Being in isolation for more than a year isn't easy. There's nothing normal about needing to be in isolation for an extended period of time. This pandemic has definitely taken a toll on millions of people around the globe.
As public officials work to stop the spread of the virus, it's also important for you to be mindful of your own mental health during this time of quarantine. If you're currently suffering from depression, don't take it lightly. In fact, consider the following steps in order to deal with your depression right now.
Give Yourself Grace
When you're dealing with depression, it can be an extremely debilitating experience. Don't be surprised if there are days when you just don't want to get out of bed. Don't be surprised if days pass and you realize you haven't taken a shower. Don't look at your schedule or routine and use it as a barometer of your success.
When you're depressed, you have to give yourself grace. You're fighting through a mental battle. Do your best to not pick yourself apart. Be gentle with yourself, and know that it's a journey that you have to walk through each day.
Develop a Realistic Routine
It's helpful to create a routine, however, make that routine realistic. Don't try to save the world within a day. Instead, give yourself a small list that’s realistic for you, your resources, and your energy levels. Consider the activities you need to get done. Prioritize those activities.
Whatever doesn't get done can wait. Do not overwhelm yourself with a long list of chores as this will only worsen your depression by the end of the day. If you're able to get through three things, you've accomplished so much. Remember to root for yourself as much as you can.
See an Excellent Therapist
Therapy can be a game-changer when you're dealing with depression or any other mental illness. This is because you have a professional who's dedicated to helping you get through your journey. The professional can also give you the tools you need in order to practically walk through depression. If they find that it is serious enough, they can prescribe medication as well.
Sometimes you need the ear of a person who’s professionally equipped to provide healing and resources. If you’re struggling with depression to the point where you cannot properly function day-to-day, you may need to find an online psychiatrist in Texas.
Psychiatrists are able to offer medication and advice for coping with clinical depression. You may try speaking to a therapist before asking a psychiatrist for a medication-focused approach to dealing with depression.
Get Outside Daily
There's something really powerful about nature. Even just getting outside for fresh air can do so much for your mood. Whether you wake up early in the morning or take a break in the middle of the day, try your best to get some vitamin D and fresh air on a daily basis.
You can go for a walk. Enjoy the view as you go for a bike ride. Do some yoga in the park. Go for a jog. Just do your best to get outside. If you really want to up the ante, exercise at the same time. When you're able to release endorphins, this can help you improve your mood.
Connect with People Who Energize You
One of the main reasons why isolation and quarantine are so difficult for many people is because they miss the ability to connect with people they love. If you've been feeling extremely lonely, isolation will make depression feel worse.
Whether you talk to a friend on the phone, meet up with a family member for a socially distant dinner date, or connect with friends on a Zoom call, try your best to engage with people on a regular basis.
It's also important to engage with people who energize you. People you feel comfortable around can potentially help you to manage your depressive symptoms.
Depression isn't an illness that you can heal within a matter of days. For many people, depression is an illness that they've learned to live with and manage. However, it doesn't have to stay with you forever. By using the right tools and getting help, you can do more than just cope with your symptoms. You can learn to use these tools in order to thrive.
