Acerca de los Aceites Botánicos

El uso de aceites botánicos se remonta a miles de años, con raíces en culturas tan diversas como los antiguos sumerios, chinos y el Imperio Romano.[1]  Los aceites botánicos se preparan a partir de la planta entera, preservando su aroma, los principales ingredientes activos y la esencia de la planta. Los aceites botánicos hechos de diversas plantas se han usado a lo largo de la historia para honrar a los dioses,[2] preparar cuerpos para funerales,[3] preservar la belleza, ayudar con la higiene y tratar una amplia variedad de condiciones médicas.

Las instrucciones para la preparación y uso de plantas como medicina están catalogadas en las obras de Dioscórides, De materia medica[4], ya en el primer siglo. La tecnología moderna ha permitido identificar y estudiar las partes activas de las plantas por su papel en la salud y su utilidad contra diversas condiciones médicas. El valor de los aceites botánicos ha resistido la prueba del tiempo.  

Las Propiedades de las Naranjas

Se cree que la naranja es originaria de áreas tropicales de Asia, desde donde se extendió a la India, la costa este de África y el Mediterráneo oriental. El desarrollo de las rutas comerciales árabes y la expansión del Islam llevaron la naranja alrededor del mundo. Aunque la naranja es una fruta tropical, los árboles crecen mejor donde hay una ligera helada en invierno.[5] El nombre original de la naranja proviene de la palabra sánscrita “naranga,” que a su vez viene de la palabra tamil “naru” que significa fragante.[6]  

Tipos de Naranjas

Los naranjos son el árbol frutal más comúnmente cultivado en el mundo, y existen varias variedades o cultivares de la naranja, cuyo nombre latino es Citrus sinensis. Se cultivan diferentes cultivares según qué tan bien prosperen en diferentes épocas del año y en distintas condiciones del suelo. En EE. UU., California produce principalmente los cultivares “Washington Navel” y “Valencia” y Florida produce los “Hamlin,” “Pineapple” y “Valencia.”[7]

Las variedades populares mencionadas arriba son naranjas dulces valoradas por su jugo. En todo el mundo, se consumen frutas amargas para estimular la digestión. Hay varias variedades de naranja agria, incluyendo Citrus Aurantium cultivada en Vietnam, que se usa en licores como Triple Sec, Grand Marnier y Curacao. El Daidai, variedad de C. Aurantium, se usa terapéuticamente en la medicina china y japonesa y se intercambia en el Año Nuevo japonés para traer longevidad.[8]

La naranja amarga de Sevilla se usa en mermeladas debido a su alto contenido de pectina, y la naranja chinotto es un saborizante en licores como el Campari. El aceite de naranja se extrae de las cáscaras de varias variedades, incluyendo la dulce naranja Valencia, Citrus aurantium, y la variedad amarga Bergamota, cuyo aceite es un sabor conocido en el té Earl Grey.[9]

Nutrientes

La naranja es una fruta famosa por su color naranja brillante y su riqueza en vitamina C, y de hecho cada taza de rodajas de naranja proporciona casi 100 mg de vitamina C. Sus nutrientes menos conocidos incluyen potasio, fósforo, magnesio, folato y vitamina A.[10]

La naranja también contiene una variedad de ácidos grasos, principalmente ácidos grasos insaturados, incluyendo linoleico, palmítico, linolénico y vacénico.[11] El principal alcaloide en las naranjas amargas es la para-sinefrina.[12] La pectina es una fibra soluble en agua que se encuentra en frutas y verduras. Es abundante en la naranja, parte proviene de la pulpa de la naranja, pero está más presente en la cáscara. En la planta misma, la pectina ayuda a unir las células vegetales, lo que sostiene la forma de la fruta.

Con el tiempo, las enzimas de la planta digerirán la pectina, como se nota en una fruta que madura y pierde su rigidez. El nivel de pectina presente en las naranjas varía entre 0.25 y 0.76 por ciento. Es un rango amplio que depende de la variedad de naranja y la madurez de la fruta.[13] La pectina, como fuente de fibra, reduce el colesterol[14] y ayuda a controlar el azúcar en la sangre.  

¿Sabías que? naranjas

La fruta de la naranja madura mientras el exterior de la naranja aún está verde. A través de la práctica del “desverdizado”, la naranja utiliza etileno (la hormona de envejecimiento de las plantas) para madurar las naranjas después de la cosecha, creando el color naranja brillante.[15] El desverdizado debe realizarse bajo condiciones cuidadosamente controladas, o puede provocar pudrición y otros problemas para la fruta.[16]  

Preparación del aceite de naranja

Los aceites esenciales de la naranja se extraen de la cáscara naranja brillante. Esta cáscara externa de los cítricos se llama “flavedo” y está cubierta con pequeñas glándulas. Cada glándula contiene una gota de aceite esencial. Para extraer el aceite orgánico, la cáscara debe romperse físicamente.[17] Los componentes principales del aceite de naranja son algo diferentes entre el aceite de naranja dulce y el de naranja amarga.  

