Are You A Woman Worried About Hair Loss? Here Are 4 Tips For Treatment
Written By Lizzie Weakley / Reviewed By Ray Spotts
A surprising percentage of women discover their hair is starting to thin by age 40, and many experience the problem even earlier. By middle age, a majority find that their hair is thinner and more brittle, leading to hair loss that can diminish confidence and a healthy appearance.
There are things that women can do to minimize or control the problem of excessive hair loss, including the following.
Protective Hair Treatment
Dermatologists and hair care experts recommend using hair products that are mild and don't damage your hair. Avoid shampoos that contain sulfates, for example, and look for those with natural ingredients instead of harsh chemicals.
Try to limit your use of hair styling products, such as mousse, spray, dyes, and straighteners along with frequent use of hot rollers or blow drying. All of these techniques can take a toll on your hair, especially in midlife.
Nutrition and Vitamins for hair loss treatment
Certain foods contain vitamins, minerals, and other elements that help to promote healthy hair and regrowth as you begin losing hair. Some people are more prone to hair loss if male pattern baldness runs in the family, but any woman may find that thinning hair can benefit from eating a balanced diet with foods like eggs and other proteins as well as bananas along with other foods that contain biotin, which is known to contribute to healthy hair.
Drink adequate amounts of water and avoid stress-inducing foods like sugar. Your doctor may prescribe a vitamin supplement to help you maintain overall good health.
Hair Products for hair loss treatment
Biotin can also be found in special shampoos, conditioners, and scalp treatments to help protect your hair so that it grows stronger and does not fall out as easily. Nutritional supplements and over-the-counter hair regrowth products may be useful in keeping hair healthy although some loss might still be noted.
Prescription Medications for hair loss treatment
For serious cases of female hair loss, a doctor might be willing to recommend a higher-grade treatment regimen by prescribing women's supplements for hair loss. Products like Rogaine and Propecia are now more widely available and might not require a medical prescription.
However, read the directions and warnings to see whether you are a good candidate for this type of treatment based on your specific type of hair loss. These products do not treat every kind of balding area of the scalp.
Treat your hair gently and use safe, healthy products to keep it growing strong. Ask your doctor or a pharmacist to recommend safe, effective products that can help.
