Om botaniske olier

Brugen af botaniske olier kan spores tilbage tusinder af år med rødder i kulturer så forskellige som de gamle sumerere, kinesere og det romerske imperium.[1]  Botaniske olier fremstilles af hele planten, hvilket bevarer dens duft, hovedaktive ingredienser og plantens essens. Botaniske olier lavet af forskellige planter er blevet brugt gennem historien til at ære guder,[2] forberede kroppe til begravelser,[3] bevare skønhed, hjælpe med hygiejne og behandle en bred vifte af medicinske tilstande.

Instruktioner til forberedelse og brug af planter som medicin er katalogiseret i værkerne af Dioscorides, De materia medica[4], tilbage i det første århundrede. Moderne teknologi har gjort det muligt at identificere og studere de aktive dele af planter for deres rolle i sundhed og deres anvendelighed mod forskellige medicinske tilstande. Værdien af botaniske olier har bestået tidens prøve.  

Appelsinernes egenskaber

Appelsinen menes at stamme fra tropiske områder i Asien, hvorfra den spredte sig til Indien, Afrikas østkyst og det østlige Middelhav. Udviklingen af arabiske handelsruter og udbredelsen af islam spredte appelsinen rundt i verden. Selvom appelsinen er en tropisk frugt, trives træerne bedst, hvor der er let frost om vinteren.[5] Det oprindelige navn for appelsinen stammer fra det sanskritiske ord “naranga,” som kommer fra det tamilske ord “naru,” der betyder duftende.[6]  

Typer af appelsiner

Appeltræer er de mest almindeligt dyrkede frugttræer i verden, og der findes flere sorter eller kultivarer af appelsinen, hvis latinske navn er Citrus sinensis. Forskellige kultivarer dyrkes afhængigt af, hvor godt de trives på forskellige tidspunkter af året og i forskellige jordbundsforhold. I USA producerer Californien primært kultivarerne “Washington Navel” og “Valencia”, mens Florida producerer “Hamlin,” “Pineapple” og “Valencia.”[7]

De populære kultivarer, der er nævnt ovenfor, er søde appelsiner, der værdsættes for deres juice. Rundt om i verden spises bitre frugter for at stimulere fordøjelsen. Der findes flere sorter af sure appelsiner, herunder Citrus Aurantium, der dyrkes i Vietnam og bruges i likører som Triple Sec, Grand Marnier og Curacao. Daidai, en sort af C. Aurantium, bruges terapeutisk i kinesisk og japansk medicin og udveksles ved det japanske nytår for at bringe lang levetid.[8]

Den sure Seville-appelsin bruges i marmelader på grund af sit høje pektinindhold, og chinotto-appelsinen er en smagsgiver i likører, herunder Campari. Appelsinolie udvindes fra skrællene af flere varianter, herunder den søde Valencia-appelsin, Citrus aurantium, og den sure Bergamot-appelsin, hvis olie er en velkendt smag i Earl Grey-te.[9]

Næringsstoffer

Appelsinen er en kendt lys orange, C-vitaminrig frugt, og faktisk indeholder hver kop appelsinskiver næsten 100 mg C-vitamin. Dens mindre kendte næringsstoffer inkluderer kalium, fosfor, magnesium, folat og vitamin A.[10]

Appelsinen indeholder også en række fedtsyrer, hovedsageligt umættede fedtsyrer, herunder linolsyre, palmitinsyre, linolensyre og vaccensyre.[11] Hovedalkaloiden i bitre appelsiner er para-synephrin.[12] Pektin er en vandopløselig fiber, der findes i frugter og grøntsager. Den er rigelig i appelsinen, noget kommer fra appelsinens pulp, men mest findes i skrællen. I planten hjælper pektin med at binde plantecellerne sammen, hvilket støtter frugtens form.

Over tid vil enzymer fra planten nedbryde pektin, som man kan se i en modnende frugt, der mister sin fasthed. Niveauet af pektin i appelsiner varierer fra 0,25 til 0,76 procent. Det er et bredt spænd afhængigt af appelsintypen og frugtens modenhed.[13] Pektin, som en fiberkilde, sænker kolesterol[14] og hjælper med at regulere blodsukkeret.  

Vidste du det? appelsiner

Appelsinens frugt modnes, mens ydersiden af appelsinen stadig er grøn. Gennem praksissen “afgrønning” bruger appelsinen ethylen (plantes aldringshormon) til at modne appelsiner efter høst, hvilket skaber den klare orange farve.[15] Afgrønning skal foregå under nøje kontrollerede forhold, ellers kan det føre til råd og andre problemer for frugten.[16]  

Fremstilling af appelsinolie

De æteriske olier fra appelsinen tages fra den klare orange skræl. Denne ydre skræl af citrusfrugter kaldes “flavedo,” og den er dækket med små kirtler. Hver kirtel indeholder en dråbe æterisk olie. For at udvinde den organiske olie skal skrællen fysisk brydes op.[17] Hovedkomponenterne i appelsinolie er noget forskellige mellem en sød appelsin og en bitter appelsinolie.  

