Teunisbloemolie

Over botanische oliën

Het gebruik van botanische oliën gaat duizenden jaren terug, met wortels in culturen zo divers als de oude Soemeriërs, Chinezen en het Romeinse Rijk.[1]

Botanische oliën worden bereid uit de hele plant, waarbij de geur, de belangrijkste actieve ingrediënten en de essentie van de plant behouden blijven. Botanische oliën gemaakt van verschillende planten zijn door de geschiedenis heen gebruikt om goden te eren,[2] lichamen voorbereiden op begrafenissen,[3] schoonheid behouden, helpen bij hygiëne en een breed scala aan medische aandoeningen behandelen. Instructies voor de bereiding en het gebruik van planten als medicijn zijn vastgelegd in de werken van Dioscorides, De materia medica[4], al in de eerste eeuw.

Moderne technologie heeft het mogelijk gemaakt de actieve delen van planten te identificeren en te bestuderen voor hun rol in de gezondheid en hun bruikbaarheid tegen diverse medische aandoeningen. De waarde van botanische oliën heeft de tand des tijds doorstaan.  

De eigenschappen van teunisbloem

Teunisbloem is een wilde bloem die ongeveer 70.000 jaar geleden in Midden-Amerika en Mexico begon en noordwaarts trok om overal in de Verenigde Staten te groeien, vooral langs rivieroevers en in zanderige grond. Het is een bloeiende plant waarvan de gele bloemen alleen 's avonds opengaan, wat de naam verklaart.[5]

Europese kolonisten brachten de wortel terug naar Engeland en Duitsland, waar het als voedsel werd geconsumeerd, en naar Italië, van waaruit het zich over Europa verspreidde. Het wordt voor het eerst vermeld in botanische literatuur in 1587, en tijdens de 16ede eeuw werd het de “koningsgeneesmiddel” genoemd vanwege de bruikbaarheid bij veel ziekten. De Latijnse naam, Oenothera, betekent “een plant waarvan het sap slaap kan veroorzaken”, wat verwijst naar de kalmerende eigenschappen.[6] Inheemse Amerikanen wreven teunisbloem op hun mocassins om hun geur te maskeren en dichter bij dieren te komen. Men geloofde dat het geluk bracht bij de jacht, mogelijk om deze reden.[7]  

Voedingsstoffen

De hele teunisbloemplant kan als voedsel worden gebruikt. De nootachtige wortel werd gegeten door de inheemse Amerikanen[8] en de Engelsen[9] en de Duitsers noemden het rapunzel[10] en gaven er de voorkeur aan omdat het voedzamer was dan rundvlees.[11] De jonge bladeren kunnen rauw in salades worden gegeten.

De bladeren worden erg bitter, maar kunnen in meerdere keren water gekookt worden om ze smakelijker te maken. De eetbare zaden zijn gebruikt als vervanging voor maanzaad. Uit de zaden wordt de waardevolle teunisbloemolie gewonnen. De zaadolie is het enige deel van de plant dat nog routinematig wordt geconsumeerd, en de essentiële vetzuren zijn de enige voedingsstoffen in de plant die zijn bestudeerd.

De vetzuren van teunisbloem zijn essentiële vetzuren. Essentiële voedingsstoffen zijn die welke het lichaam niet zelf kan aanmaken - ze moeten via de voeding worden verkregen. Linolzuur, het dominante vetzuur in teunisbloemolie, komt ook veel voor in bladgroenten, zaden en noten.[12]

Hoewel omega-3 vetzuren beter bekend staan om hun gezondheidsvoordelen, vereist de voeding en gezondheid van huid en haar een balans tussen omega-6 en omega-3 vetzuren. Het Amerikaanse dieet bevat doorgaans een grote hoeveelheid omega-6, die kan worden omgezet in het ontstekingsbevorderende arachidonzuur, vooral wanneer de bron vlees is. Plantaardige bronnen van omega-6 vetzuren worden omgezet in gamma-linoleenzuur, dat ontstekingsremmend werkt, voordat het arachidonzuur wordt.[13]

Hoewel teunisbloemolie voornamelijk linolzuur bevat, bevat het ook tot 10% gamma-linoleenzuur (GLA).[14] GLA in het lichaam wordt omgezet in dihomo-GLA (DGLA), dat ontstekingsremmend werkt, voordat het arachidonzuur wordt. Deze omzetting vereist voldoende magnesium, zink en de vitamines C, B3 en B6.[15] GLA is overvloedig aanwezig in menselijke moedermelk, waar het lijkt te helpen bij het reguleren van het niveau van IgE, een immunoglobuline dat geassocieerd wordt met allergieën.[16] Behalve moedermelk is GLA schaars in het voedsel, het komt alleen voor in zwarte bes- en bernagiezaad en in spirulina.[17]

