Om botaniska oljor

Användningen av botaniska oljor kan spåras tillbaka tusentals år, med rötter i kulturer så olika som de gamla sumererna, kineserna och Romarriket.[1]  Botaniska oljor framställs från hela växten, vilket bevarar dess doft, huvudsakliga aktiva ingredienser och växtens essens. Botaniska oljor gjorda av olika växter har använts genom historien för att hedra gudar,[2] förbereda kroppar för begravningar,[3] bevara skönhet, hjälpa till med hygien och behandla en mängd olika medicinska tillstånd.

Instruktioner för beredning och användning av växter som medicin finns katalogiserade i Dioscorides verk, De materia medica[4], redan på första århundradet. Modern teknik har gjort det möjligt att identifiera och studera de aktiva delarna av växter för deras roll i hälsa och deras användbarhet mot olika medicinska tillstånd. Värdet av botaniska oljor har stått sig genom tiden.  

Apelsinernas egenskaper

Apelsinen tros vara ursprunglig i tropiska områden i Asien, varifrån den spreds till Indien, Afrikas östkust och östra Medelhavet. Utvecklingen av arabiska handelsvägar och spridningen av islam förde apelsinen runt om i världen. Även om apelsinen är en tropisk frukt, växer träden bäst där det är lätt frost på vintern.[5] Det ursprungliga namnet för apelsinen kommer från det sanskritiska ordet ”naranga,” som kommer från det tamilska ordet ”naru” som betyder doftande.[6]  

Typer av apelsiner

Apelsinträd är det mest odlade fruktträdet i världen, och det finns flera sorter eller kultivarer av apelsinen, vars latinska namn är Citrus sinensis. Olika kultivarer odlas beroende på hur väl de trivs vid olika tider på året och i olika jordförhållanden. I USA producerar Kalifornien främst kultivarerna ”Washington Navel” och ”Valencia” och Florida producerar ”Hamlin,” ”Pineapple” och ”Valencia.”[7]

De populära kultivarerna som listas ovan är söta apelsiner värderade för sin juice. Runt om i världen konsumeras bittra frukter för att stimulera matsmältningen. Det finns flera sura apelsinsorter, inklusive Citrus Aurantium som odlas i Vietnam och används i likörer som Triple Sec, Grand Marnier och Curacao. Daidai, en sort av C. Aurantium, används terapeutiskt i kinesisk och japansk medicin och utbyts vid det japanska nyåret för att ge lång livslängd.[8]

Den sura Sevilla-apelsinen används i marmelader på grund av sitt höga pektininnehåll, och chinotto-apelsinen är en smaksättning i likörer inklusive Campari. Apelsinolja tas från skalet på flera sorter, inklusive den söta Valencia-apelsinen, Citrus aurantium, och den sura Bergamotsorten, vars olja är en välkänd smak i Earl Grey-te.[9]

Näringsämnen

Apelsinen är en välkänd ljusorange frukt rik på vitamin C, och varje kopp apelsinskivor ger nästan 100 mg vitamin C. Dess mindre kända näringsämnen inkluderar kalium, fosfor, magnesium, folat och vitamin A.[10]

Apelsinen innehåller också en rad fettsyror, främst omättade fettsyror, inklusive linolsyra, palmitinsyra, linolensyra och vaccensyra.[11] Huvudalkaloiden i bittra apelsiner är para-synefrin.[12] Pektin är en vattenlöslig fiber som finns i frukter och grönsaker. Den är riklig i apelsinen, en del kommer från apelsinens fruktkött, men mer finns i skalet. I själva växten hjälper pektin till att binda växtcellerna samman, vilket stödjer fruktens form.

Med tiden bryter enzymer från växten ner pektin, vilket du märker i en mogen frukt som förlorar sin styvhet. Mängden pektin i apelsiner varierar från 0,25 till 0,76 procent. Det är ett brett spann beroende på apelsinsort och fruktens mognadsgrad.[13] Pektin, som en fiberrik källa, sänker kolesterolet[14] och hjälper till att reglera blodsockret.  

Visste du att? apelsiner

Apelsinens frukt mognar medan utsidan av apelsinen fortfarande är grön. Genom metoden ”avfärgning” använder apelsinen etylen (växternas åldershormon) för att mogna apelsiner efter skörd, vilket skapar den ljusorange färgen.[15] Avfärgning måste ske under noggrant kontrollerade förhållanden, annars kan det leda till ruttnande och andra problem för frukten.[16]  

Förberedelse av apelsinolja

De eteriska oljorna från apelsinen tas från det ljusorange skalet. Detta yttre skal på citrusfrukter kallas ”flavedo” och är täckt med små körtlar. Varje körtel innehåller en droppe eterisk olja. För att extrahera den organiska oljan måste skalet fysiskt brytas upp.[17] Huvudkomponenterna i apelsinolja skiljer sig något mellan söt apelsin och bitter apelsinolja.  

