Om botaniska oljor

Användningen av botaniska oljor kan spåras tillbaka tusentals år, med rötter i kulturer så olika som de gamla sumererna, kineserna och Romarriket.[1]

Botaniska oljor framställs från hela växten, vilket bevarar dess doft, huvudaktiva ingredienser och växtens essens. Botaniska oljor gjorda av olika växter har använts genom historien för att hedra gudar,[2] förbereda kroppar för begravningar,[3] bevara skönhet, hjälpa till med hygien och behandla en mängd olika medicinska tillstånd. Instruktioner för beredning och användning av växter som medicin finns katalogiserade i Dioscorides verk, De materia medica[4], redan under första århundradet.

Modern teknik har gjort det möjligt att identifiera och studera växters aktiva delar för deras roll i hälsa och deras användbarhet mot olika medicinska tillstånd. Värdet av botaniska oljor har stått sig genom tiderna.  

Egenskaper hos nattljus

Nattljus är en vildblomma som började i Centralamerika och Mexiko för cirka 70 000 år sedan och spred sig norrut för att växa över hela USA, särskilt längs flodbankar och i sandig jord. Det är en blommande växt vars gula blommor bara öppnar sig på kvällen, vilket gett den dess namn.[5]

Europeiska bosättare tog med sig roten tillbaka till England och Tyskland, där den konsumerades som föda, och till Italien, varifrån den spreds över Europa. Den finns först omnämnd i botaniska referenser 1587, och under 1500-talet:e århundradet kallades den ”Kungarnas botemedel” för sin användbarhet vid många sjukdomar. Dess latinska namn, Oenothera, betyder ”en växt vars saft kan orsaka sömn”, vilket fångar dess lugnande egenskaper.[6] Ursprungsamerikaner gnuggade nattljus på sina mokasiner för att maskera lukten och hjälpa dem att komma närmare djur. Man trodde att det gav tur vid jakt, möjligen av denna anledning.[7]  

Näringsämnen

Hela nattljusväxten kan användas som föda. Den nötaktiga roten åt ursprungsamerikanerna[8] och engelsmännen[9] och tyskarna kallade det rampion[10] och föredrog det som mer näringsrikt än nötkött.[11] De unga bladen kan ätas råa i sallader.

Bladen blir mycket bittra, men kan kokas i flera ombyten av vatten för att bli mer smakliga. De ätbara fröna har använts som ersättning för vallmofrön. Det är från fröna som den värdefulla nattljusoljan utvinns. Fröoljan är den enda delen av växten som fortfarande rutinmässigt konsumeras, och de essentiella fettsyrorna är de enda näringsämnen i växten som har studerats.

Nattljusets fetter är essentiella fettsyror. Essentiella näringsämnen är sådana som kroppen inte kan tillverka själv – de måste komma från kosten. Linolsyra, den dominerande fettsyran i nattljusolja, finns också rikligt i gröna bladgrönsaker, frön och nötter.[12]

Även om omega-3-fettsyror är mer kända för sina hälsofördelar kräver hudens och hårets kost och hälsa en balans mellan omega-6 och omega-3-fettsyror. Den amerikanska kosten innehåller ofta mycket omega-6, som kan omvandlas till den inflammatoriska arakidonsyran, särskilt när källan är kött. Växtbaserade källor till omega-6-fettsyror omvandlas till gamma-linolensyra, som är antiinflammatorisk, innan de blir arakidonsyra.[13]

Medan nattljusolja främst innehåller linolsyra, innehåller den också upp till 10 % gamma-linolensyra (GLA).[14] GLA i kroppen omvandlas till dihomo-GLA (DGLA), som är antiinflammatoriskt, innan det blir arakidonsyra. Omvandlingen kräver tillräckligt med magnesium, zink och vitaminerna C, B3 och B6.[15] GLA är rikligt i människans bröstmjölk, där det verkar hjälpa till att reglera nivån av IgE, ett immunoglobulin kopplat till allergier.[16] Förutom bröstmjölk är GLA sällsynt i kosten och finns endast i svarta vinbärs- och gurkörtsfrön samt i spirulina.[17]