Expresión o prensado en frío

La expresión se refiere al proceso de descomponer lentamente la cáscara de naranja bajo presión mecánica para liberar los aceites de las glándulas de la cáscara. Este proceso utiliza ecuelle a piquer, o un aparato diseñado para extraer aceites de las cáscaras de frutas.

Comenzó en Francia como un cuenco forrado con agujas para pinchar la cáscara de la fruta y un embudo para recoger los aceites liberados. Se ha modernizado para adaptarse a las prácticas comerciales, pero utiliza los mismos principios de pinchar y agitar la cáscara.[18]

Los aceites de naranja amarga se obtienen mediante prensado en frío.[19] Prensado en frío significa que el aceite fue extraído a baja temperatura. La baja temperatura preserva el aceite volátil, que proporciona el aroma rico de la planta. El mejor rendimiento de las cáscaras de naranja parece obtenerse cuando la cáscara ha sido secada primero. El aceite que se recolecta variará en composición, dependiendo de qué tan madura estaba la planta y qué variedad de naranja se usó.[20]

Todas las variedades de naranja producen aceites volátiles muy ricos en el hidrocarburo monoterpeno, limoneno. El sabor del aceite proviene de sus hidrocarburos sesquiterpénicos. La hesperidina y otros flavonoides son abundantes en las cáscaras, pero se descomponen rápidamente durante el procesamiento.[21]

Extracción por destilación

La extracción por destilación consiste en exponer una planta al agua o al vapor para descomponer el material vegetal y liberar el aceite esencial. Los aceites se enfrían y condensan para su recolección. La destilación se usa para la extracción de naranja, utilizando ya sea la fruta entera o la cáscara.[22]

El aceite de cáscara de naranja destilado al vapor no contendrá el residuo ceroso que contendría un aceite prensado en frío. Esto los hace menos propensos a obstruir difusores de aceite, manchar telas y, al ser menos biológicamente activos, extienden la vida útil.[23] La destilación también permite eliminar los furocumarinas de los aceites de naranja.

Se ha encontrado que los furocumarinas son fotocarcinogénicos, lo que significa que cuando estos compuestos se exponen a la luz, pueden causar mutaciones en las células que conducen al cáncer. Esto es relevante para productos para la piel que se dejan puestos y que podrían estar perfumados con aceite de naranja. La toxicidad no se observa en productos que se enjuagan,[24] pero hay alguna evidencia de que beber jugo de naranja regularmente causa fotosensibilidad que puede conducir al cáncer de piel.[25]

Medicina Tradicional China y Usos del Aceite de Naranja

Las cáscaras tanto de C. Aurantium como de la mandarina más dulce (Citrus reticulate) se utilizan en la medicina china. La naranja se considera eficaz para despejar obstrucciones.[26] Las cáscaras se usan principalmente para mejorar la digestión, aliviando gases e hinchazón. Cuando los síntomas de trastornos digestivos, como diarrea o estreñimiento, ocurren junto con síntomas respiratorios de flema y congestión en el pecho, se usan cáscaras de naranja amarga para tratarlos juntos.[27]  



Antimicrobiano tópico

A medida que se extiende el problema de los organismos resistentes a los antimicrobianos, ha aumentado el interés en fuentes vegetales de antifúngicos, antibióticos y agentes antivirales. El aceite de naranja amarga ha sido estudiado por su éxito en el tratamiento de infecciones microbianas, como el pie de atleta y la tiña. El aceite de naranja ha demostrado una eficacia prometedora contra los hongos,[28] aunque usado como aceite puro puede ser algo irritante para la piel.[29] El aceite de naranja Valencia prensado en frío y sin terpenos y un extracto de limoneno inhiben ambos el crecimiento de especies de Campylobacter y Arcobacter de gérmenes.[30]  



Aromaterapia

Se ha demostrado que el fragante aceite esencial de naranja reduce la ansiedad antes de las operaciones, en pacientes que esperan procedimientos dentales,[31] y en niños que se sometían a tratamientos dentales. Estos efectos no se basaron en auto informes, sino que se demostraron en la reducción de la frecuencia del pulso y los niveles de cortisol salival.[32]



En un estudio que comparó los auto informes de ansiedad y la presión arterial sistólica en pacientes expuestos al aceite de neroli de C. Aurantium o placebo durante una colonoscopía, se mostró que el cambio fisiológico de la reducción de la presión arterial ocurrió incluso cuando la experiencia de ansiedad estaba presente.[33]  



Salud cardiovascular

La naranja, rica en antioxidantes, es útil para mejorar el flujo a través de los vasos sanguíneos. Se encontró que el daño endotelial causado por la obesidad mejoró en adolescentes que recibieron cápsulas de C. aurantium seco durante solo un mes. Se necesitan ensayos más largos, pero esto respalda un cuerpo más amplio de investigación sobre los flavonoides y antioxidantes abundantes en las cáscaras de naranja y su capacidad para reparar las paredes de los vasos sanguíneos.[34]  



Pérdida de peso

El principal alcaloide en las naranjas amargas es la p-sinefrina y ha sido el centro de cierta controversia. Como ingrediente común en suplementos para la pérdida de peso sin efedrina, existen recomendaciones en contra de su seguridad. La p-sinefrina es un agonista beta, lo que significa que aumenta la descomposición de la grasa y la producción de energía.



