The Importance Of Eye Health During Spring And Summer

Fri, Apr 15, 22 . Admin Editor

Many people think that the spring and summer months are a huge relief to our bodies since the weather is not as cold and dry. There are certain truths to that statement, however, it is important to practice self-care, especially eye care no matter what season it is.

Our bodies react to different seasons in different ways. While cold weather can cause issues such as dry eyes and light sensitivity, some ailments will only occur in warmer weather. Increased pollen levels, more exposure to direct sunlight, dehydration, and cleanliness can all have a huge impact on the health of your eyes and your overall being.

Allergies

Allergies are one of the most common forms of irritation to our eyes as the weather begins to warm up again. Pollen can cause extreme irritation to our sinuses, and our eyes can suffer in the process. The environment and its changes can strongly affect how our body feels throughout the day.

During spring and summer, your eyes may feel itchier and you may even experience blurrier vision due to the allergens floating throughout the air. These symptoms are not only annoying, but they can also be dangerous if you are driving or operating machinery.

Luckily, there are many over-the-counter remedies available to help combat seasonal allergies. However, if you do feel that your symptoms are not improving - or worsening after taking the medicine - you should set up an appointment to talk with your doctor.

Exposure to Sunlight

One of the most important ways to protect your eyes during spring and summer is to shield them from the sun. The bright rays produced can be much more damaging to your eyes than you are aware of, especially if you are not actively covering them.

One of the best and most accessible solutions is to purchase protective sunglasses to shield your eyes from damaging light. Not only will you be elevating your outfit with a new pair of shades, but you will also be helping your eyes out enormously by protecting yourself from the harmful UV rays.

If you find that glare really bothers you when you are outdoors, polarized lenses for your sunglasses may be beneficial due to the technology within the lens that will eliminate that specific form of light. Or if you normally wear glasses, you can even get your sunglasses to have the same prescription for an easy protection method.

Hydration

Although the summer months may not be as dry as the winter season, it is still just as important to keep your eyes hydrated and happy. The warmer months can make you more susceptible to dryness depending on what the climate is like where you live.

Having hydrating eye drops in your purse or work bag can make a huge difference when it comes to treating dry eyes. If you are someone who normally wears contact lenses, these symptoms may be even more irritating to your eyes since dryness while wearing contacts can cause your eyes to feel gritty and uncomfortable.

If you find yourself struggling with them, try changing your brand/line of contacts or check out different contact solutions with moistening features to keep your eyes happy and hydrated throughout the day.

Cleanliness

At the end of the day, our eyes experience a lot of use. Especially during the warm weathered months, we expose our eyes to more dirt due to many being outdoors for much longer periods of time.

Although it is hard to control when you are outdoors, there are many in-home solutions to give yourself and your home clarity. One of the easiest ways to assure that the air in your home is clean is by investing in an air purifier.

Air purifiers help to reduce dirt and other particles in the air that can irritate your lungs, eyes, and skin. There are even many eco-friendly options available to help give you peace of mind with your new device. These machines are also pet and child friendly, so your whole family can feel the wonderful effects.

While keeping your eye health at the forefront all year round is important, it is especially so when the seasons are changing. Keep these four areas in mind when you’re looking to be proactive about the health of your eyes.