Nattljusolja innehåller också oljesyra, palmitinsyra och stearinsyra. Dessa fetter bidrar till nattljusoljans mjukgörande egenskaper, vilket gör den användbar i kosmetika, men dessa fetter finns rikligt i många växter. På samma sätt är EPO en källa till växtsteroler, som hjälper till att sänka kolesterol, men finns också i många andra växtbaserade livsmedel. Nattljus värderas främst för sitt höga innehåll av GLA.[18]  

Beredning av nattljusolja

Kallpressad

Expellerpressning innebär att nattljusfrön långsamt bryts ner under mekaniskt tryck, till exempel mellan två roterande metallplattor, för att frigöra fetterna. Kallpressad betyder att oljan expellerpressats vid låg temperatur.

Den låga temperaturen förhindrar att oljan förstörs[19] och hjälper till att behålla växtens gynnsamma egenskaper, inklusive växtsteroler.[20] De värdefulla ämnenas flyktighet gör det till en mycket känslig process som måste utföras inom ett snävt temperaturområde.[21]

Lösningsmedelsextraktion

Mängden olja som utvinns från nattljusfröet är ganska låg, men mycket värdefull. Mängden olja ökas avsevärt genom att använda ett lösningsmedel som hexan under extraktionsprocessen. Hexanen avlägsnas sedan under tryck vid låga temperaturer.

I ett försök att helt eliminera risken för exponering för lösningsmedel har olika företag utforskat alternativa metoder. En sådan är superkritisk vätskeextraktion med koldioxid. Detta innebär att oljan extraheras under noggrant övervakade temperatur- och tryckförhållanden, där koldioxid används för att dra ut maximal mängd olja.[22]

Medicinska användningsområden för nattljusolja

Användning inom ayurvedisk och kinesisk medicin

Nattljusolja anses vara kylande och närande inom ayurvedisk medicin, Indiens traditionella medicinsystem, vilket gör den användbar vid inflammatoriska tillstånd. Den används vid eksem, allergier, autoimmuna sjukdomar och immunbrister.[23]

Både ayurvedisk medicin och traditionell kinesisk medicin erkänner värdet av nattljusolja för att hantera kvinnans reproduktionscykler, och inom kinesisk medicin används den för att röra blodet och förbättra cirkulationen.[24]  

Kvinnors hälsa

Nattljusolja är mest eftertraktad som hjälp för kvinnors hälsa, inklusive bröstcystor och smärta (även kallat mastalgi).[25] Det är också hjälpsamt vid PMS[26], högt blodtryck under graviditet, underlättande av förlossning[27] och hantering av värmevallningar vid klimakteriet[28]. Det finns behov av större studier[29] för att bekräfta dess fördel vid behandling, men nattljusets antiinflammatoriska verkan stöder dess traditionella användning för dessa tillstånd.[30]

Eksem

Sedan 1930-talet har forskare trott att en brist på essentiella fettsyror (EFA) eller en onormal EFA-metabolism ligger till grund för eksem. Personer med eksem har mycket linolsyra, men kan ha svårt att omvandla den till antiinflammatorisk GLA. Om det stämmer bör det vara hjälpsamt att komplettera med GLA-rik nattljusolja.[31]

Studier har inte konsekvent visat fördelar, men det kan handla om att hitta rätt dos att använda.[32] Den kan vara hjälpsam för att hantera biverkningar från isotretinoin, en aknemedicin.[33] Fler studier behövs för att fastställa effektiviteten.

Kardiovaskulär hälsa

Nattljusolja har visat sig hjälpa mot smärta och förlust av nervfunktion kopplad till diabetisk neuropati. Resultaten krävde att man tog en hög dos olja i sex månader och fungerade bättre hos personer med välreglerat blodsocker.[34]

Nattljus kan också vara hjälpsamt för att hantera blodsockret hos kvinnor med graviditetsdiabetes. Fler studier behövs.[35] Eftersom den hjälper cirkulationen finns intresse för dess förmåga att förbättra symtomen vid Raynauds sjukdom, men återigen behövs fler studier.  

Artrit

Essentiella fettsyror har studerats för deras förmåga att lindra smärta vid artrit. Fetter i nattljusolja ökar direkt mängden DGLA i blodet. DGLA är en starkt antiinflammatorisk fett som bör verka för att minska smärta och skydda leder.

