Om botaniska oljor

Användningen av botaniska oljor kan spåras tillbaka tusentals år, med rötter i kulturer så olika som de forntida sumererna, kineserna och Romarriket.[1] Botaniska oljor framställs från hela växten, vilket bevarar dess doft, huvudsakliga aktiva ingredienser och växtens essens. Botaniska oljor gjorda av olika växter har använts genom historien för att hedra gudar,[2] förbereda kroppar för begravningar,[3] bevara skönhet, hjälpa till med hygien och behandla en mängd olika medicinska tillstånd. Instruktioner för beredning och användning av växter som medicin finns katalogiserade i Dioscorides verk, De materia medica.[4], redan på första århundradet. Modern teknik har gjort det möjligt att identifiera och studera de aktiva delarna av växter för deras roll i hälsa och deras användbarhet mot olika medicinska tillstånd.  

Egenskaper hos mandlar

Det urgamla mandelträdet har haft en hedrad plats i många kulturer. Mandelträd nämns flera gånger i Bibeln. Som en tidig vårblommande växt betyder dess hebreiska namn ”flitig” eller ”vaksam” och det ansågs vara ett tecken på Guds plötsliga och snabba straff i det forntida Israel. Kineserna ser mandeln som en symbol för bestående sorg och kvinnlig skönhet.[5].  

Typer av mandlar

Den rikliga oljan från mandeln har en behagligt mild doft, ljus färg och har inte en stark smak[6]. Det finns två huvudtyper av mandlar, söt (Prunus dulcis) och bitter (Prunus amara eller amygdalus). Den söta mandeltypen används mer eftersom den producerar mer av de värdefulla oljor som mandlar är kända för och den innebär mindre risk för toxicitet. Den bittra mandeltypen innehåller amygdalin, liksom fröna från andra medlemmar i Prunus-familjen, inklusive körsbär, aprikoser och plommon. När amygdalin bryts ner, producerar interaktionen med vatten och tarmbakterier stora mängder blåsyra,[7] eller cyanid. Den bittra mandeln innehåller också bensaldehyd, dess eteriska olja, som är giftig[8]. Eftersom dessa ämnen är giftiga, eller till och med dödliga i mycket små doser, bör den bittra mandeln inte ätas och säljs inte i USA.  

 

Näringsämnen

Mandel är en näringsrik kraftkälla. Mandlar består av ungefär 21 procent protein, 50 procent fett, 22 procent kolhydrater, varav mer än hälften är fiber, och fem procent vatten, vilket gör mandelmjöl till ett populärt val för diabetiker.[9] Mandels fettsyror är huvudsakligen omättade fetter, med vissa mättade fetter och inget kolesterol. Specifikt innehåller mandelolja 4 till 9 procent palmitinsyra, 0,9 till 3 procent stearinsyra, 50 till 86 procent oljesyra och 20 till 30 procent linolsyra.[10][11] syra.[12] Av dessa är palmitinsyra och stearinsyra mättade fettsyror, men utgör ungefär mindre än 12 procent av de totala fettsyrorna. Linolsyra, som är riklig i mandeln, är en omega-6-fettsyra. Medan omega-3-fettsyror är mer kända för sina hälsofördelar kräver kosten och hälsan för hud och hår en balans mellan omega-6 och omega-3 fettsyror. Den amerikanska kosten tenderar att innehålla en stor mängd omega-6, vilket kan omvandlas till den inflammatoriska arakidonsyran, särskilt när källan är kött. Växtkällor till omega-6-fettsyror omvandlas till gamma-linolensyra, som är antiinflammatorisk, innan de blir arakidonsyra. Medelhavskosten, som är erkänd som ett effektivt sätt att bekämpa hjärtsjukdomar, är rik på växtkällor till omega-6, inklusive mandlar.[13]
Förutom fettsyror innehåller mandlar fettlösliga näringsämnen som vitamin E, mestadels som den potenta antioxidanten alfa-tokoferol, och vitamin A. B-vitaminer som finns i mandlar inkluderar B1 (tiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 och folat. Mandlar är en rik källa till kalium. Flera andra mineraler finns också i mandlar, inklusive kalcium, järn, magnesium, fosfor, zink och en liten mängd natrium.[14]

Även om alla dessa näringsämnen finns i all mandelolja kan mängden av varje näringsämne i en viss mängd olja variera. Växter anpassar sig till sin miljö, så en växt som odlas med mer eller mindre sol eller nederbörd[18] kan anpassa sig till dessa förhållanden och producera något olika näringsprofiler.  