Teunisbloemolie bevat ook oliezuur, palmitinezuur en stearinezuur. Deze vetten dragen bij aan de verzachtende eigenschappen van teunisbloemolie, wat het nuttig maakt in cosmetica, maar deze vetten komen in veel planten voor. Evenzo is EPO een bron van plantaardige sterolen, die helpen bij het verlagen van cholesterol, maar die ook in veel andere plantaardige voedingsmiddelen voorkomen. Teunisbloem wordt vooral gewaardeerd om zijn hoge GLA-gehalte.[18]  

Bereiding van teunisbloemolie

Koud geperst

Expellerpersen verwijst naar het proces waarbij teunisbloemzaden langzaam worden gebroken onder mechanische druk, zoals tussen twee roterende metalen platen, om de vetten vrij te maken. Koud persen betekent dat de olie bij een lage temperatuur is geperst met een expeller.

De lage temperatuur voorkomt dat de olie bederft[19] en helpt het de gunstige eigenschappen van de plant te behouden, inclusief plantaardige sterolen.[20] De vluchtigheid van de waardevolle verbindingen die worden geëxtraheerd maakt het een zeer delicaat proces dat binnen een nauw temperatuurbereik moet worden uitgevoerd.[21]

Oplosmiddelextractie

De hoeveelheid olie die uit teunisbloemzaad wordt gewonnen is vrij laag, maar zeer waardevol. De hoeveelheid olie wordt sterk verhoogd door tijdens het extractieproces een oplosmiddel zoals hexaan te gebruiken. Het hexaan wordt vervolgens onder druk bij lage temperaturen verwijderd.

In een poging om het risico op blootstelling aan oplosmiddelen volledig te elimineren, hebben verschillende bedrijven alternatieve methoden onderzocht. Eén daarvan is superkritische vloeistofextractie met kooldioxide. Dit houdt in dat de olie-extractie wordt uitgevoerd onder zorgvuldig gecontroleerde temperatuur- en drukomstandigheden, waarbij kooldioxide wordt gebruikt om de maximale hoeveelheid olie te winnen.[22]

Medicinaal gebruik van teunisbloemolie

Toepassingen in de Ayurvedische en Chinese geneeskunde

Teunisbloemolie wordt in de Ayurvedische geneeskunde, het traditionele geneeskundesysteem van India, beschouwd als verkoelend en voedend, waardoor het nuttig is bij ontstekingsaandoeningen. Het wordt gebruikt bij eczeem, allergieën, auto-immuunziekten en immuundeficiënties.[23]

Zowel de Ayurvedische geneeskunde als de traditionele Chinese geneeskunde erkennen de waarde van teunisbloemolie voor het beheersen van de vrouwelijke voortplantingscycli, en in de Chinese geneeskunde wordt het gebruikt om het bloed te laten stromen en de circulatie te verbeteren.[24]  

Vrouwengezondheid

Teunisbloemolie wordt vooral gezocht als ondersteuning voor de gezondheid van vrouwen, inclusief borstcysten en pijn (ook wel mastalgie genoemd).[25] Het is ook nuttig bij PMS[26], hoge bloeddruk tijdens de zwangerschap, het vergemakkelijken van de bevalling[27] en het beheersen van opvliegers tijdens de menopauze[28]. Er is behoefte aan grotere onderzoeken[29] om het voordeel in behandeling te bevestigen, maar de ontstekingsremmende werking van teunisbloem ondersteunt het traditionele gebruik voor deze aandoeningen.[30]

Eczeem

Sinds de jaren 1930 geloven onderzoekers dat een tekort aan essentiële vetzuren (EFA) of een afwijking in het EFA-metabolisme de oorzaak is van eczeem. Mensen met eczeem hebben veel linolzuur, maar kunnen moeite hebben om dit om te zetten in ontstekingsremmende GLA. Als dat waar is, zou het nuttig zijn om aan te vullen met GLA-rijke teunisbloemolie.[31]

Studies hebben niet consequent voordelen aangetoond, maar het kan een kwestie zijn van het vinden van de juiste dosering.[32] Het kan nuttig zijn bij het beheersen van bijwerkingen van isotretinoïne, een acne-medicijn.[33] Er zijn meer studies nodig om de effectiviteit te bepalen.

Hart- en Vaatgezondheid

Teunisbloemolie is gevonden als hulp bij pijn en verlies van zenuwfunctie geassocieerd met diabetische neuropathie. Resultaten vereisten het innemen van een hoge dosis olie gedurende zes maanden en werkte beter bij mensen met goed gereguleerde bloedsuiker.[34]

Teunisbloem kan ook nuttig zijn bij het beheersen van de bloedsuikerspiegel bij vrouwen met zwangerschapsdiabetes. Meer studies zijn nodig.[35] Omdat het de circulatie bevordert, is er interesse in het vermogen om de symptomen van de ziekte van Raynaud te verbeteren, maar ook hier zijn meer studies nodig.  

