Informazioni sugli Oli Botanici

L'uso degli oli botanici risale a migliaia di anni fa, con radici in culture diverse come gli antichi Sumeri, i Cinesi e l'Impero Romano.[1]  Gli oli botanici sono preparati dall'intera pianta, preservandone il profumo, i principali ingredienti attivi e l'essenza della pianta. Gli oli botanici ricavati da varie piante sono stati usati nel corso della storia per onorare gli dei,[2] preparare i corpi per i funerali,[3] per conservare la bellezza, aiutare l'igiene e trattare una vasta gamma di condizioni mediche.

Le istruzioni per la preparazione e l'uso delle piante come medicina sono catalogate nelle opere di Dioscoride, De materia medica[4], già nel primo secolo. La tecnologia moderna ha permesso di identificare e studiare le parti attive delle piante per il loro ruolo nella salute e la loro utilità contro varie condizioni mediche. Il valore degli oli botanici ha resistito alla prova del tempo.  

Le Proprietà delle Arance

Si ritiene che l'arancia sia originaria delle zone tropicali dell'Asia, da cui si è diffusa in India, sulla costa orientale dell'Africa e nel Mediterraneo orientale. Lo sviluppo delle rotte commerciali arabe e la diffusione dell'Islam hanno portato l'arancia in tutto il mondo. Sebbene l'arancia sia un frutto tropicale, gli alberi crescono meglio dove in inverno c'è un leggero gelo.[5] Il nome originale per l'arancia deriva dalla parola sanscrita “naranga,” che a sua volta proviene dalla parola tamil “naru” che significa fragrante.[6]  

Tipi di Arance

Gli alberi di arancio sono gli alberi da frutto più coltivati al mondo, e ci sono diverse varietà o cultivar di arancio, il cui nome latino è Citrus sinensis. Diverse cultivar vengono coltivate in base a quanto bene prosperano in diversi periodi dell'anno e in differenti condizioni del terreno. Negli Stati Uniti, la California produce principalmente le cultivar “Washington Navel” e “Valencia”, mentre la Florida produce le cultivar “Hamlin,” “Pineapple” e “Valencia.”[7]

Le cultivar popolari elencate sopra sono arance dolci apprezzate per il loro succo. In tutto il mondo, i frutti amari vengono consumati per stimolare la digestione. Esistono diverse varietà di arancia amara, tra cui Citrus Aurantium coltivata in Vietnam, utilizzata in liquori come Triple Sec, Grand Marnier e Curacao. Il Daidai, varietà di C. Aurantium, è usato terapeuticamente nella medicina cinese e giapponese ed è scambiato durante il Capodanno giapponese per portare longevità.[8]

L'arancia amara di Siviglia è usata nelle marmellate per il suo alto contenuto di pectina, e l'arancia chinotto è un aroma in liquori come il Campari. L'olio d'arancia è estratto dalle bucce di diverse varietà, tra cui l'arancia dolce Valencia, Citrus aurantium, e la varietà amara Bergamotto, il cui olio è un noto aroma nel tè Earl Grey.[9]

Nutrienti

L'arancia è un frutto famoso per il suo colore arancione brillante e ricco di vitamina C, e infatti ogni tazza di fette d'arancia fornisce quasi 100 mg di vitamina C. I suoi nutrienti meno noti includono potassio, fosforo, magnesio, folato e vitamina A.[10]

L'arancia contiene anche una gamma di acidi grassi, principalmente acidi grassi insaturi, tra cui linoleico, palmitico, linolenico e vaccenico.[11] L'alcaloide principale nelle arance amare è la para-sinefrina.[12] La pectina è una fibra solubile in acqua che si trova in frutta e verdura. È ricca nell'arancia, in parte proveniente dalla polpa dell'arancia, ma più presente nella buccia. Nella pianta stessa, la pectina aiuta a legare insieme le cellule vegetali, sostenendo la forma del frutto.

Col tempo, gli enzimi della pianta digeriscono la pectina, come si nota in un frutto che matura e perde rigidità. Il livello di pectina presente nelle arance varia dallo 0,25 allo 0,76 percento. È un intervallo ampio che dipende dalla varietà di arancia e dalla maturità del frutto.[13] La pectina, come fonte di fibra, abbassa il colesterolo[14] e aiuta a gestire la glicemia.  

