As COVID is still prevalent around the world many places are continuing mask requirements and causing some changes to daily lives. One of those changes is the increased number of people noticing they are developing bad breath while wearing their mask. This occurs for a few reasons, and there are steps that can be taken to decrease this problem.
Water consumption and bad breath
Bad breath that occurs with mask wearing can be attributed to two main factors. One is that with a mask people are simply more aware of their own breath and it may not have changed from pre-mask.
Another factor is the reduced amount of water that is being consumed as masks cannot be removed in some settings limiting the times and places that water can be consumed. To combat these, here are some simple steps you can follow.
Brushing, flossing and bad breath
To improve bad breath brush and floss teeth twice daily. It is important to remove all food particles and debris as they are often the cause of bad breath. Mouthwash is also beneficial in boosting fresh breath and helping it stay fresh longer, whether it is a liquid mouthwash or a breath-freshening gum or strip that can be used periodically throughout the day.
Dry mouth and bad breath
Dry mouth is frequently caused by not drinking enough water throughout the day. Once the mouth becomes dry it is unable to rinse away buildup and debris from food. To combat this it is important to take water breaks throughout the day. Setting a reminder can be helpful.
The average adult needs two to three liters of water every day and using a set water bottle or water cup with straw can help to track the amount of water.
It is still important to attend regular dental appointments to ensure any dental concerns are cared for and that your teeth are remaining healthy even while wearing a mask. By consuming foods that are mild in odor, brushing and flossing after each meal, and increasing the water intake, bad breath can be banished for good even under your COVID mask.