Artritis

Essentiële vetzuren zijn bestudeerd op hun vermogen om de pijn van artritis te verlichten. De vetten in teunisbloemolie verhogen direct de hoeveelheid DGLA in het bloed. DGLA is een sterk ontstekingsremmend vet dat pijn zou moeten verminderen en gewrichten beschermen.

Sommige studies zijn veelbelovend, maar er is meer bewijs nodig voordat teunisbloem als eerstelijnsbehandeling voor reumatoïde artritis kan worden aanbevolen.[36]  

Cosmetica

Teunisbloemolie wordt gebruikt in cosmetische producten zoals zepen en lotions. Het wordt goed door de huid opgenomen en verzacht deze door de gunstige oliën af te geven. Topisch wordt het vaak gebruikt in combinatie met een draagolie die de stabiliteit van teunisbloem verbetert.[37]  

Traditioneel Gebruik

Inheemse Amerikanen gebruikten de bladeren van teunisbloem om kompressen te maken voor het genezen van kneuzingen en aambeien. Het werd beschouwd als een remedie tegen reuma, verlamming en jicht. De hele plant, bereid als thee of tinctuur, werd gebruikt als kalmeringsmiddel bij slapeloosheid, rusteloosheid en het kalmeren van de longen bij congesties zoals bronchitis.[38]

Het gebruik ervan bij rusteloosheid heeft waarschijnlijk geleid tot de moderne suggestie dat het nuttig is bij ADHD, maar er is nog niet genoeg onderzoek dat dat effect aantoont. Het is ook gebruikt om het lichaam te helpen herstellen van de effecten van te veel alcohol.[39]  

 

Vragen over teunisbloemolie

Waar moet ik op letten bij teunisbloemolie? De meeste teunisbloemolie wordt verkocht in capsules. GLA is vrij onstabiel en wordt snel ranzig, dus zoek naar producten waaraan een antioxidant, zoals vitamine E, is toegevoegd. Gebruik fabrikanten die je kunt vertrouwen. Er zijn veel voorbeelden van teunisbloemolie die in capsules wordt vervangen door goedkopere soja- of saffloerolie.[40]  

Kan ik allergisch zijn voor teunisbloemolie? Allergieën voor teunisbloem worden zelden gemeld, maar zijn mogelijk. Als je weet dat je allergisch bent voor teunisbloembloemen of voor GLA, gebruik dan geen teunisbloem topisch of intern. Vraag je arts naar een test voor een allergie voor teunisbloem of andere planten uit de familie van de Onagraceae.  

Is het veilig om teunisbloemolie bij kinderen te gebruiken? Teunisbloemolie is onderzocht en veilig bevonden voor kinderen. Het is geen veelvoorkomend allergeen, maar als je kind allergisch is voor teunisbloem of andere planten uit de familie van de Onagraceae, gebruik dan geen teunisbloemolie topisch of intern als voedingssupplement.

Kan ik koken met teunisbloemolie? Je zou teunisbloemolie niet gebruiken om mee te koken. Het is extreem onstabiel bij hitte, maar de plant is eetbaar en voedzaam. Jonge bladeren kunnen aan salades worden toegevoegd en de wortels kunnen gegeten worden. Een draagolie zoals olijfolie kan worden geïnfuseerd met teunisbloembloemen om enkele eigenschappen van de plant vast te leggen. De olie kan dan worden gebruikt zoals je olijfolie zou gebruiken.[41]  

Hoe lang is de houdbaarheid van teunisbloemolie? Zeer kort! Onder de juiste bewaaromstandigheden blijft teunisbloemolie ongeveer zes maanden goed. Vitamine E wordt toegevoegd aan teunisbloemolie om het te beschermen tegen oxidatieve stress die ontstaat wanneer olie begint te bederven, waardoor de houdbaarheid wordt verlengd. Teunisbloemolie moet gekoeld bewaard worden en bij gebruik in bereidingen moet het na elke stap met warmte worden toegevoegd.  

Verstopt teunisbloemolie mijn poriën niet? Teunisbloemolie is een goede verzachtende olie, wat betekent dat het de huid afbreekt en verzacht. Toch kunnen de poriën van het gezicht gevoeliger zijn voor verstopping door dikke oliën. Als je de neiging hebt om een vette huid te hebben, is teunisbloemolie beter te gebruiken op andere delen van het lichaam.  

Voorzichtigheid en overwegingen

Er is enig bewijs dat teunisbloem de activiteit van aanvallen kan verhogen. Gebruik geen teunisbloem, teunisbloemolie of teunisbloem essentiële olie als je epilepsie hebt of gevoelig bent voor aanvallen van welke aard dan ook.

Teunisbloem kan het bloeden verhogen, gebruik het daarom niet als u een bloeding- of stollingsstoornis heeft, bloedverdunnende medicatie gebruikt of een operatie ondergaat. Teunisbloemolie kan maagklachten, misselijkheid, diarree, losse ontlasting of hoofdpijn veroorzaken.