Lo sapevi? arance

Il frutto dell'arancia matura mentre l'esterno dell'arancia è ancora verde. Attraverso la pratica della “decolorazione,” l'arancia utilizza l'etilene (l'ormone dell'invecchiamento delle piante) per far maturare le arance dopo la raccolta, creando il colore arancione brillante.[15] La decolorazione deve avvenire in condizioni attentamente gestite, altrimenti può portare a marciume e altri problemi per il frutto.[16]  

Preparazione dell'olio d'arancia

Gli oli essenziali dell'arancia sono estratti dalla buccia arancione brillante. Questa buccia esterna degli agrumi è chiamata “flavedo” ed è coperta da piccole ghiandole. Ogni ghiandola contiene una goccia di olio essenziale. Per estrarre l'olio organico, la buccia deve essere fisicamente rotta.[17] I componenti principali dell'olio d'arancia sono leggermente diversi tra l'olio di arancia dolce e quello di arancia amara.  

Espressione o spremitura a freddo

L'espressione si riferisce al processo di rottura lenta della buccia d'arancia sotto pressione meccanica per rilasciare gli oli dalle ghiandole della buccia. Questo processo utilizza l'ecuelle a piquer, o un apparecchio progettato per estrarre oli dalle bucce di frutta.

È iniziato in Francia come una ciotola foderata con aghi per pungere la buccia del frutto e un imbuto per raccogliere gli oli rilasciati. È stato modernizzato per adattarsi alle pratiche commerciali, ma utilizza gli stessi principi di foratura e agitazione della buccia.[18]

Gli oli di arancia amara sono ottenuti tramite spremitura a freddo.[19] Spremuto a freddo significa che l'olio è stato estratto a bassa temperatura. La bassa temperatura preserva l'olio volatile, che fornisce il ricco profumo della pianta. Il miglior rendimento dalle bucce d'arancia sembra venire quando la buccia è stata prima essiccata. L'olio raccolto varierà in composizione, a seconda della maturità della pianta e della varietà di arancia utilizzata.[20]

Tutte le varietà di arancia producono oli volatili molto ricchi dell'idrocarburo monoterpenico, limonene. Il sapore dell'olio deriva dai suoi idrocarburi sesquiterpenici. L'esperidina e altri flavonoidi sono abbondanti nelle bucce, ma si degradano rapidamente durante la lavorazione.[21]

Estrazione per distillazione

L'estrazione per distillazione significa esporre una pianta ad acqua o vapore per rompere il materiale vegetale e rilasciare l'olio essenziale. Gli oli vengono raffreddati e condensati per la raccolta. La distillazione è usata per l'estrazione dell'arancia, usando sia il frutto intero che la buccia.[22]

L'olio di buccia d'arancia distillato a vapore non conterrà il residuo ceroso che un olio spremuto a freddo avrebbe. Questo li rende meno propensi a intasare i diffusori di olio, macchiare i tessuti e, poiché sono meno biologicamente attivi, ne prolunga la durata.[23] La distillazione permette anche di rimuovere i furocumarini dagli oli di arancia.

I furocumarini sono stati trovati fotocancerogeni, il che significa che quando questi composti sono esposti alla luce, possono causare mutazioni nelle cellule che portano al cancro. Questo è importante per i prodotti per la pelle da lasciare in posa che potrebbero essere profumati con olio di arancia. La tossicità non si osserva nei prodotti da risciacquare,[24] ma ci sono alcune evidenze che bere regolarmente succo d'arancia causa fotosensibilità che può portare al cancro della pelle.[25]

Medicina Tradizionale Cinese e Usi dell'Olio di Arancia

Le bucce sia di C. Aurantium che del mandarino più dolce (Citrus reticulate) sono utilizzate nella medicina cinese. L'arancia è considerata efficace per liberare le ostruzioni.[26] Le bucce sono principalmente usate per migliorare la digestione, alleviando gas e gonfiore. Quando i sintomi di disturbi digestivi, come diarrea o stitichezza, si presentano insieme a sintomi respiratori di catarro e congestione toracica, le scorze di arancia amara vengono usate per trattarli insieme.[27]  



Antimicrobico topico

Con la diffusione del problema degli organismi resistenti agli antimicrobici, è aumentato l'interesse per le fonti vegetali di antifungini, antibiotici e agenti antivirali. L'olio di arancia amara è stato studiato per il suo successo nel trattamento delle infezioni microbiche, come il piede d'atleta e la tigna. L'olio d'arancia ha dimostrato un'efficacia promettente contro i funghi,[28] anche se usato come olio puro può essere un po' irritante per la pelle.[29] L'olio di arancia Valencia spremuto a freddo e privo di terpeni e un estratto di limonene inibiscono entrambi la crescita di specie di Campylobacter e Arcobacter di germi.[30]  



