There is an endless number of products available to make skin tighter, darker, lighter, smoother, glowing, moist and vibrant – but with so many options, how do I choose the best cosmetics for my skin type?
Do I choose the expensive organic brand, or the mass-produced brand with scads of good reviews? It’s time to sit down and take stock of your specific needs, based on your experience and skin type. Let’s explore a few cosmetics options.
1. Choose according to your skin type
Let’s say you have oily skin, and you choose a product designed for dry skin? You’ve not done your complexion or your confidence any favors. There are generally four different skin types: oily, dry, sensitive and combination. There are specific products available for each type of skin, so remember to do a little reading before you buy!
2. Know your needs
Once you’ve determined your skin type and what type of products are best for you, it’s time to narrow down your specific goals and needs. For example, if you want to focus on reducing the prominence of fine lines and wrinkles, you might want to try a nourishing face oil.
Or are you hoping to smooth out skin discoloration or blemishes? The cosmetics you choose should focus directly on your problem areas, and not employ a one-size-fits-all strategy.
3. Pay attention to the order of ingredients
The first five ingredients listed on a product packaging typically make up about 80 percent of the product. Take some time to check out the order the ingredients are listed to ensure you are getting mostly healthy or natural ingredients that are good for your specific skin type or goals.
Be sure to check the expiration date as well to make sure the product you choose is at its freshest and most potent. Finally, if the product lists parabens and fragrances at the top of the ingredients list, avoid it!
4. Always do a patch test
You’ve done your research, narrowed down your needs, and chosen your product. Now it’s time to test it. Sometimes even the most popular products make use of cheap or unhealthy cosmetic colorants in their cosmetics.
Make sure any colorants used in your new product are natural and safe for use on skin. New products tend to have a stronger effect, as our skin is not used to them.
Take your new product and focus on a small and confined area of your skin, before you go on to cover your whole face. This way, if there are any bad or allergic reactions to the new product, you won’t end up hiding under a veil or in the doctor’s office with a swollen and red face.
5. Consider your diet
Your diet plays an important role in the feel and look of your skin. All the fantastic products in the world won’t help when you are eating unhealthy foods. Change your diet today for more skin-healthy options like fatty fish and avocados.
Watch out for flu-like SIBO symptoms, which typically come on at the beginning of a diet as the toxins in our bodies are washed away. They are usually gone within a few days, replaced by a new energy and vitality that comes with a healthier diet.
6. Stay away from the hype
Finally, it’s important to prioritize yourself when you choose a new cosmetics brand or routine. Don’t go with the crowd. Your favorite influencer or cousin might have glowing and vibrant skin, but your skin type is entirely unique to you, and so is your skincare journey.
It’s important to look up reviews and do your research before you make your final decision, but you must make sure your decision is based on the needs of your skin and your personal goals – not those of the people in your social circle.
It can sometimes be overwhelming to choose a new skincare product. There are simply so many products and so much hype out there! The thing is you don’t want to take a chance with something as important as your face. Take some time today to pamper yourself by considering your unique needs and prioritizing them. The more time you take focusing on yourself, the better you will feel and look in the long run!