Ekstraktion eller koldpresning

Ekstraktion refererer til processen med langsomt at nedbryde appelsinskræl under mekanisk tryk for at frigive olierne fra skrællens kirtler. Denne proces bruger ecuelle a piquer, eller et apparat designet til at udvinde olier fra frugtskræller.

Det begyndte i Frankrig som en skål foret med nåle til at prikke frugtens skræl og en tragt til at opsamle de frigivne olier. Det er blevet moderniseret for at imødekomme kommercielle praksisser, men bruger de samme principper med at prikke og ryste skrællen.[18]

Bitter appelsinolie opnås via koldpresning.[19] Koldpresset betyder, at olien blev udvundet ved lav temperatur. Den lave temperatur bevarer den flygtige olie, som giver plantens rige duft. Det bedste udbytte fra appelsinskræller ser ud til at komme, når skallen først er blevet tørret. Den indsamlede olie vil variere i sammensætning afhængigt af, hvor moden planten var, og hvilken appelsinsort der blev brugt.[20]

Alle appelsinsorter producerer flygtige olier, der er meget rige på monoterpenhydrokarbonet limonen. Oiliens smag kommer fra dens sesquiterpenhydrocarboner. Hesperidin og andre flavonoider er rigelige i skallerne, men de nedbrydes hurtigt under forarbejdning.[21]

Destillationsekstraktion

Destillationsekstraktion betyder at udsætte en plante for vand eller damp for at nedbryde plantematerialet og frigive æterisk olie. Olierne køles og kondenseres til opsamling. Destillation bruges til appelsinekstraktion, enten med hele frugten eller skallen.[22]

Dampdestilleret appelsinskalolie vil ikke indeholde det voksagtige rester, som en koldpresset olie ville indeholde. Dette gør dem mindre tilbøjelige til at tilstoppe oliediffusorer, plette stof og, da de er mindre biologisk aktive, forlænge holdbarheden.[23] Destillation tillader også, at furocoumariner fjernes fra appelsinolie.

Furocoumariner er fundet at være fotokarcinogene, hvilket betyder, at når disse forbindelser udsættes for lys, kan de forårsage mutationer i celler, der fører til kræft. Dette er relevant for leave-on hudprodukter, der kan være duftede med appelsinolie. Toksiciteten observeres ikke i produkter, der skylles af,[24] men der er nogle beviser for, at regelmæssig indtagelse af appelsinjuice forårsager fotosensitivitet, som kan føre til hudkræft.[25]


Medicinske anvendelser af appelsinolie

Skallerne fra både C. Aurantium og den sødere mandarinskal (Citrus reticulate) bruges i kinesisk medicin. Appelsinen anses for effektiv til at fjerne blokeringer.[26] Skallerne bruges primært til at forbedre fordøjelsen og lindre gas og oppustethed. Når symptomer på fordøjelsesforstyrrelser, såsom diarré eller forstoppelse, optræder sammen med luftvejssymptomer som slim og brystkongestion, bruges bitre appelsinskræller til at behandle dem sammen.[27]  



Topisk antimikrobiel

Efterhånden som problemet med antimikrobiel resistente organismer spreder sig, er interessen for plantekilder til svampedræbende midler, antibiotika og antivirale stoffer steget. Bitter appelsinolie er blevet undersøgt for sin succes med at behandle mikrobielle infektioner som fodsvamp og ringorm. Appelsinolie har vist lovende effekt mod svamp,[28] selvom den brugt som ren olie kan være en smule irriterende for huden.[29] Koldpresset terpenerfri Valencia appelsinolie og et ekstrakt af limonen hæmmer begge væksten af Campylobacter- og Arcobacter-arter af mikroorganismer.[30]  



Aromaterapi

Den duftende æteriske olie fra appelsin har vist sig at reducere angst før operationer, hos patienter, der venter på tandbehandling,[31] og hos børn, der fik udført tandbehandling. Disse effekter var ikke baseret på selvrapportering, men blev påvist ved lavere pulsfrekvens og salivær kortisolniveau.[32]



I en undersøgelse, der sammenlignede selvrapporteret angst og det systoliske blodtryk hos patienter, der blev udsat for nerolie fra C. Aurantium eller placebo under en koloskopi, viste det sig, at den fysiologiske ændring med lavere blodtryk skete, selv når angsten var til stede.[33]  



Kardiovaskulær sundhed

Den antioxidant-rige appelsin er nyttig til at forbedre blodgennemstrømningen gennem blodkarrene. Endotelial skade forårsaget af fedme blev fundet at forbedres hos teenagere, der fik kapsler med tørret C. aurantium i bare en måned. Længere forsøg er nødvendige, men dette understøtter en større mængde forskning i flavonoiderne og antioxidanterne, der er rigelige i appelsinskræller, og deres evne til at reparere blodkarrenes vægge.[34]  



Vægttab

Den vigtigste alkaloid i bitre appelsiner er p-synephrin, og det har været centrum for en vis kontrovers. Som en almindelig ingrediens i efedrinfrie vægttabstilskud er der anbefalinger imod dets sikkerhed. P-synephrin er en beta-agonist, hvilket betyder, at det øger nedbrydningen af fedt og produktionen af energi.



