General Tooth Care – How To Take Care Of Your Teeth
Written By Kassandra Foreman / Reviewed By Ray Spotts
Caring for teeth is not just important for dental health but also for overall health. While some illness and disease may contribute to dental concerns, it is also true that poor dental health can contribute to or cause illness and disease.
General dental care begins with a routine of brushing and flossing, choosing the right foods and avoiding the wrong ones, and following up with regular appointments with the dentist for treatment and repairs as needed.
Brushing And Flossing Tooth Care
Brushing your teeth is the foundation of tooth care. It starts with finding the right toothbrush, be it manual or powered, that is shaped to fit the mouth and reach all the teeth. Brushing should take two minutes and all teeth and reachable surfaces should be brushed.
You should also floss between and around each tooth down to the gums to remove debris from near the gums and between teeth to reduce decay and deterioration. There are several choices for floss available, and it is worth the time to try a few and find the one that works the best for you - waxed or unwaxed, flavoured, and even some that are different shapes and thicknesses.
It’s also important to select a good mouthwash.
Avoiding Certain Foods For Tooth Care
When brushing you will notice that some foods will stain and stick to the teeth more and some leave increased food particles. Avoiding sticky candy, such as fruit rolls and gummies, will help teeth as they are harder to get off the teeth, and will leave higher amounts of sugar on and around the teeth.
Beverages such as red wine and coffee will stain teeth, as well as tobacco products. Avoiding these foods will help to keep teeth whiter longer and protect the enamel. Foods high in sugar will deteriorate teeth and their enamel faster then foods that are low in sugar, and the same applies to foods and beverages that are more acidic.
Acidic foods include soda pop, citrus fruits - which should be consumed for their other benefits, but rinsed off the teeth or brushed after consumption - some coffees and teas, and some other fruits and candies. These foods should be consumed with water to reduce the contact time of the acidic food or beverage on the teeth.
Visit Dentist Regularly For Tooth Care
The next step in taking care of teeth is regular appointments with the dentist. These include exams, cleanings, and any treatments that are required. Having regular cleanings and exams will allow any problems to be discovered and repaired early, and help keep residue and buildup off the teeth as much as possible.
Follow-up appointments for fillings, root canals, or even extractions should be attended promptly so that any damages can be repaired quickly, limiting the spread and increased concerns.
Your teeth are important to your health and it is important to take care of them every day. By building a daily routine that includes brushing and flossing, adding regular dentist appointments, and eating the right foods, your teeth can last you a lifetime.
