The latest figures show that 39.8% of adults in the U.S. are obese. Individuals who meet the criteria for this weight classification are at a higher risk of developing certain health conditions. These conditions include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, sleep apnea, and many others - as reported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
One particularly bothersome health issue that can result from obesity is foot pain. To combat this challenge, there are some exceptional short-term solutions. One of these is to use pain-relieving massage oil designed for foot care, which soothes sore muscles. In addition to this, there are also long-term, scientifically proven remedies for obesity-related foot pain.
Custom Orthotics
In numerous ways, an individual’s weight and overall health are linked. When a person is within a healthy weight range, he or she is more likely to be free of pain and other health conditions. However, after exceeding a body mass index (BMI) of over 30, research has found that individuals are more likely to develop “low-arched foot posture, pronated dynamic foot function, and increased plantar pressures when walking,” - as reported by Lower Extremity Review.
To help combat sinking arches, as well as the added pressure on ones feet and ankles, wearing custom orthotics is recommended. Instead of buying generic, store-bought varieties, having a proper fitting orthotic is crucial when looking to manage pain. Designs that are thicker and more rigid have been found to be better for those who are obese, as these provide the support needed to prevent damage over time.
Limit Time Walking Barefoot
Research has found a strong link between increased BMI and foot pain, with many individuals complaining of hallux valgus and hammertoes. With this in mind, another expert recommendation for reducing obesity-related foot pain - and for preventing added damage - is to limit the amount of time spent walking barefoot.
When walking around the house or outdoors without any support, the full pressure of one’s body weight is placed on the feet and ankles. With no measures to support the joints, absorb shock, and stabilize the feet, problems can quickly arise.
Symptoms such as swelling, sharp pains, and pain throughout the legs and hips quickly become more severe. That is why doctors recommend wearing support as often as possible. One way to achieve this is to designate a pair of high-quality shoes for use around the home.
Weight Management Is The Best Long-Term Solution
Although there are many effective short and long-term solutions for obesity-related foot pain, one solution stands out above the rest: weight management. Addressing the root cause is one of the only ways to permanently eliminate foot, ankle, leg, and hip pain.
Since multiple scientific studies have confirmed that the foot pain experienced with obesity is independent of age, it is important not to wait until one gets older to resolve these health concerns. By working with a doctor to create a plan to lose weight, an individual can experience lasting relief.
While the process of losing weight takes time, dedication, and significant effort, it will greatly reduce the risk of developing arthritis, having a susceptibility to ankle injuries, and experiencing damage to the joints. Until one achieves this goal, however, the use of other proven short and long-term remedies can ease the pain until it naturally begins to go away with weight loss.
