Didn’t sleep well last night? It’s written all over your face, especially around your eyes. Those dark, puffy circles under your eyes are the telltale sign of fatigue and can make you look years older than the number listed on your driver’s license.
They’re more common as we age, though you can get them no matter how old you are, especially if you’re prone to burning the candle at both ends. Lack of sleep will bring them on in a heartbeat, trapping fluid buildup underneath your eyes for that puffy, darkened appearance.
Age, eye strain, allergies, dehydration, overexposure to the sun, and genetics can also play a role in whether or not you wake up with eyes that look like they belong to a racoon. The good news is that you can do something about them. Keep reading to find out what!
Ways To Get Rid Of Dark Circles
If you want to get rid of those dark circles, you should find out what’s causing them in the first place. In most cases, the following tips will help you clear them up.
Apply A Cold Compress
As with any instance of swelling, a cold compress can be most effective with dark circles. It will shrink those dilated blood vessels and make puffiness disappear.
Go To Bed Earlier
If you keep waking up like this, it’s your body’s way of telling you that you need more sleep. Start by turning in for the night earlier. Take a power nap if you can when you have nights that you toss and turn. Getting good sleep will most likely prevent dark circles and puffiness from occurring.
Add More Pillows
When you sleep, try elevating your head with an extra pillow or two. By doing this, you can prevent fluids from getting trapped under your eyes and alleviate any swelling.
Treat Your Eyes To Tea
Cold tea bags are a great way to help liven up the eyes. Because they contain antioxidants and caffeine, they boost blood circulation while shrinking your blood vessels. They also reduce the pooling of fluids under your eyes. They feel amazing when you put them in the fridge and apply them to your eyes.
Cut A Cucumber
Cucumber also has a soothing effect for tired eyes with dark circles. Simply cut off two circular slices, lay back, and relax with them on top of your closed eyes.
There are medical treatments you can try out if the problem seems to go beyond a lack of quality sleep. It’s best to speak to your doctor first to determine what the root cause of your darkened eyes could be. Medical treatments include chemical peels, laser surgery, and fillers, for example.
Until you know what’s causing them, you can always dab a bit of concealer on your dark circles and move through your day. When you get home, take the time to unwind and relieve your eyes, get that good sleep, and you might just find the next morning to be free of dark, puffy circles!
