciting excursion for Healthy Aging Month.

Watch Your Mouth

No more negative statements, especially about yourself. Saying nice things to yourself and others can be a great morale booster. Just smiling can boost your endorphin levels, make you feel happier, and reduce stress.

Laugh It Up

Take that smile even further and share the joy of laughter. A good, prolonged belly laugh can be a full body workout. You’ll also enjoy health benefits such as:

  • Boosted immune system
  • Improved memory
  • Regulated blood pressure

A Happy, Healthier You

A Happier, Healthier You

Enjoy Healthy Aging Month with friends and family by sitting down to a healthy meal of whole foods after a day in the park, and share some laughter.
