Skin is the largest organ in the body and due to its exposure to the elements and environment around us it is very susceptible to injuries and small wounds, and needs to be cared for just as the rest of the body does.

Skin should be kept clean, hydrated, and supplied with all the vitamins and nutrients essential to its health. This is accomplished not only through what we choose to eat and drink but also what we apply to the skin.

Pollutants and wound healing

Skin loves clean, fresh air, and will be its healthiest when it is in a healthy environment. This includes the need to protect it from elements that may be damaging by wearing extra layers in the winter to fend off frost bite, and sunscreen in the summer to protect from the sun’s UV rays.

When there are wounds present it becomes even more important to protect an open wound from dirt and pollutants with a covering. Often gauze is used for larger injuries and Band-Aids for smaller to allow the wound to be open to the air between changing. This must be done in a clean environment where pollutants are limited to keep the access of pollutants minimal.

Moisturization and wound healing

It is important to keep skin moisturized, both when it is healthy and when it has a wound of some kind. Skin that is hydrated and healthy will heal much faster and will have better access to vitamins and nutrients needed to heal.

Skin gets its moisture from two main sources: the water within the body and through the moisture that is absorbed through the skin either by being in water or though moisturizers.

Many moisturizing products create a protective layer across the skin that keeps the moisture that is already present in the skin, rather then adding any hydration themselves. This is key to helping with wound healing and maintaining healthy skin because without moisture the skin cannot grow or repair itself.

Nutrients and wound healing

To keep skin healthy and happy it needs nutrients and vitamins that are included within the foods we eat. They can be supplemented when necessary, but the skin also needs access to oxygen and clean air, coverage to protect it from damaging environmental concerns, and hydration to carry the nutrients to the places they are needed most as well as to feed the cells itself.

Providing additional vitamin A and E especially can assist in growing new, healthy skin cells to replace the damaged ones and speed healing and repair. Healthy skin will heal faster and better than skin that is already dry or damaged.
