Óleo de Semente de Damasco

Sobre Óleos Botânicos

O uso de óleos botânicos pode ser rastreado há milhares de anos, com raízes em culturas tão diversas quanto os antigos sumérios, chineses e o Império Romano.[1]

Óleos botânicos são preparados a partir da planta inteira, preservando seu aroma, os principais ingredientes ativos e a essência da planta. Óleos botânicos feitos de várias plantas foram usados ao longo da história para honrar deuses,[2] preparar corpos para funerais,[3] preservar a beleza, auxiliar na higiene e tratar uma ampla variedade de condições médicas. Instruções para a preparação e uso de plantas como remédio estão catalogadas nas obras de Dioscórides, De materia medica[4], lá no primeiro século. A tecnologia moderna permitiu identificar e estudar as partes ativas das plantas por seu papel na saúde e sua utilidade contra várias condições médicas. O valor dos óleos botânicos resistiu ao teste do tempo.  

As Propriedades dos Damascos

Embora o damasco seja nativo do norte da China, seu nome botânico, Prunus armeniaca, foi dado pelos gregos, que acreditavam que ele foi cultivado pela primeira vez na Armênia. Os romanos chamaram essa fruta de praecocium, que significa “precocioso”, porque florescia cedo na estação, e desse nome evoluiu “damasco”.[5]

O óleo do caroço de damasco é muito semelhante ao de seu valioso primo, a amêndoa. O óleo de damasco é frequentemente usado no lugar do óleo de amêndoa amarga ou adicionado ao óleo de amêndoa para moderar o custo de produção, embora isso possa não estar indicado no rótulo.[6]  

 Tipos de Damascos

Geralmente, existem damascos doces e damascos amargos. Muitas variedades de damasco são cultivadas por diferentes razões, incluindo a época do ano em que amadurecem e diferentes propriedades do fruto, como sabor e textura.[7]
Damascos Doces e Damascos Selvagens
As variedades cultivadas - principalmente damascos doces e damascos selvagens - são geralmente amargas. O sabor das folhas e sementes era tradicionalmente usado como guia, embora o conteúdo das sementes tenha sido analisado e encontrado variações em gordura e nutrientes entre os cultivares.[8]
O óleo de caroço de damasco doce é usado topicamente como óleo de massagem e como aditivo em sabonetes e produtos para cuidados com a pele. O óleo de caroço de damasco doce tem um sabor profundo e amendoado, e o extrato é frequentemente adicionado a receitas.[9]
O caroço do damasco selvagem é amargo e contém quantidades variadas de amigdalina, dependendo da variedade,[10] assim como as sementes de outros membros da família Prunus, incluindo amêndoas, cerejas e ameixas. Quando a amigdalina é digerida, a interação com a água e as bactérias do intestino produz cianeto. Como esses componentes são tóxicos ou letais em doses muito pequenas, os caroços de damasco não devem ser consumidos a menos que tenham sido torrados.[11]  
Nutrientes
O damasco é cultivado mundialmente por seu sabor, valor medicinal e propriedades nutricionais. A fruta contém carboidratos, vitaminas A, B1 (tiamina), B3 (niacina), C, E e K, potássio, beta-caroteno e folato.[12][13]
Os caroços, que geralmente não são consumidos inteiros, mas usados por seus óleos valiosos, contêm até 22% de proteína alimentar. Os caroços são secos e transformados em farinha, que é rica em aminoácidos essenciais e fibras.[14]
As variedades doces de damasco contêm 40 a 50% de óleo, mais do que o caroço das variedades amargas. As gorduras encontradas no caroço do damasco são principalmente as gorduras insaturadas ácido linoleico e ácido oleico, que é um óleo emoliente e emulsificante comum em muitos produtos cosméticos.[15].[16]
O ácido linoleico, um valioso ácido graxo ômega-6 insaturado, é uma parte importante de uma dieta saudável rica em plantas.[17] O caroço de damasco tem semelhanças com as amêndoas, incluindo o conteúdo benéfico de gordura, fibra e proteína. Um estudo na Turquia examinou o uso da farinha de damasco para substituir a gordura em receitas de biscoitos para melhorar a qualidade das gorduras e aumentar o teor de fibras dos biscoitos. A farinha de caroço de damasco produziu um biscoito mais duro que teve alguma dificuldade em manter sua forma, mas os participantes acharam os biscoitos palatáveis quando 10 a 20% da gordura foi substituída pela farinha de caroço de damasco.[18]
A farinha é usada em um bolo tradicional servido em cerimônias de casamento na Índia.[19] O conteúdo de amigdalina dos damascos e seu sabor forte os tornam uma opção menos viável para consumidores nos EUA.[20] e seu consumo é desencorajado no Canadá.[21] 
Preparação do Óleo de Damasco

O damasco é uma drupa, como outros membros do gênero prunus, como o pêssego, a ameixa e a amêndoa. A camada externa aveludada é chamada de exocarpo, e a fruta carnuda é o mesocarpo. Essas camadas envolvem um endocarpo duro e lenhoso.[22] Dentro do endocarpo está a semente, ou caroço de damasco. O óleo de caroço de damasco é extraído dessa semente madura.

