For most people, changing your toothbrush is not a priority. Many people go months without changing their toothbrush without even thinking about it. However, it is important that you change your toothbrush or toothbrush head regularly in order to prevent the spread of bacteria.

A toothbrush is no longer good if you have had it for too long or the bristles have begun to fray. When you use an old or worn out toothbrush, you are not maximizing your oral care and your hygiene can pay the price.

How Often Should You Change Your Toothbrush?

Many people don’t change their toothbrush because they don’t know how often they should. Dental professionals state that you should change your toothbrush or swap out your toothbrush head at least every three months or even sooner.

If you begin to see the bristles of your toothbrush fray at the ends, you should definitely get a new toothbrush. Once the toothbrush bristles are frayed or worn out, they won’t work as well anymore. When a toothbrush is worn down, it won’t remove the plaque like a new toothbrush would. This way, you can ensure that your teeth stay happy and healthy.

You should also change your toothbrush after any sickness or illness. Even though you may wash your toothbrush after brushing, bits of bacteria can still be present. Because of this, you can risk getting sick again or contracting a disease from the bacteria that hides in your bristles.

How To Maximize The Life Of Your Toothbrush

If you want to make sure that your toothbrush lasts the entirety of those three to four months, there are certain things that you can do to make it last longer. You can follow some simple hygienic steps to ensure that your oral care is done well and your teeth stay shiny and healthy for a long time with a well-working toothbrush.

Below are some of the best ways to maximize the life of your toothbrush so that you don’t have to replace it as much:

  • Rinse your toothbrush under cold water vigorously to get all of the toothpaste and bacteria out.
  • Store your toothbrush in an upright position so that it can dry properly before you use it again.
  • Put it in a plastic case when you are traveling so that the bristles don’t fray and it doesn’t contract germs from anything else.
  • Never share your toothbrush under any circumstances.

Overall, it is not safe nor is it sanitary to keep the same toothbrush for an extended period of time. When you do, you run the risk of your toothbrush not working as effectively or bacteria building up in the bristles.

Whenever you have had your toothbrush for over three months or your bristles begin to look worn out, it is time for you to replace either your toothbrush or your toothbrush head. Don’t use a worn-out toothbrush, it is not worth it.
