Oral Care For Teens: Keeping Smiles Bright In The Rebellious Years
When your kids are little, brushing with them is fun. They want to copy you and hence, getting them to brush is easier. But when they become teens, the same tactics don’t work. You don’t want expensive dental bills, nor do you want to see them lose a healthy smile early on in life.
So how do you get your teens to care for their teeth without coming across as Captain Bringdown? Here are some helpful oral care tips for teens.
Choose Relevant Products
Once there were only dental care products for little ones and adults. Now, there’s a whole segment of the market with appealing packages and styles that teens relate to. Please don’t bring home anything with the Paw Patrol or Barbie on it for your teen or you’ll kick that rebellion into full force.
Use Technology
Teens are big on tech which means anything in this sector can help. Timers to make sure they brush long enough can make it a better experience. Plus, gadgets that make dental care easier and more efficient might be right up their alley too. Things like oral irrigation and shower flossers make short work of proper oral care, work that most teens won’t mind doing.
Keep Soda And Sweets Consumption To A Minimum
You only get to be a teen once and those moments of sodas and sugary snacks are all part of the fun. But if you teach your teens limits on consuming these items, you’ll not only make sure their oral hygiene is on point but you’ll also ensure their overall health for years to come. Save the sweet stuff for special occasions and keep more of the right stuff around the house within easy access so your teens will choose carrot sticks and apple slices over chips and candy bars.
Appeal To Their Image
Lastly, one of the most important things we can’t forget about teens is how image is everything to them. Remember when you were a teen and a zit was the end of the world? Teens are always focused on how they look, especially to others. There’s no need to taunt them, but a gentle reminder about how poor dental care could leave teeth stained yellow or create breath so bad that no one will want to kiss them might be all that’s needed to nudge them in the right direction for proper oral hygiene.
Short of pinning them down and brushing their teeth yourself, all you can do is help give them the right tools for the job and be a positive motivator. You can also enlist the help of your family dentist during the next visit. Sometimes teens listen better when a doctor tells them what they must do for their health.
