Acerca de los aceites botánicos

El uso de aceites botánicos se remonta a miles de años, con raíces en culturas tan diversas como los antiguos sumerios, chinos y el Imperio Romano.[1] Los aceites botánicos se preparan a partir de la planta entera, preservando su aroma, los principales ingredientes activos y la esencia de la planta. Los aceites botánicos hechos de diversas plantas se han usado a lo largo de la historia para honrar a los dioses,[2] preparar cuerpos para funerales,[3] preservar la belleza, ayudar con la higiene y tratar una amplia variedad de condiciones médicas. Las instrucciones para la preparación y uso de plantas como medicina están catalogadas en las obras de Dioscórides, De materia medica[4], ya en el primer siglo. La tecnología moderna ha permitido identificar y estudiar las partes activas de las plantas por su papel en la salud y su utilidad contra diversas condiciones médicas. El valor de los aceites botánicos ha resistido la prueba del tiempo.  

Las propiedades del limón

Desde India hasta Italia, la importancia de los cítricos toca todos los continentes y cruza desde la mesa de la cocina hasta el botiquín. Los árboles de cítricos más antiguos crecieron en Asia y el limón moderno fue creado en realidad por una serie de hibridaciones entre cidra y naranja agria[5], posiblemente en India.[6] Para el siglo 1º siglo d.C., los limones habían llegado a Italia y aparecían en mosaicos romanos del norte de África. Su cultivo fue descrito en el tratado árabe sobre agricultura de Qustus al-Rumi en el siglo 10º siglo, y los cantoneses registraron los usos del limón en el siglo 12º siglo. El médico personal del líder musulmán Saladino escribió un tratado sobre el limón a finales del siglo 12º siglo. A pesar del apodo “limeys” por el que llegaron a ser conocidos, la marina británica usaba limones dulces, no limas, para combatir el escorbuto en el mar en el siglo 18º siglo.[7] Cristóbal Colón trajo las primeras semillas de limón a La Española en 1493, y exploradores españoles las llevaron a St. Augustine, Florida. Hoy en día, la mayor parte del suministro mundial de limones se cultiva en Italia y California.[8]  

Tipos de limones

El limón nació como un híbrido y continúa evolucionando. El limón que es más probable que compres en una tienda de comestibles es el limón Meyer, que es apreciado por su versatilidad en la cocina.[9] Hay aproximadamente 17 variedades reconocidas de limón, cuyo nombre latino es Citrus Limon. Aunque gran parte de la literatura sobre los usos de los limones no especifica la especie utilizada, hay un interés creciente en establecer la pureza y el origen de ciertas especies de limón,[10] qué condiciones optimizan el valioso aceite obtenido en el proceso de extracción[11] y cuáles son más potentes medicinalmente.[12] 


Nutrientes

La extrema acidez del limón se consume en pequeñas dosis, pero esa pequeña dosis viene cargada de nutrientes. Bajo en calorías, el limón es el doble de rico en vitamina C que las naranjas y contiene una cantidad muy alta de potasio. Los limones también contienen bioflavonoides y antioxidantes como beta-criptoxantina, luteína y zeaxantina. También están presentes las vitaminas A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, folato y calcio.[13]

La cáscara del limón también es nutricionalmente valiosa. Solo 1 cucharada de cáscara contiene 9.6 mg de potasio, 8 mg de calcio, 7.7 mg de vitamina C y 0.6 g de fibra. La cáscara también contiene magnesio, fósforo, esteroles vegetales y ácidos grasos esenciales. Se valora principalmente por sus flavonoides, que tienen fuertes propiedades antioxidantes.  

Preparación del aceite de limón

Los aceites esenciales del limón se extraen de la cáscara amarilla brillante. Esta cáscara externa se llama “flavedo” y está cubierta con pequeñas glándulas. Cada glándula contiene una gota de aceite esencial. Para extraer el aceite orgánico, las glándulas de la cáscara deben romperse físicamente.[14] Los principales aceites volátiles en las cáscaras de limón son limoneno, alfa-terpineno, alfa-pineno[15], y los principales polifenoles en las cáscaras de limón son eriocitrina, hesperidina, narirutina y diosmina.  

Expresión o prensado en frío

La expresión se refiere al proceso de descomponer lentamente la cáscara de limón bajo presión mecánica para liberar los aceites de las glándulas de la cáscara. Este proceso utiliza Ecuelle a piquer, o un aparato diseñado para extraer aceites de las cáscaras de frutas. Comenzó en Francia como un cuenco forrado con agujas para pinchar la cáscara de la fruta y un embudo para recolectar los aceites liberados. Se ha modernizado para adaptarse a prácticas comerciales, pero utiliza los mismos principios de pinchar y agitar la cáscara.[16]

Prensado en frío significa que el aceite se extrajo a baja temperatura. La baja temperatura preserva el aceite volátil, que proporciona el aroma intenso de la planta. El aceite producido variará en color desde un verde esmeralda profundo hasta amarillo, dependiendo de la madurez de la planta y de la variedad de limón utilizada. Si el aceite es claro, probablemente se usó calor en el procesamiento, aunque una apariencia turbia probablemente sea el resultado de gérmenes o cera que se ha precipitado desde el procesamiento.[17]

Extracción por destilación

La extracción por destilación significa exponer una planta al agua o al vapor para descomponer el material vegetal y liberar el aceite esencial. Los aceites se enfrían y condensan para su recolección.[18] La destilación se utiliza para la extracción de la cáscara de limón, aunque el aceite resultante carece del color y olor ricos de las cáscaras de limón frescas. Este aroma más suave puede ser la motivación para la destilación por vapor, pero tiene otras dos ventajas.

