Problems with acne can strip away your confidence. A dermatologist can help set you on the path to clearer skin, but it’s up to you to make some changes that will help get the results you desire. Acne occurs when your pores get clogged with excess oil from your skin and dead skin cells. That’s why it’s important to get to the source of the problem as well as clear existing acne for better skin.

It’s most common for teens, but adults can get acne too. The American Academy of Dermatology has some simple tips for people of all ages to clear and smooth their skin, though it recommends you try each acne treatment for at least one month before trying something else in order to get your best results.

Get To The Source

As mentioned, acne is caused by clogged pores. So clearing your pores is key to keeping your skin clear. A cleanser that gently exfoliates while hydrating your skin is best for ridding your skin of irritating acne. The exfoliation ensures you sweep away those dead skin cells which will keep it from getting deep into your pores.

Use The Right Skin Oils

It might seem counterintuitive to slather oil on acne-prone skin, but one thing most people that suffer from acne don’t realize is that dried out skin makes breakouts worse. Natural oils deliver essential botanicals that nourish skin without clogging pores, leaving behind clearer, more beautiful skin.

Don’t Scrub

While exfoliation is important to help remove dead skin cells and keep them from getting into your pores, scrubbing your face off is not the answer. Be gentle or else you’ll irritate it and make your acne worse.

Hands Off

Touching your face too much can only make things worse. The dirt and oil from your hands gets into your pores, making for more acne. Don’t pop your pimples either. It will just cause scarring which is even harder to get rid of.

Keep Your Sheets Clean

If you looked at your pillowcases under a microscope, you’d be disgusted by the dead skin cells, bacteria, and debris left on there. Change your pillow cases three times a week to help prevent irritating your acne-prone skin.

Follow these tips as well as the plan your dermatologist sets for you. If you can’t make it to the dermatologist, look for skincare products that are designed for acne-prone skin. Labels that say “non-comedogenic” on it are best for keeping from clogging pores.

Don’t sit back and let acne take over your life. Take control of your skincare and love your skin!
