Apart from the office, we’re going to hazard a guess that you spend the bulk of your time at home. If you don’t know what spring cleaning is or just haven’t done it in a while, then our next guess is that your home is tingling with particles diminishing your overall health.

Spring cleaning is a decluttering and deeper clean of your home to re-invigorate your residence and ensure it remains a safe and hygienic place for you and your family. It’s an act of self-care especially when you contemplate the health benefits it has to offer. “What health benefits,” you ask? Well, read on friend!

Spring cleaning boosts your immune system

Noticing that you’re sneezing a lot more at home? It may not only be pollen from outside responsible for these fits. The problem may be occurring internally. Your allergies may be triggered by build-ups of dust, mould, mildew, pet dander and even bugs. This is exacerbated by all the clutter you’ve gathered over time. And you know where we’re going with this - the best way to reduce this build-up of these immune system threats in your home is to clean. And clean well.

Regular vacuuming, dusting, wiping and cleaning your home usually only reaches common and more accessible areas. While this is fine for day-to-day living, it neglects overlooked areas such as within your cupboards or in corners blocked by boxes or furniture.

A spring clean tackles these spawning areas and ensures your home is fresh throughout. If you’re planning to do this yourself and have allergies, we recommend wearing a mask so you don’t spiral into a sneezing and congestion convulsion. These spots are going to be dusty and looming with allergens but cleaning them has a huge pay-off.

Decluttering reduces stress and improves your productivity

It’s that feeling of accomplishment through physical movement. A rewarding surge that unfortunately comes after the task. Like going to the gym, house cleaning can be daunting at the best of times. The trick to getting started is the same. One little step as a catalyst. To drag your body to the gym, it may be putting your socks on. For home cleaning, it’s grabbing some garbage bags.

Did we mention that studies have linked clutter to triggering a release in cortisol? No, well that’s contributing to your anxiety and ruining your naps on rainy days. Clear those mental cobwebs so you can look forward to releasing at home.

In addition to our practical tip of grabbing garbage bags first, a helpful question to ask yourself is if you’ve used an item in the last year. If not then it’s time to sell, donate or discard it.

Your sleep will improve

This is a function of the prior decluttering and removing of allergens from before. Once you’ve cleared out your bedroom, change those sheets. You’re going to sleep like a baby, especially after the effort you’ve put in and the refresh you’ve given to your bedroom. Meanwhile cleaner air means easier breathing.

Jumpstart your mood and mindset

We mentioned the boost in productivity earlier. What you’ll also realize, coming out of the other end of a spring clean, is that it was relatively easier than anticipated. Once you break it down into bite-sized tasks, what seemed like a 12-episode journey to slay a dragon was more a light-hearted mini-series on progress.

This makes regular cleaning seem even more simple and achievable. This is the perfect time to make a personal schedule for cleaning and develop some house-cleaning routines. Getting into the habit of frequent domestic cleaning drastically improves life at home for you and your family.

Although residual, we hope the act of throwing out multiple expired spices and odd supplies helps build your financial responsibility too.