 

 

Expeller Pressed And Cold Pressed

Expeller pressing refere-se ao processo de quebrar lentamente os caroços de damasco sob pressão mecânica, como duas placas de metal giratórias, para liberar as gorduras.[23]

Cold pressed significa que o óleo foi prensado a frio a uma baixa temperatura. A baixa temperatura impede que o óleo estrague. O óleo de caroço de damasco produzido por um processo de prensagem a frio tem uma cor amarelo médio. Um óleo de cor mais clara será produzido se tiver sido refinado.[24] Uma variedade de métodos para melhorar a extração de óleo do valioso caroço de damasco foi explorada.[25] 

Na Índia, o método antigo de coletar o óleo é um processo trabalhoso feito manualmente. Técnicas modernizadas foram implementadas que produzem mais óleo, custam menos e exigem menos dos trabalhadores que produzem o óleo.[26] No entanto, essa modernização está realmente aumentando a demanda por óleo extraído manualmente porque o aroma distinto do óleo de damasco é muito mais forte quando coletado usando o método antigo, e acredita-se que isso representa um óleo mais seguro e mais potente.[27]

Extração por Destilação

A extração por destilação significa expor uma planta à água ou vapor para quebrar o material vegetal e liberar o óleo volátil ou essencial. Os óleos são resfriados e condensados para coleta.[28] A extração por destilação é usada para extrair óleos voláteis, incluindo amigdalina dos caroços de damasco. A amigdalina é destilada do bolo de caroços que sobra após a extração do óleo. Os bolos são aquecidos para liberar o óleo, depois resfriados e sementes frescas são adicionadas para fornecer enzima emulsina suficiente para hidrolisar a amigdalina. Se a temperatura estiver muito alta quando essa reação ocorre, a emulsina se decompõe e a amigdalina não pode ser liberada.[29]

Fontes comerciais de extrato de amêndoa podem ser feitas a partir de damascos, já que o conteúdo de amigdalina dos damascos é menor e eles são mais baratos e mais disponíveis nos EUA do que as amêndoas amargas. Como produzem menos amigdalina, o sabor é menos forte do que quando a amigdalina é extraída das amêndoas amargas.[30] 

Usos Medicinais do Óleo de Caroço de Damasco

Usos do óleo de damasco Na Medicina Ayurvédica e Chinesa. O óleo de caroço de damasco é tomado internamente e aplicado topicamente. Na antiga medicina chinesa e na medicina Ayurvédica (o sistema tradicional de medicina da Índia), acredita-se que o óleo de caroço de damasco combate o câncer e ajuda em condições de pele seca, incluindo eczema, psoríase e caspa.

Tanto a medicina chinesa quanto a Ayurvédica consideram o óleo de semente de damasco eficaz para limpar condições dos pulmões, como congestão.

O óleo pode ser tomado internamente ou usado em massagem para estimular a limpeza dos pulmões.[31] O óleo de caroço de damasco na medicina Ayurvédica é acreditado para ajudar a eliminar toxinas, sal e ácido úrico do corpo, ajudando em condições inflamatórias, incluindo artrite, dores nas costas[32] e retenção de líquidos. Na medicina chinesa, o óleo de caroço de damasco é usado para constipação.  

Cosméticos O óleo dos caroços de damasco absorve bem na pele e a amacia, tornando-se uma escolha principal para cosméticos e perfumes. As mesmas qualidades o tornam popular para a entrega de produtos farmacêuticos.[33]  

Massagem Usado topicamente, o óleo de caroço de damasco é ligeiramente oleoso, ajudando a mão do massagista a deslizar na pele, mas ele absorve bem. O custo é maior do que o do óleo de amêndoas, mas é frequentemente usado como substituto em clientes de massagem que são alérgicos a nozes.[34]

Pele A toxicidade da amigdalina nas sementes de damasco amargas pode ajudar a combater condições em que as células crescem excessivamente, como as placas que se formam na psoríase. Há algumas pesquisas que apoiam a capacidade do óleo de semente de damasco amargo de causar apoptose, ou morte celular, nas células que causam psoríase.[35]

A facilidade com que os óleos das sementes de damasco são absorvidos pela pele tem sido usada para administrar medicamentos analgésicos também.[36] Não existem estudos em humanos que apoiem o uso tradicional do óleo de semente de damasco para eczema.  