Tillverkning av mandelolja

Mandel är tekniskt sett varken en nöt eller en frukt! Det är en stenfrukt, vilket syftar på dess flera lager. Det yttre skalet på mandelträdets frukt är ett tjockt, grönt hölje. Inuti skalet finns endokarpen, som är hård och träig, liknande utsidan av kärnan hos dess släkting, persikan. Inuti endokarpen ligger fröet, eller mandeln.[19] Mandelolja utvinns från detta mogna frö.  

Expellerpressad och kallpressad

Expellerpressning avser processen där mandlar långsamt bryts ner under mekaniskt tryck, såsom två roterande metallplattor, för att frigöra fetterna från mandeln.[20] Kallpressad betyder att oljan pressades med en expeller vid låg temperatur.[21] Den låga temperaturen förhindrar att oljan förstörs. Mandelolja som produceras genom kallpressning är mörkare i färgen än en raffinerad process, men anses ha högre egenskaper som gör den ursprungliga växten värdefull, inklusive dess enkelomättade fetter och antimikrobiella aktivitet.[22] Destillationsextraktion för de eteriska oljorna från söta mandlar är vanligtvis inte nödvändig eftersom oljorna är så rikliga i fröna. Även en hemmagjord process räcker för att frigöra oljan.[23]

Destillationsextraktion

Destillationsextraktion innebär att en växt utsätts för vatten eller ånga för att bryta ner växtmaterialet och frigöra den eteriska oljan. Oljorna kyls och kondenseras för insamling.[24] Destillationsextraktion används för att utvinna amygdalin från bittra mandlar. Amygdalin finns inte i den råa oljan, så expellerextraktion skulle inte fungera. Amygdalinet bildas genom verkan av emulsin, en komponent i den bittra mandeln som aktiveras när vatten är närvarande. Om temperaturen är för hög när denna reaktion sker bryts emulsin ner och amygdalinet kan inte frigöras.

När amygdalin produceras frigör den bittra mandeln också den eteriska oljan bensaldehyd och en liten mängd vätecyanid, även kallad prussisk syra. Denna prussiska syra, eller cyanid, är extremt giftig men kan avlägsnas med ytterligare destillation, vilket lämnar olja av bitter mandel fri från prussisk syra, även kallad olja av bitter mandel, FFPA. Detta är den smak som är populär i matlagning.

Även när den är cyanidfri är bensaldehyd och amygdalin också giftiga, så den bittra oljan används i droppdos.[25][26] Bitter mandeloljaextrakt har en stark mandelsmak och används i matlagning. Råa bittra mandlar säljs inte i USA. Kommersiella källor till mandelextrakt kan göras från amygdalinproducerande frukter från samma familj som mandeln, inklusive persikor eller aprikoser. Dessa frukter producerar dock mindre amygdalin, så smaken är mindre stark än när amygdalin tas från bittra mandlar.[27]  

 

Medicinska användningar för mandelolja

Användningar i ayurvedisk och kinesisk medicin
Mandelolja tas internt och appliceras topiskt. I forntida kinesisk medicin och ayurvedisk medicin (Indiens traditionella medicinsystem) används mandelolja vid torra hudtillstånd, inklusive eksem och psoriasis.
Mandel i ayurvedisk medicin anses vara den bästa av alla nötter; kapabel att förbättra kroppens essens som stödjer intellekt, andlighet och reproduktionsförmåga. Både kinesisk och ayurvedisk medicin anser att mandlar är effektiva för att rensa tillstånd i lungorna, såsom bronkial trängsel. Oljan kan tas internt eller användas i massage för att stimulera rensning av lungorna.[28]  
Kosmetika
Mandelolja är en populär basolja i kosmetiska produkter på grund av dess behagliga, milda egenskaper. Den absorberas väl i huden och mjukar upp den, vilket gör den till ett förstahandsval för tvåltillverkning, läppbalsam och badoljor.[29]  
Massage
Mandelolja är en bärolja för mediciner och används i stor utsträckning som bärare för andra eteriska oljor.[30] eftersom dess milda doft inte överröstar andra dofter. Det är en favorit bland massageterapeuter. Mandelolja är något oljig, vilket hjälper massageterapeutens hand att glida på huden, men den absorberas väl.[31] De fördelaktiga fetterna och näringsämnena i mandelolja kan absorberas genom huden. Användning av mandelolja för massage av för tidigt födda spädbarn förbättrade deras neurologiska poäng och ökade deras viktuppgång.[32] jämfört med placebo.  
Ärr och bristningar
Mandelolja absorberas väl och är rik på fettlösliga vitaminerna E och A. Dessa näringsämnen bidrar sannolikt till den observerade fördelen mandelolja har för att minska ärrbildning efter operation och för att jämna ut och föryngra huden.[33] Det finns viss evidens för effektiviteten av massage med mandelolja för att minska bristningar under graviditet.[34]  
Hjärt-kärlhälsa
Vid intern användning är mandelolja en rik källa till omega-6-fettsyror och flera andra näringsämnen. Många studier har gjorts på hela mandeln och visat fördelar för hjärt-kärlsjukdomar, inklusive höjning av HDL,[35] det ”goda kolesterolet”, minskning av bukfett och sänkning av LDL, det ”dåliga kolesterolet”, genom att ersätta snacks med högt kolhydratinnehåll,[36] sänkning av glukosnivåer,[37] förebyggande av leverskador och förbättring av blodkärlens funktion.[38]  
Mag- och tarmhälsa
En växande mängd forskning stöder vikten av tarmens mikrobiom för hälsan. En studie jämförde effekten av nymalda mandlar med mandlar som hade avfettats på tarmens bakterier. Studien fann att mandlar som nyligen malts med fetterna intakta stödde en bättre bakterieprofil än de avfettade nötterna.[39] Mandelolja stödjer en hälsosam tarmtransit, vilket gör den användbar vid behandling av irritabel tarm (IBS).  
Traditionella användningsområden Mandelolja anses vara fördelaktig för en rad olika tillstånd baserat på traditionell användning, även om det inte finns konsekvent forskning som stöder eller motsäger effektiviteten av dessa användningar. Mandelolja anses vara antiinflammatorisk, immunförstärkande, antihepatotoxisk och kan även minska förekomsten av tjocktarmscancer.[40]  
Användning av bitter mandelolja Bitter mandelolja är giftig att inta, men har historiskt använts för att behandla feber, möjligen eftersom den kan döda germar, virus och svamp. Den har använts som maskmedel för att döda maskar i mag-tarmkanalen.[41] Bitter mandelolja framkallar svettning och urinproduktion. Även om det inte finns några studier på människor är användningen av bitter mandelolja för spasmer, smärta, hosta och klåda erkänd.[42]  

