Swollen Gums – What To Do
The first thing that anyone will notice about you is your smile, so you want to make sure that you have a happy and healthy one. If you are suffering from swollen gums, you are not only in constant discomfort and pain, but it is also visible to those around you. Because of this, it is important that you find the cause of your swollen gums so that you can take care of them to have a healthy and happy smile once again.
Causes Of Swollen Gums
Below are some of the primary causes of swollen gums:
- Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the most common cause of swollen gums due to the fact that this gum disease causes your gums to become irritated. While gingivitis may start out mild, it will gradually get more and more severe, making your gums more swollen as it grows worse.
- Pregnancy
Swollen gums can also occur during pregnancy because the hormones will increase the amount of blood rushing to your gums. This can easily lead to your gums being irritated and swollen.
- Malnutrition
Another common cause of swollen gums is vitamin deficiency. If you do not have a diet that has high intakes of vitamins B and C, you can suffer the consequences orally.
- Infection
Finally, you can get swollen gums if you have an infection caused by fungi or viruses. Some other infections that can lead to swollen gums include herpes and thrush, which is a result of yeast growing in the mouth.
Treatments For Swollen Gums
Once you know the cause of your swollen gums, you can begin treating them. Below are some of the treatments, whether they are medical or home remedies, that you can use to reduce the swelling in your gums:
- Medical Treatments
If your swollen gums persist over a long duration of time, it is recommended that you speak to a dentist so that they can take X-rays and determine whether or not you need medical treatment.
- Brushing And Flossing
Sometimes getting rid of your swollen gums is as simple as lightly brushing and flossing to ensure that there is nothing built up around your gums or between your teeth. Don’t be too extreme with your brushing, however.
- Saltwater Solutions
One of the best ways to help clean and clear your mouth is through using saltwater rinses. All that you need is some warm water with sea salt to swish around your mouth for 30 seconds every day.
Overall, if you are suffering from swollen gums and want to get rid of them, it is important to recognize what is causing the swelling in the first place. Once you know what is causing your gums to be swollen, you can decide what route you want to take to get rid of the swelling. If your swelling is extreme, you may want to seek medical advice. If it is mild, you can try some at-home remedies to see if they make any difference.