Expression eller kallpressning

Expression syftar på processen att långsamt bryta ner apelsinskal under mekaniskt tryck för att frigöra oljorna från skalets körtlar. Denna process använder ecuelle a piquer, eller en apparat designad för att extrahera oljor från fruktskal.

Det började i Frankrike som en skål fodrad med nålar för att sticka hål på fruktens skal och en tratt för att samla upp de frigjorda oljorna. Den har moderniserats för att passa kommersiella metoder, men använder samma principer för att sticka och röra om i skalet.[18]

Bitter apelsinolja erhålls genom kallpressning.[19] Kallpressad betyder att oljan pressades ut vid låg temperatur. Den låga temperaturen bevarar den flyktiga oljan, som ger växtens rika doft. Den bästa avkastningen från apelsinskal verkar komma när skalet först har torkats. Den insamlade oljan varierar i sammansättning beroende på hur mogen växten var och vilken apelsinsort som användes.[20]

Alla apelsinsorter producerar flyktiga oljor som är mycket rika på monoterpenhydrokarbonen limonen. Oljans smak kommer från dess seskviterpenhydrokarboner. Hesperidin och andra flavonoider finns rikligt i skalen, men de bryts snabbt ner under bearbetning.[21]

Destillationsextraktion

Destillationsextraktion innebär att en växt utsätts för vatten eller ånga för att bryta ner växtmaterialet och frigöra eterisk olja. Oljorna kyls ner och kondenseras för insamling. Destillation används för apelsextraktion, antingen med hela frukten eller skalet.[22]

Ångdestillerad apelsinskalolja innehåller inte det vaxartade rester som en kallpressad olja skulle innehålla. Detta gör att de är mindre benägna att täppa till oljediffusorer, fläcka tyg och eftersom de är mindre biologiskt aktiva förlängs hållbarheten.[23] Destillation gör det också möjligt att avlägsna furokumariner från apelsinoljor.

Furokumariner har visat sig vara fotokarcinogena, vilket betyder att när dessa föreningar exponeras för ljus kan de orsaka mutationer i celler som leder till cancer. Detta är viktigt för leave-on hudprodukter som kan doftsättas med apelsinolja. Toxiciteten observeras inte i produkter som sköljs bort,[24] men det finns viss evidens för att regelbunden konsumtion av apelsinjuice orsakar fotosensitivitet som kan leda till hudcancer.[25]


Medicinska användningar för apelsinolja

Traditionell kinesisk medicin och användning av apelsinolja

Skalen från både C. Aurantium och den sötare mandarinen (Citrus reticulate) används inom kinesisk medicin. Apelsinen anses vara effektiv för att rensa blockeringar.[26] Skalen används främst för att förbättra matsmältningen och lindra gaser och uppblåsthet. När symtom på matsmältningsstörningar, såsom diarré eller förstoppning, uppträder tillsammans med andningssymtom som slem och brösttäthet, används bittra apelsinskal för att behandla dem tillsammans.[27]  



Topisk antimikrobiell

I takt med att problemet med antimikrobiellt resistenta organismer sprider sig har intresset för växtbaserade källor till svampdödande, antibiotika och antivirala medel ökat. Bitter apelsinolja har studerats för sin framgång vid behandling av mikrobiella infektioner, såsom fotsvamp och ringorm. Apelsinolja har visat lovande effekt mot svamp,[28] även om den som ren olja kan vara något irriterande för huden.[29] Kallpressad terpenfri Valencia-apelsinolja och ett extrakt av limonen hämmar båda tillväxten av Campylobacter- och Arcobacter-arter av bakterier.[30]  



Aromaterapi

Den doftande eteriska apelsinoljan har visat sig minska ångest före operationer, hos patienter som väntar på tandbehandling,[31] och hos barn som genomgick tandvård. Dessa effekter baserades inte på självrapportering, utan visades genom sänkta pulsfrekvenser och salivkortisolnivåer.[32]



I en studie som jämförde självrapporterad ångest och systoliskt blodtryck hos patienter som exponerades för neroliolja från C. Aurantium eller placebo vid koloskopi visade sig den fysiologiska förändringen med sänkt blodtryck ske även när ångest upplevdes.[33]  



Kardiovaskulär hälsa

Den antioxidant-rika apelsinen är användbar för att förbättra flödet genom blodkärlen. Endotelial skada från fetma förbättrades hos tonåringar som fick kapslar med torkad C. aurantium under bara en månad. Längre studier behövs, men detta stöder en större mängd forskning om flavonoider och antioxidanter som är rikliga i apelsinskal och deras förmåga att reparera blodkärlens väggar.[34]  



Viktminskning

Den huvudsakliga alkaloiden i bittra apelsiner är p-synefrin och den har varit föremål för viss kontrovers. Som en vanlig ingrediens i efedrinfria viktminskningstillskott finns rekommendationer mot dess säkerhet. P-synefrin är en beta-agonist, vilket betyder att den ökar nedbrytningen av fett och produktionen av energi.