Frågor om mandelolja

Vad ska jag leta efter i en mandelolja? Oren, kallpressad mandelolja innehåller den bästa profilen av näringsämnen och fetter. Den kan vara mörkare i färgen och starkare i doften än en raffinerad olja, men den övergripande doften och smaken bör fortfarande vara ganska mild.  

Om jag är allergisk mot mandel, kan jag använda mandelolja? Om du har nötallergi, eller om du inte är säker på om du har nötallergi, bör mandelolja undvikas, även som ett topikalt medel.  

Är det säkert att använda mandelolja på barn? Om ditt barn har nötallergi, eller om du inte är säker på om ditt barn har nötallergi, bör mandelolja undvikas, även som ett topikalt medel. Det har förekommit fall där barn utvecklat allergier mot mandel baserat endast på topikal exponering.[43] Fråga en läkare om testning för mandelallergier.  

Kan jag laga mat med mandelolja? Du kan laga mat med mandelolja; oljan – eller ett mandelextrakt – kan vara en ingrediens i bakrecept. Mandelolja är inte stabil vid höga temperaturer, så det är inte det bästa valet för matlagning med hög värme.  

Hur lång är hållbarheten för mandelolja? Om den förvaras under rätt förhållanden håller mandelolja i ungefär 2 år. Det höga innehållet av vitamin E i mandelolja skyddar den faktiskt från den oxidativa stress som uppstår när oljan börjar bli härsken, vilket förlänger hållbarheten. Mandelolja har låg fukthalt, med endast cirka 5 procent vatteninnehåll, så länge fukt hålls ute bryts den inte ner lätt. Mandelolja bör förvaras svalt eftersom den bryts ner vid högre temperaturer.[44]  

Kommer mandelolja att täppa till mina porer? Mandel är en bra mjukgörare, vilket betyder att den är bra på att bryta ner och mjuka upp huden. Ändå kan ansiktets porer vara mer känsliga för att täppas till av tjocka oljor. Om du tenderar att ha fet hud kan mandelolja vara bättre att använda på andra delar av kroppen.  

Kommer jag att gå upp i vikt av kalorierna i mandelolja? De flesta studier visar att viktminskning är resultatet av fler mandlar i kosten. Som en näringstät mat kan den hjälpa dig att känna dig mätt snabbare, vilket ersätter livsmedel med högre kolhydratinnehåll som generellt är lägre i näringsämnen.  

Varning och överväganden Mandelolja är gjord av mandlar. Använd inte topiskt eller intag om du är allergisk mot mandlar eller alla trädnötter. Mandlar tillhör en grupp livsmedel som kan orsaka oral allergisyndrom.[45] De andra livsmedlen i denna grupp av björkpollenlivsmedel är äpplen, mandlar, morötter, selleri, körsbär, hasselnötter, kiwi, persikor, päron och plommon. Om du reagerar på något av dessa livsmedel, rådfråga din läkare innan du gör mandelolja till en regelbunden del av din kost eller kosmetiska rutin.