El aceite de cáscara de limón destilado al vapor no contiene el residuo ceroso que tendría un aceite prensado en frío. Esto hace que sea menos probable que obstruya difusores de aceite, manche telas y, al ser menos biológicamente activo, prolonga su vida útil. Otro resultado de la destilación al vapor es crear un aceite “libre de psoralenos”, o que no contiene furocumarinas. Se ha encontrado que las furocumarinas son fotocarcinogénicas. Cuando estos compuestos se exponen a la luz, pueden causar mutaciones en las células que conducen al cáncer. Esta correlación entre el uso de extractos de cáscara de limón que contienen furocumarinas y el cáncer de piel se exploró por primera vez en estudios con aceite de limón aplicado tópicamente, como lociones, en estudios con animales.[19]

La forma en que ocurre esta fotocarcinogénesis no es sencilla, lo que dificulta saber si todo uso del aceite de limón es un factor de riesgo para desarrollar cáncer de piel.[20] Estudios humanos más recientes han encontrado un aumento en la incidencia de melanoma,[21] carcinoma de células basales y carcinoma de células escamosas en personas que consumen más frutas cítricas, aunque estos estudios se centraban en furocumarinas de naranjas y pomelos,[22] no específicamente limones. Se necesitan más estudios para entender este fenómeno, pero sí crea valor para los extractos de cáscara de limón “libres de psoralenos”.

Usos en la Medicina Ayurvédica


El limón se considera la fruta más valiosa para preservar la salud.[23] Se usa ampliamente en la Medicina Ayurvédica, el sistema tradicional de medicina de la India. Es venerado por sus propiedades depurativas. Al seguir un estilo de vida ayurvédico, se recomienda comenzar el día con un vaso de agua con limón. Se cree que esto estimula la digestión y purifica el cuerpo. El limón también se usa para estimular el sistema nervioso y el sistema inmunológico. Sus propiedades antimicrobianas se utilizan para combatir virus, enfermedades infecciosas, infecciones de oído y celulitis. El aceite de limón se usa tópicamente para controlar la piel grasa.[24]  


Usos en la Medicina China

El limón se considera un alimento refrescante en la Medicina Tradicional China, armonizando el estómago y apoyando la digestión. Aunque el limón es fuertemente ácido como fruta, se considera alcalinizante para el cuerpo, lo cual es extremadamente valioso para una sociedad que consume una dieta rica en carne.[25] Se cree que el limón repone los líquidos, incluidos los fluidos corporales agotados y la sed no saciada. Como en la medicina ayurvédica, se considera que limpia el hígado, los riñones, la sangre, la boca y el tracto urinario.[26]


Enfermedad de Alzheimer
La hesperidina, un bioflavonoide que se encuentra en el aceite de la cáscara de limón, ha demostrado ayudar a mejorar los déficits cognitivos que ocurren en la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Específicamente, el cloruro de aluminio causa estrés oxidativo en el cerebro, afectando la memoria y el aprendizaje. La hesperidina, cuando se administra a los animales al mismo tiempo que el cloruro de aluminio, previene la aparición de déficits cognitivos.[27]Los aceites esenciales de cáscara de limón usados en un régimen de aromaterapia también demostraron ser beneficiosos para mejorar la función cognitiva en la enfermedad de Alzheimer en humanos.[28]  


Estrés y ansiedad

Los aceites esenciales de limón ayudaron a reducir la hormona del estrés cortisol en un ensayo realizado con ratas.[29] Oler aceites esenciales de limón puede aumentar la frecuencia cardíaca y mejorar el rendimiento mental y físico en pruebas[30]El aroma a limón mejora la sensación general de bienestar. Las personas expuestas al aroma de limón reportaron menos síntomas físicos que cuando olían algo desagradable[31]Las personas que olieron aceites esenciales de limón vieron una mayor mejora en su estado de ánimo que las personas expuestas al aroma de lavanda,[32] que fue neutral en su efecto.  


