Cosmetics For Confidence

Despite their reputation, cosmetics are for anyone no matter their age, gender or occupation. Long denigrated as vain or deceitful, cosmetics are no more vain or deceitful than wearing a nice outfit. It's a quick and harmless way to boost your confidence if you feel like it.

If you're toying with the idea but you don't know where to start, here are a few tips for using cosmetics as a quick self-esteem booster.

Health and Wellness with cosmetics

The first priority is health and wellness. Cosmetics that don't take care of your skin are only going to make your insecurities worse.

On the other hand, if you set up a healthy skincare regimen, you may find that many of your concerns are taken care of without ever needing to apply cosmetics at all. So wash your face to help with acne and other skin problems, moisturize and use sunscreen to reduce wrinkles and apply a medicated lip balm to keep your lips smooth and lush.

Color Correcting with cosmetics

Once you've got your skincare regimen down, you can think about color correcting and covering blemishes. First of all, you should know that hiding blemishes with makeup may actually make them worse, so do research and be careful about what you're putting on your skin. However, if you've got dark circles under your eyes or redness on your face, there are plenty of ways to correct that discoloration.

Foundation with cosmetics

Color corrector - and ideally primer - all goes on before your foundation. Foundation and primer is like preparing a canvas. Is it necessary? Technically no, but you absolutely will get better results if you do use primer and foundation.

Make sure to match your skin tone and don't apply too much foundation. A heavy layer of foundation will often end up looking worse than no foundation at all.

Framing with cosmetics

With your canvas prepared, the next step is to frame your face. Pretty much every basic makeup routine focuses on three things: brows, lashes and lips. Eyebrows are easy to overdo or ignore, but neatly done brows create an upper line for your face, giving it a little structure and a lot of personality.

Accenting your eyelashes with a little mascara draws attention to your eyes and lipstick or gloss does for the bottom of your face what your eyebrows do for the top. These three basics create a frame for the rest of your look, highlighting three of your most prominent facial features.

Facial Features with cosmetics

That said, features go well beyond the basics. So far, you've spent a lot of time thinking about the things you want to hide or de-emphasize. If you really want to boost your confidence, you need to turn your attention to the features you want to highlight and emphasize.

Maybe you have amazing eyes, or cheekbones that could cut glass. A little contrasting eyeshadow or eyeliner will make those eyes pop, and just a touch of blush, highlighter or shadow will make your cheekbones stand out even more. This is where you can really boost your self esteem; drawing the eye - including your own - to those features you like best will make you a magnet for compliments and confidence.

Signature look with cosmetics

Cosmetics themselves can be a feature all their own. Whether it's a signature eyeshadow look or color of lipstick, you can make a declaration about your identity using cosmetics. If a heavy makeup look isn't for you, then an au naturel look might be more what you're looking for.

Maybe your signature look is your own glowing complexion, which needs nothing more than a little TLC in the morning. That can be just as much a part of your signature as a style, a color palate, or even a scent.

More than anything else, cosmetics are fun, as thousands of children with tubes of lipstick will tell you. It's a fun way to express yourself, to play around and show off. There's no harm in it, and there's nothing shameful about it. If you want to play, then play!
