Dental Health Care Tips For Seniors
Written By Grace Wilson / Reviewed By Ray Spotts
We all know that oral health is important, but when it comes to seniors it is even more important than you think. No matter if you are someone who has pristine oral health habits and you have the best and most proactive oral cleaning routine you still need to ensure that you are visiting the dentist on a regular basis. If you are in between appointments here are some of the best dental healthcare tips.
Brush and Floss Regularly
First and foremost, something that almost everybody knows that they need to do is floss and brush their teeth regularly. But even though everybody knows that you should do that at least twice a day, not a lot of people actually do it regularly.
You have to make sure that you are brushing your teeth for two minutes, clean them properly and after that floss. An electric toothbrush can help, especially if you are a senior, to ensure that you are reaching all spots.
Avoid Tobacco
If you are a smoker, you are aware that staying away from smoking will decrease the risk of developing dental issues as well as oral cancer. When you are consuming tobacco, it will make your teeth yellow. After years of consumption, it will lead to gum diseases as well as tooth decay.
Increase Oral Hydration
A lot of people don't know how to deal with a dry mouth. If you simply can't stop using the medication that is drying out your mouth you need to ensure that you always have water on hand as well as some sugar-free gum. Another thing that you must avoid is alcohol because it will cause more dehydration and make things worse.
Use an Antibacterial Mouthwash
Along with flossing and brushing your teeth regularly, you will need to make sure that you are using an antibacterial mouthwash to ensure that you are killing all the bacteria in your mouth. It will also help reduce the plaque from building up in your mouth.
Keep Dental Work Well Maintained
When you are older you likely had some work done in the past you have to make sure that you are taking care of it properly so it lasts as long as possible. That is why you need to ensure that you are regularly visiting the best dental laboratory to maintain and monitor your previously done dental work.
Aside from that, you have to make sure that you are taking care of everything on your own so you don't have to go in before your annual appointments.
Schedule Regular Dental Exams
A lot of people ignore the fact that you need to visit the dentist every six months or even more frequently if you are experiencing a dental issue. Having a routine of visiting a dentist will help you prevent larger issues from occurring.
Limit Sweet and Starchy Food and Drinks
It is not that well known that starchy foods will worsen your teeth along with the sweet ones, but they will erode your teeth as well. Starchy food will cling to your teeth and form plaque which will result in bacteria building up and rotting your teeth. This is only one of the reasons why you should avoid eating processed and sweet foods.
Have A Well-Balanced Diet
Not a lot of people think about how their diet will affect their teeth, especially older people. Having a healthy and well-balanced diet will not only make you feel better but it will also keep your teeth in pristine condition. You have to ensure that you are consuming enough fermented food to keep the bacteria in your mouth balanced as well as foods that will provide you with a balanced diet.
When you are a senior, keeping up with your oral health is just as important as staying healthy and taking your medications on time. But you have to keep in mind that even if you are practicing good oral health you have to ensure that you are going to your annual checkups to keep your teeth in perfect shape.
Choose a dentist that will take care of you properly and ensure that you get regular checkups and keep track of your dental procedures.