Antimicrobiano À medida que os antimicrobianos farmacêuticos enfrentam cada vez mais cepas resistentes de bactérias e fungos, o interesse em antimicrobianos vegetais está crescendo. O extrato da semente de damasco amargo inibe efetivamente o crescimento de Candida albicans e C. glabrata, assim como Staph aureus e E. coli. A semente doce também é eficaz contra esses microrganismos, embora com menor potência. Uma extração em metanol de uma variedade japonesa de damasco mostrou bons resultados no combate ao Helicobacter pylori.[37]  

Saúde gastrointestinal O óleo de semente de damasco tem sido estudado na medicina ocidental por seu efeito anti-inflamatório na Doença Inflamatória Intestinal, especificamente na Colite Ulcerativa. Em um estudo com ratos, o óleo de semente de damasco amargo mostrou a capacidade de reduzir a inflamação e melhorar as úlceras na Colite Ulcerativa. Parece que a amigdalina na semente de damasco atuou para suprimir as células que impulsionam o processo inflamatório.[38]  

Lutador contra o câncer? Laetrile, uma forma semi-sintética de amigdalina, também chamada de vitamina B17, tem sido objeto de grande controvérsia[39] por seu potencial para combater o câncer. Tanto o laetrile quanto a amigdalina contêm mandelonitrila, que contém cianeto. É o cianeto que supostamente pode matar as células cancerígenas. Assim como com a amigdalina, quando o laetrile é digerido, especialmente na presença de muita vitamina C, ele cria cianeto.[40] Por isso, o consumo de sementes cruas de damasco é desencorajado. Embora o laetrile ainda seja usado como terapia contra o câncer no México, onde o laetrile não é semi-sintético, mas realmente amigdalina derivada inteiramente das sementes de damascos amargos, ele é proibido nos EUA, devido a preocupações de segurança[41].

Uma revisão completa das pesquisas mostrou que o laetrile não é eficaz contra o câncer.[42] No entanto, a pesquisa sobre seu potencial continua, incluindo um estudo recente que sugere que a amigdalina pode impedir a metástase de células de câncer renal.[43]  

Você sabia? No campo em expansão das fontes alternativas de combustível, o damasco é uma estrela em ascensão. Ésteres metílicos dos óleos de caroço de damasco podem ser adicionados ao diesel para melhorar o desempenho do motor e criar emissões mais limpas.[44]  

Perguntas sobre óleo de damasco

O que devo procurar em um óleo de damasco? O óleo de damasco não refinado e prensado a frio terá o melhor perfil de nutrientes e gorduras. Deve ser de cor amarelo médio e ter um aroma mais forte de noz do que um óleo refinado. Um óleo refinado será mais claro e um pouco mais fino em textura, pois todos os sedimentos e impurezas terão sido removidos.  

Se eu for alérgico a damascos, posso usar óleo de damasco? O óleo de damasco é geralmente considerado hipoalergênico e é usado em peles sensíveis e como alternativa ao óleo de amêndoas para pessoas alérgicas a nozes. No entanto, se você tem alergia a damascos, ou se não tem certeza se tem alergia, o óleo de damasco deve ser evitado, mesmo como agente tópico. Consulte um médico sobre testes para alergia a damasco.  

É seguro usar óleo de damasco em crianças? O óleo de damasco é leve, de aroma suave e não irritante, tornando-o uma ótima escolha para uso em crianças. Se seu filho tem alergia a damasco ou se você não tem certeza se ele tem alergia, o óleo de damasco deve ser evitado, mesmo como agente tópico. Os damascos pertencem tanto à família do pólen de bétula quanto à família das rosáceas, que tendem a ser grupos alergênicos. Consulte um médico sobre testes para alergia a damasco.  

Posso cozinhar com óleo de damasco? Você pode cozinhar com óleo de damasco. Extratos do óleo dos caroços de damasco são frequentemente ingredientes em marzipã ou usados no lugar do óleo de amêndoas amargas. O óleo inteiro não é frequentemente usado na culinária porque a preparação comestível do óleo de damasco doce tem uma vida útil curta. Os óleos de damasco preparados para uso cosmético contêm mais antioxidantes para ajudar a prolongar a validade, mas não são destinados ao consumo.  

Qual é a validade do óleo de damasco? Mantido sob condições adequadas de armazenamento, o óleo de damasco dura cerca de seis meses a um ano. Antioxidantes como as vitaminas C e E são adicionados aos óleos de caroço de damasco usados em cosméticos ou óleo de massagem para protegê-los do estresse oxidativo que ocorre quando o óleo começa a ficar rançoso, prolongando sua validade. O óleo de caroço de damasco deve ser mantido em condições frescas, pois se deteriora em temperaturas mais altas.  

Cautela e Considerações Os damascos estão em um grupo de alimentos que podem causar síndrome da alergia oral.[45] Os outros alimentos deste grupo de alimentos relacionados ao pólen de bétula são maçãs, amêndoas, cenouras, aipo, cerejas, avelãs, kiwi, pêssegos, peras e ameixas.[46]

Se você tiver uma reação a qualquer um desses alimentos, consulte seu médico antes de fazer do óleo de caroço de damasco uma parte regular da sua dieta ou regime cosmético. Não consuma caroços de damasco crus. A quantidade de amigdalina presente nos caroços de damasco varia amplamente, e a quantidade de cianeto liberada pela amigdalina pode ser fatal.
