Best Ways To Save Your Natural Teeth

Once our natural teeth are damaged or extracted there isn’t a way to undo the damage that has been done. There are ways to protect them though.

Some repairs can be made, or even replaced, with false teeth when necessary, but all of these come with a cost and varying levels of discomfort. These include saving the natural teeth and keeping them in place or replacing a tooth that is beyond repair.

To save your own natural teeth it is important to attend regular dental appointments for both preventative care and early intervention as needed, brush and floss teeth twice a day to remove residue that damages teeth and to keep them clean and protected, and avoid foods that are more likely to damage teeth.

Preventative dental care to save natural teeth

Preventative dental care is key in maintaining the health of your teeth and to increase their lifespan. During preventative care appointments the dental hygienist will use the right tools to remove all plaque, tartar, and other residue from all tooth surfaces, including between teeth and under the gumline where needed.

This also allows the dental hygienist and the dentist to check each tooth for weakening spots in the enamel, signs of wear, and to find any cavities while they are small and less risky for the entire tooth.

By filling small cavities before they become larger, the integrity of the tooth is better maintained and the process is both faster and less uncomfortable, with less pain than a large filling would be.

Flossing and brushing to save natural teeth

Continuing the preventative care at home is important, as you only see your dentist a few times a year, but you are able to protect your teeth each morning and every night. By flossing between and around all the teeth the buildup that causes plaque and then tartar can be removed and cavities can be avoided.

Flossing the teeth first loosens buildup and debris from around the teeth and makes it easier to brush. Brushing should be done twice a day at minimum to remove buildup and prevent cavities by removing the residue that damages enamel as well as reducing the plaque build-up on teeth.

These simple actions can be done in a way to suit your schedule making tooth care viable for everyone.

Food choices to maintain natural teeth

While you are maintaining clean teeth and ensuring all residue is removed and sugar levels are decreased, choosing foods that are beneficial for teeth - milk, cheese, other dairy, proteins - will help provide the nutrients that teeth need. Avoid hard foods such as unshelled nuts and hard candies to help teeth to stay strong and avoid damage longer.

To protect and save your natural teeth it is important to make food choices and dental care that will protect them. By keeping them clean and residue free, and completing the minor repairs as needed, your natural teeth can last several decades.
