Options For Cavities Where Fillings Have Failed

Your dentist may have recently told you that you have a filling in need of replacement. It’s important to realize that fillings don’t always last forever. In fact, it’s pretty standard for fillings to only last around 10 or 15 years before requiring replacement. Everyday wear and tear can wear out a filling so that it needs to be replaced.

You may be given a few different options by your dentist for methods of fixing a filling or a cavity. The following are a few options for dealing with fillings and filling replacements.

New Fillings

In the past, the standard method for dealing with a failing filling that required replacement would be to put a new filling in place. These days, there are increasingly more materials available to use for dental fillings. There may be some material options available today that weren’t available when you got your original cavity. Some of the materials to consider are amalgam, composite, and glass ionomers.

Remineralization

Remineralization is more a preventative measure when it comes to cavities. However, it can help with some minor tooth decay. Dentists are working on using remineralization as a way to completely correct fillings of all sizes, so hopefully this will be an option that is available to correct all types of filling failure in the future.

Dental Implants

If tooth decay is extensive, patients might want to consider dental implants. This method of replacing a problem filling is ideal because dental implants last for such a long time. Implants can last as long as 25 years. Another advantage of implants is that they so closely resemble the appearance and functionality of real teeth.

Crowns

Crowns are frequently used to fix cavity and filling issues when decay in the affected tooth is extensive. Crowns are especially good when the tooth’s appearance has become negatively impacted by the decay. They can help to restore a tooth’s appearance when it is showing discoloration or is misshapen.

Bridges

Bridges are typically used to correct tooth decay issues when a tooth is completely missing. They are a tooth replacement option, but they do not typically last as long as dental implants.

Discuss each of the above-mentioned options with your dentist when your filling needs to be replaced. Your dentist should provide you with his or her advice on what the best option is for your particular needs.