Et lignende stof, meta-synephrin, forekommer ikke naturligt i appelsiner, men fremstilles nogle gange syntetisk og tilsættes vægttabstilskud. Mens p-synephrin ikke binder sig til de receptorer i kroppen, der øger blodtrykket, gør m-synephrin det.[35] Bekymringerne om p-synephrin synes ikke at være velbegrundede, men de fortsætter alligevel.[36] Synefrin fra bitter appelsin er et forbudt stof af National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).[37]  



Traditionelle anvendelser

Appelsinolie er blevet brugt til at forbedre “træt blod,” sandsynligvis anæmi, samt træthed efter virusinfektioner, urenheder i huden, hårtab, blå mærker, smerte og forfrysninger. Den er blevet brugt til flere øjenlidelser, herunder hævede øjenlåg og blødning fra nethinden. Mest sandsynligt på grund af dens antimikrobielle virkning er den blevet brugt til behandling af liggesår.[38]  


Spørgsmål om appelsinolie

Hvad skal jeg kigge efter i en appelsinolie? Koldpressede æteriske appelsinolier er generelt lyse i farven, men kan variere afhængigt af årstiden og typen af appelsin, der er brugt. Den skal dufte kraftigt af appelsiner, selvom neroliolie fra bitre appelsiner kan dufte anderledes end den forventede citrusaroma. Hvis olien er destilleret, vil den være klar og kan være tyndere end en presset olie, da alle voksstoffer og rester er fjernet under behandlingen. Hvis den bruges som et topisk middel, der skal blive på huden, bør du vælge en psoralen-fri appelsinolie.   

Hvis jeg er allergisk over for citrus, kan jeg så bruge appelsinolie? Hvis du har allergi over for nogen form for citrus, eller hvis du er usikker på, om du har en citrusallergi, bør appelsinolie undgås, selv som et topisk middel. IgE-reaktionen, der opstår ved appelsinallergi, ser ud til at forårsage en krydsreaktion med pollen, så hvis du ved, at du har en stærk pollenallergi, bør du tale med din læge, før du prøver citrusolie.[39]  

Er det sikkert at bruge appelsinolie på børn? Brug ikke appelsinolie på børns hud, hvis de skal være i solen. Det kan øge risikoen for solskoldning og hudkræft. Appelsin, som medlem af citrusfamilien, er en almindelig allergen, så hold nøje øje med tegn på allergisk reaktion. Brug aldrig ufortyndet appelsinolie på huden, og vær altid opmærksom på irritation, når du bruger produkter med æteriske olier på huden. Allergier kan udvikle sig over tid. Giv aldrig et barn æterisk olie indvendigt. En dråbe æterisk olie fortyndet i en bæreolie, påført fødderne, er tilstrækkeligt for at opnå fordelene for et barn.  

Hvor lang er holdbarheden for appelsinolie? Opbevaret under de rette forhold vil appelsinolie kun holde cirka ni til 12 måneder. Den bør opbevares i en mørk flaske og et køligt, mørkt sted, da lys og varme vil oxidere den. Vær opmærksom på uklarhed eller en ubehagelig lugt som tegn på, at den er blevet dårlig.  

Kan jeg bruge det på min hud? Appelsinolie alene er meget irriterende for huden. Selv når det bruges som et topisk svampedræbende middel, bør det fortyndes til kun at udgøre 25 procent eller mindre af opløsningen. Appelsinolie på huden i solen er fotosensibiliserende, hvilket muligvis øger din risiko for solskoldning, og fotokarcinogent, hvilket potentielt øger risikoen for hudkræft. Dette vil ikke ske ved brug af produkter, der skylles af, såsom shampoo eller sæber, da disse ikke efterlader furocoumariner på huden. Vær forsigtig med appelsinolier i produkter, der bruges på soludsat hud, såsom lotioner.  

Forsigtighed og overvejelser

Vær forsigtig med appelsin- eller enhver citrusolie på huden. De er fotosensibiliserende og kan øge risikoen for solskoldning eller øge risikoen for hudkræft. Hvis du har høj risiko for hudkræft, kan der være grund til at være forsigtig med forbruget af appelsinjuice, da olierne i juicen og pulp også kan være fotosensibiliserende.

Mens appelsinjuice er sikkert at drikke, må essentielle olier aldrig indtages internt. Appelsinjuice, ligesom dens citrusfælle grape-frugt, kan have en vis effekt på, hvordan du metaboliserer medicin. Hvis du bruger medicin, spørg din læge, hvad et sikkert niveau af appelsinjuiceindtag er for dig.  

 Jeg har fået at vide – og der er information fra Robert Tisserand – at sød appelsinolie ikke er fototoksisk. Sikkerhedsforanstaltninger, der bør tages for bitter appelsin, er ikke nødvendige ved sød appelsin.