Pérdida de peso
Un ensayo con 84 mujeres premenopáusicas asignadas a no hacer cambios, usar una dieta muy baja en calorías con una bebida placebo o una dieta muy baja en calorías suplementada con jugo de limón durante 7 días mostró resultados prometedores para los beneficios del jugo de limón. Además de la pérdida de peso, que ocurrió en los grupos de limón y placebo, el grupo de limón vio una reducción en los marcadores de inflamación y no hubo pérdida de marcadores sanguíneos importantes como hemoglobina o hematocrito.[33] Se puede observar un efecto aún más fuerte al usar los polifenoles encontrados en la cáscara.[34] Un estudio en ratones obesos sobre la capacidad de estos polifenoles para descomponer el tejido adiposo mostró que el aumento de peso se moderó cuando los ratones tomaron hesperidina de las cáscaras de limón al mismo tiempo que la comida grasa.[35] Se necesitan más ensayos clínicos para ver si este efecto también es cierto en humanos.  


Prevención y Tratamiento del Cáncer

Los antioxidantes han sido reconocidos durante mucho tiempo por su efecto en el cáncer, pero se están realizando investigaciones prometedoras sobre el efecto de componentes específicos de la cáscara de limón. Uno de los flavonoides del limón, eriocitrina, ha demostrado causar apoptosis, o muerte celular, en células de leucemia mielomonocítica aguda.[36] El limoneno está siendo investigado por su efecto en el cáncer de mama. Se ha demostrado que este componente abundante se concentra bien en el tejido mamario y puede desempeñar un papel en la desaceleración de la progresión de los tumores mamarios.[37] Como cuidado complementario, cuando se administra junto con quimioterapia, los polifenoles de los extractos de limón protegieron los órganos de los efectos tóxicos de la quimioterapia.[38]  


Salud Oral
El aceite extraído de la cáscara de limón contiene varios compuestos, incluyendo 8-geraniloxipsolaren, 5-geraniloxipsolaren y 5-geraniloxi-7-metoxicumarina que son antimicrobianos. Estos compuestos, que son abundantes en el aceite esencial de cáscara de limón, eliminan gérmenes como streptococcus mutans, que causan caries y periodontitis.[39]  


Usos Tradicionales
La acción antimicrobiana y el impacto positivo en el estado de ánimo contribuyen a la popularidad del limón en productos de limpieza. El limón es astringente, lo que significa que contrae los tejidos. Esto ayuda a reducir el dolor de garganta inflamada cuando se bebe limón en agua tibia.

¿Qué debo buscar en un aceite de limón? Los aceites esenciales de limón prensados en frío pueden ser de color verde brillante a amarillo, y deben oler fuertemente a limón. Si han sido destilados, serán claros y pueden ser más delgados, ya que todas las ceras y residuos se habrán eliminado en el procesamiento.  


¿Es seguro usar aceite de limón en niños? No uses aceite de limón en la piel de los niños si estarán al sol. Puede aumentar su riesgo de quemaduras solares o cáncer de piel. Aunque otros miembros de la familia de los cítricos son alérgenos comunes, el limón generalmente no lo es, pero siempre observa si hay irritación al usar aceites esenciales en la piel. Las alergias pueden desarrollarse con el tiempo. Nunca des a un niño aceites esenciales por vía interna. Una gota de aceite esencial diluida en un aceite portador aplicada en los pies es suficiente para obtener los beneficios en un niño.  


¿Puedo cocinar con aceite de limón? ¡Absolutamente! El extracto de limón es un ingrediente popular en recetas de repostería, y la cáscara rica en nutrientes se ralla frecuentemente para hacer ralladura en la cocina. El aceite de limón es popular en aderezos para ensaladas, y puede hacerse en casa[40] para obtener la máxima frescura. Las propiedades medicinales y el aroma del limón se descomponen con el calor.  


¿Cuál es la vida útil del aceite de limón? El aceite de limón tiene una vida útil corta. Debe almacenarse en una botella oscura en un lugar fresco y oscuro porque la luz y el calor oxidan el limón. Incluso en las mejores condiciones, solo dura alrededor de 8-10 meses. Observa si se enturbia o tiene un olor desagradable como señales de que se ha estropeado.  

¿Puedo usarlo en mi piel? El aceite de limón es muy secante, por lo que no se recomienda su uso en eccema u otras condiciones de piel seca. Por esta razón, es ideal para tratar la piel grasa. Recuerda que el aceite de limón en la piel expuesta al sol es fotosensibilizante (posiblemente aumentando el riesgo de quemaduras solares) y fotocarcinogénico (potencialmente aumentando el riesgo de cáncer de piel). Esto no ocurrirá si se usa un jabón perfumado con aceites de limón, ya que el jabón descompone el aceite y no deja los furocumarinas en la piel. Usa precaución con los aceites de limón prensados en frío en productos usados en piel expuesta al sol. 

Precauciones y Consideraciones

Tenga precaución con el aceite de limón en la piel. Es fotosensibilizante y puede aumentar el riesgo de quemaduras solares o el riesgo de cáncer de piel. Aunque el jugo de limón es seguro para beber, nunca tome aceites esenciales internamente. Dosis pequeñas en un aceite portador sobre la piel o en la cocina es una excelente manera de experimentar el beneficio de la cáscara de limón rica en nutrientes.