En liknande substans, meta-synefrin, förekommer inte naturligt i apelsiner, men syntetiseras ibland och tillsätts i viktminskningstillskott. Medan p-synefrin inte binder till de receptorer i kroppen som höjer blodtrycket, gör m-synefrin det.[35] Bekymren kring p-synefrin verkar inte vara välgrundade, men de kvarstår.[36] Synefinen i bitter apelsin är ett förbjudet ämne enligt National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).[37]  



Traditionella användningsområden

Apelsinolja har använts för att förbättra ”trött blod”, troligen anemi, samt trötthet från virusinfektioner, orenheter i huden, håravfall, blåmärken, smärta och köldskador. Den har använts för flera ögonsjukdomar, inklusive svullna ögonlock och blödning från näthinnan. Troligen på grund av dess antimikrobiella verkan har den använts för att behandla liggsår.[38]  


Frågor om apelsinolja

Vad ska jag leta efter i en apelsinolja? Kallpressade apelsineteriska oljor är vanligtvis bleka i färgen, men kan variera beroende på årstid och vilken typ av apelsin som använts. Den ska dofta starkt av apelsin, även om neroliolja från bittra apelsiner kan dofta annorlunda än den förväntade citrusdoften. Om oljan har destillerats är den klar och kan vara tunnare än en pressad olja, eftersom alla vaxer och rester har tagits bort i processen. Om du använder den som ett topikalt medel som ska stanna på huden, leta efter en psoralenfri apelsinolja.   

Om jag är allergisk mot citrus, kan jag använda apelsinolja? Om du är allergisk mot någon form av citrus, eller om du är osäker på om du har en citrusallergi, bör apelsinolja undvikas, även som ett topikalt medel. IgE-reaktionen som uppstår vid apelsinallergi verkar orsaka en korsreaktion med pollen, så om du vet att du har en stark pollenallergi, prata med din läkare innan du provar citrusolja.[39]  

Är det säkert att använda apelsinolja på barn? Använd inte apelsinolja på barns hud om de ska vara i solen. Det kan öka risken för solbränna och hudcancer. Apelsin, som tillhör citrusfamiljen, är en vanlig allergen, så var noga med att se tecken på allergisk reaktion. Använd aldrig outspädd apelsinolja på huden och var alltid uppmärksam på irritation när du använder någon beredning med eteriska oljor på huden. Allergier kan utvecklas över tid. Ge aldrig ett barn någon eterisk olja internt. En droppe eterisk olja utspädd i en bärarolja applicerad på fötterna räcker för att ge barnet fördelarna.  

Hur lång är hållbarheten för apelsinolja? Om den förvaras under rätt förhållanden håller apelsinolja bara i ungefär nio till tolv månader. Den bör förvaras i en mörk flaska och på en sval, mörk plats eftersom ljus och värme oxiderar den. Var uppmärksam på grumlighet eller en obehaglig lukt som tecken på att den har blivit dålig.  

Kan jag använda det på min hud? Apelsinolja ensam är mycket irriterande för huden. Även när den används som ett topiskt svampmedel bör den spädas till högst 25 procent av lösningen. Apelsinolja på huden i solen är fotosensibiliserande, vilket kan öka risken för solbränna, och fotokarcinogen, vilket potentiellt kan öka risken för hudcancer. Detta sker inte vid användning av produkter som sköljs av, såsom schampo eller tvålar, eftersom dessa inte lämnar furokumariner på huden. Var försiktig med apelsinoljor i produkter som används på solexponerad hud, såsom lotioner.  

Försiktighet och överväganden

Var försiktig med apelsin- eller någon citrusolja på huden. De är fotosensibiliserande och kan öka risken för solbränna eller öka risken för hudcancer. Om du har hög risk för hudcancer kan det finnas anledning att vara försiktig med apelsinjuicekonsumtion, eftersom oljorna i juicen och fruktköttet också kan vara fotosensibiliserande.

Medan apelsinjuice är säker att dricka, ska eteriska oljor aldrig tas internt. Apelsinjuice, liksom dess citruskollega grapefrukt, kan påverka hur du metaboliserar mediciner. Om du använder medicin, fråga din läkare vad som är en säker nivå av apelsinjuiceintag för dig.  

 Jag har fått lära mig – och det finns information från Robert Tisserand – att söt apelsinolja inte är fototoxisk. Säkerhetsåtgärder som bör vidtas för bitter apelsin är inte nödvändiga för söt apelsin.
