Whether you’ve lost some or all of your teeth, partial or full dentures are a helpful solution. However, sometimes they can cause pain which isn’t normal. It’s important to talk to your dentist if your dentures hurt.

What Causes Denture Pain?

The problem might be that your dentures don’t fit your mouth properly. If they are too loose, they can move around in your mouth. This can cause irritation all around your mouth, including on your gums. It may even lead to infections.

Making sure you get a good fit is the only way to keep your dentures from hurting you. You should also be vigilant with your oral hygiene. A natural line of products can help keep your mouth healthy which is so important for your gums.

What Can You Do To Prevent Denture Pain?

Aside from visiting your dentist to ensure you get your dentures refitted or adjusted, there are some things you can do to avoid a painful experience while wearing them.

Get The Right Fit

If you’ve been wearing dentures for some time, your gums and bones will become different. It’s not uncommon for denture wearers to find that all it takes to stop the irritation and pain is a visit to the dentist to have them adjusted to the changes in their mouths.

Watch What You Eat

Soft foods are often best, especially when you’re getting used to wearing dentures. Avoid sticky foods and chew everything slowly, using both sides of your mouth at once. This will keep your dentures from moving out of place.

Apply An Adhesive

If your dentures have recently been adjusted to fit properly and they still hurt, try using a small amount of adhesive. This will keep them in place.

Take Them Out Before Going To Sleep

You should always remove your dentures before you go to bed, unless your dentist instructs you to do otherwise.

Be Careful With Them

Dentures can break with ease. A simple slip of the hand could move them suddenly off base and render them ill-fitting or destroy them completely.

Keep Them Clean

It’s important to soak your dentures in denture cleaner overnight. Never use toothpaste or household cleaners on them.

Clean Your Mouth Too

Your teeth might be gone, but your gums still need to be taken care of. Keeping your gums as healthy as possible will lessen the likelihood of pain caused by dentures.

Dentures can be a great solution when you’ve lost teeth if you are unable to get dental implants. They give you the ability to chew normally again and allow you to smile with confidence. Make sure you keep good habits with your oral hygiene and take care of your dentures, and it will be much less likely you’ll find them to be a source of pain.