Vissa studier är lovande, men mer bevis behövs innan nattljus kan rekommenderas som förstahandsbehandling för reumatoid artrit.[36]  

Kosmetika

Nattljusolja används i kosmetiska produkter som tvålar och lotioner. Den absorberas väl av huden och mjukar upp den genom att tillföra dess fördelaktiga oljor. Topikalt används den ofta tillsammans med en bärarolja som förbättrar nattljusoljans stabilitet.[37]  

Traditionella användningsområden

Ursprungsbefolkningar använde bladen från nattljus för att göra omslag för att läka blåmärken och hemorrojder. Det ansågs vara en botemedel mot reumatism, förlamning och gikt. Hela växten, beredd som te eller tinktur, användes som ett lugnande medel mot sömnlöshet, rastlöshet och för att lugna lungorna vid trängsel som bronkit.[38]

Dess användning för rastlöshet ledde troligen till den moderna föreslagna effekten att den är hjälpsam vid ADHD, men det finns ännu inte tillräckligt med forskning som visar den effekten. Den har också använts för att hjälpa kroppen att reparera sig från effekterna av för mycket alkohol.[39]  

 

Frågor om kvällsprimörsolja

Vad ska jag leta efter i en kvällsprimörsolja? De flesta kvällsprimörsoljor säljs i kapslar. GLA är ganska instabilt och blir snabbt härsken, så leta efter produkter som har tillsatts en antioxidant, som vitamin E. Använd tillverkare som du kan lita på. Det finns många exempel på att kvällsprimörsolja i kapslar ersatts med billigare soja- eller safflorolja.[40]  

Kan jag vara allergisk mot kvällsprimörsolja? Allergier mot kvällsprimör rapporteras sällan, men är möjliga. Om du vet att du är allergisk mot kvällsprimörblommor eller GLA, använd inte kvällsprimör topiskt eller internt. Fråga din läkare om testning för allergi mot kvällsprimör eller andra växter i onagraceae-familjen.  

Är det säkert att använda kvällsprimörsolja på barn? Kvällsprimörsolja har studerats och visat sig vara säker för barn. Den är inte en vanlig allergen, men om ditt barn är allergiskt mot kvällsprimör eller andra växter i onagraceae-familjen, använd inte kvällsprimörsolja topiskt eller internt som kosttillskott.

Kan jag laga mat med kvällsprimörsolja? Du bör inte använda kvällsprimörsolja för matlagning. Den är extremt instabil vid värme, men växten är ätbar och näringsrik. Unga blad kan tillsättas i sallad och rötterna kan ätas. En basolja som olivolja kan infuseras med kvällsprimörblommor för att fånga några av växtens egenskaper. Oljan kan sedan användas precis som olivolja.[41]  

Hur lång är hållbarheten för kvällsprimörsolja? Mycket kort! Om den förvaras under rätt förhållanden håller kvällsprimörsolja bara ungefär sex månader. Vitamin E tillsätts i kvällsprimörsolja för att skydda den från oxidativ stress som uppstår när oljan börjar bli härsken, vilket förlänger hållbarheten. Kvällsprimörsoljor behöver förvaras i kylskåp, och när den används i beredningar bör den tillsättas efter alla steg som involverar värme.  

Kommer inte kvällsprimörsolja att täppa till mina porer? Kvällsprimörsolja är en bra mjukgörare, vilket betyder att den är bra på att bryta ner och mjuka upp huden. Ändå kan ansiktets porer vara känsligare för att täppas till av tjocka oljor. Om du har tendens till fet hud kan kvällsprimörsolja vara bättre att använda på andra delar av kroppen.  

Försiktighet och överväganden

Det finns viss bevisning för att kvällsprimör kan öka anfallsaktivitet. Använd inte kvällsprimör, kvällsprimörsolja eller kvällsprimörolja om du har epilepsi eller är benägen att få anfall av något slag.

Kvällsprimör kan öka blödning, så använd inte om du har en blödnings- eller koagulationsrubbning, tar blodförtunnande mediciner eller ska genomgå operation. Kvällsprimörolja kan orsaka magbesvär, illamående, diarré, lös avföring eller huvudvärk.
