Periodontitis Treatments

One of the helpful things about experiencing gum issues is that they usually occur in stages. If you are careful and diligent enough, when you start to see symptoms of gum disease or gingivitis, you can incorporate certain practices to prevent further damage. But in the event that you do develop this serious gum disease, there are a few ways that you can go about getting treatment and improving the status of your mouth and gums.

First, you'll need to change certain behaviors. Those who develop periodontitis don't just develop it by chance or arbitrarily. They develop it because they do not take care of their teeth and gums the way that they should. Dental plaque is the predominant cause of periodontal disease. This means that for those who aren't properly brushing their teeth or flossing, they run the great risk of developing the condition. So the behavioral changes that you'll need to enact will directly target your oral care. You'll need to form better, more helpful oral habits. Things like smoking or skipping brushes just won't be possible anymore.

Next, you'll need to look into removing the tartar from your teeth. Most dentist offices provide this service. It is sometimes referred to as a calculus removal. It's an in depth cleaning where the calcified plaque is removed from the teeth via this specific procedure. It's considered a mechanical cleaning and is more involved than the standard cleaning you likely get once a year from your dentist. Due to the depth of the cleaning, it can be a bit painful at times and sometimes mild pain medication is suggested to help with the discomfort.

The main purpose of any type of treatment for periodontitis is to be able to control the infection. This can be effectively done with the deep cleaning and with behavioral changes. But sometimes, depending on the level of severity with some cases, additional measures have to be taken. While we don't like to advocate the use of prescription medications, some dentists do find it helpful depending on the level of severity of the case. Things like prescription mouth rinses may prove to be very helpful. Those often contain chlorhexidine, which is an antimicrobial that helps to eliminate the hardened tartar, as well as the bacteria that lives actively in our mouths.

Natural Treatments

There are also natural treatments that we can suggest during the aftermath and the recovery of dealing with periodontitis. You can attempt to incorporate a few different oral health hacks into your daily mouth care regimen. The first is oil pulling. Use a tablespoon of coconut oil as a mouth rinse. This helps to kill the harmful bacteria that lives and roams freely in your mouth, even after you've thoroughly brushed your teeth. The next is a salt water gargle. This also helps eliminate the bacteria that easily populates in the cracks and crevices of your mouth. Take care of your teeth and your gums. If you have the misfortune of experiencing periodontitis in your life, take the necessary precautions to ensure it only happens once.