Un agente similar, la meta-sinefrina, no ocurre naturalmente en las naranjas, pero a veces se sintetiza y se añade a suplementos para la pérdida de peso. Mientras que la p-sinefrina no se une a los receptores en el cuerpo que elevan la presión arterial, la m-sinefrina sí lo hace.[35] Las preocupaciones sobre la p-sinefrina no parecen estar bien fundamentadas, pero persisten.[36] La sinefrina de la naranja amarga es una sustancia prohibida por la National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).[37]  



Usos tradicionales

El aceite de naranja se ha usado para mejorar la “sangre cansada”, probablemente anemia, así como la fatiga por infecciones virales, impurezas de la piel, pérdida de cabello, moretones, dolor y congelación. Se ha usado para varias condiciones del ojo, incluyendo párpados hinchados y sangrado de la retina. Probablemente debido a su acción antimicrobiana, se ha usado para tratar úlceras por presión.[38]  


Preguntas sobre el aceite de naranja

¿Qué debo buscar en un aceite de naranja? Los aceites esenciales de naranja prensados en frío son generalmente de color pálido, pero pueden variar según la época del año y el tipo de naranja utilizada. Debe oler fuertemente a naranja, aunque el aceite de neroli de naranjas amargas puede oler diferente al aroma cítrico esperado. Si el aceite ha sido destilado, será claro y puede ser más delgado que un aceite prensado, ya que todas las ceras y residuos se habrán eliminado en el procesamiento. Si lo usa como agente tópico que permanecerá en la piel, busque un aceite de naranja libre de psoralenos.   

Si soy alérgico a los cítricos, ¿puedo usar aceite de naranja? Si tiene alergia a cualquier tipo de cítrico, o si no está seguro de tener alergia a los cítricos, debe evitar el aceite de naranja, incluso como agente tópico. La reacción IgE que ocurre cuando alguien tiene alergia a la naranja parece causar una reacción cruzada con el polen, así que si sabe que tiene una fuerte alergia al polen, hable con su médico antes de probar el aceite de cítricos.[39]  

¿Es seguro usar aceite de naranja en niños? No use aceite de naranja en la piel de los niños si van a estar al sol. Puede aumentar su riesgo de quemaduras solares y cáncer de piel. La naranja, como miembro de la familia de los cítricos, es un alérgeno común, así que observe de cerca signos de reacción alérgica. Nunca use aceite de naranja sin diluir en la piel y siempre vigile la irritación al usar cualquier preparación con aceites esenciales en la piel. Las alergias pueden desarrollarse con el tiempo. Nunca administre aceites esenciales internamente a un niño. Una gota de aceite esencial diluida en un aceite portador aplicada en los pies es suficiente para obtener los beneficios para un niño.  

¿Cuál es la vida útil del aceite de naranja? Guardado bajo condiciones de almacenamiento adecuadas, el aceite de naranja solo dura entre nueve y 12 meses. Debe almacenarse en una botella oscura y en un lugar fresco y oscuro, ya que la luz y el calor lo oxidan. Observe si se enturbia o si tiene un olor desagradable como señales de que se ha estropeado.  

¿Puedo usarlo en mi piel? El aceite de naranja solo es muy irritante para la piel. Incluso cuando se usa como antifúngico tópico, debe diluirse para representar solo el 25 por ciento o menos de la solución. El aceite de naranja en la piel expuesta al sol es fotosensibilizante, posiblemente aumentando su riesgo de quemadura solar, y fotocarcinogénico, potencialmente aumentando el riesgo de cáncer de piel. Esto no ocurrirá con el uso de productos que se enjuagan, como champús o jabones, ya que estos no dejan los furocumarinas en la piel. Use precaución con los aceites de naranja en productos usados en piel expuesta al sol, como lociones.  

Precauciones y consideraciones

Tenga precaución con el aceite de naranja o cualquier aceite cítrico en la piel. Son fotosensibilizantes y pueden aumentar el riesgo de quemaduras solares o el riesgo de cáncer de piel. Si tiene un alto riesgo de cáncer de piel, puede haber razones para ser cauteloso con el consumo de jugo de naranja, ya que los aceites presentes en el jugo y la pulpa también pueden ser fotosensibilizantes.

Aunque el jugo de naranja es seguro para beber, nunca tome aceites esenciales internamente. El jugo de naranja, al igual que su pariente cítrico el pomelo, puede afectar la forma en que metaboliza los medicamentos. Si está usando medicación, pregúntele a su médico cuál es un nivel seguro de consumo de jugo de naranja para usted.  

 Me han enseñado - y hay información de Robert Tisserand - que el aceite de naranja dulce no es fototóxico. Las precauciones de seguridad que se deben tomar con la naranja amarga no son necesarias con la naranja dulce.