Aromaterapia

L'olio essenziale profumato d'arancia ha dimostrato di ridurre l'ansia prima degli interventi chirurgici, nei pazienti in attesa di procedure dentali,[31] e nei bambini sottoposti a cure dentali. Questi effetti non si basavano su autosegnalazioni, ma sono stati dimostrati da una riduzione della frequenza cardiaca e dei livelli di cortisolo salivare.[32]



In uno studio che ha confrontato le autosegnalazioni di ansia e la pressione sanguigna sistolica in pazienti esposti all'olio di neroli da C. Aurantium o placebo durante una colonscopia, è stato dimostrato che il cambiamento fisiologico di abbassamento della pressione sanguigna avveniva anche in presenza di ansia.[33]  



Salute cardiovascolare

L'arancia ricca di antiossidanti è utile per migliorare il flusso attraverso i vasi sanguigni. Il danno endoteliale causato dall'obesità è migliorato negli adolescenti a cui sono state somministrate capsule di C. aurantium essiccato per un solo mese. Sono necessari studi più lunghi, ma questo supporta un corpo più ampio di ricerche sui flavonoidi e antiossidanti abbondanti nelle bucce d'arancia e sulla loro capacità di riparare le pareti dei vasi sanguigni.[34]  



Perdita di peso

L'alcaloide principale nelle arance amare è il p-sinefrina ed è stato al centro di alcune controversie. Come ingrediente comune negli integratori per la perdita di peso privi di efedrina, ci sono raccomandazioni contro la sua sicurezza. Il p-sinefrina è un agonista beta, il che significa che aumenta la degradazione dei grassi e la produzione di energia.



Un agente simile, la meta-sinefrina, non si trova naturalmente nelle arance, ma a volte viene sintetizzata e aggiunta agli integratori per la perdita di peso. Mentre il p-sinefrina non si lega ai recettori nel corpo che aumentano la pressione sanguigna, la m-sinefrina lo fa.[35] Le preoccupazioni riguardo al p-sinefrina non sembrano essere ben fondate, ma persistono comunque.[36] La sinefrina dell'arancia amara è una sostanza vietata dalla National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).[37]  



Usi tradizionali

L'olio d'arancia è stato usato per migliorare il “sangue stanco”, probabilmente anemia, così come la stanchezza da infezioni virali, impurità della pelle, perdita di capelli, lividi, dolore e congelamento. È stato usato per diverse condizioni dell'occhio, inclusi palpebre gonfie e sanguinamento dalla retina. Probabilmente grazie alla sua azione antimicrobica, è stato usato per trattare le piaghe da decubito.[38]  


Domande sull'olio d'arancia

Che cosa devo cercare in un olio d'arancia? Gli oli essenziali di arancia spremuti a freddo sono generalmente di colore chiaro, ma possono variare a seconda del periodo dell'anno e del tipo di arancia utilizzata. Dovrebbe avere un forte profumo di arance, anche se l'olio di neroli da arance amare può avere un aroma diverso da quello agrumato previsto. Se l'olio è stato distillato, sarà chiaro e potrebbe essere più fluido di un olio spremuto, poiché tutte le cere e i residui saranno stati rimossi durante la lavorazione. Se lo usi come agente topico che rimarrà sulla pelle, cerca un olio d'arancia privo di psoraleni.   

Se sono allergico agli agrumi, posso usare l'olio d'arancia? Se sei allergico a qualsiasi tipo di agrume, o se non sei sicuro di avere un'allergia agli agrumi, l'olio d'arancia dovrebbe essere evitato, anche come agente topico. La reazione IgE che si verifica in caso di allergia all'arancia sembra causare una reazione crociata con il polline, quindi se sai di avere una forte allergia al polline, parla con il tuo medico prima di provare l'olio di agrumi.[39]  

È sicuro usare l'olio d'arancia sui bambini? Non usare l'olio d'arancia sulla pelle dei bambini se saranno esposti al sole. Può aumentare il rischio di scottature e cancro della pelle. L'arancia, appartenente alla famiglia degli agrumi, è un allergene comune, quindi osserva attentamente eventuali segni di reazione allergica. Non usare mai olio d'arancia non diluito sulla pelle e controlla sempre eventuali irritazioni quando usi preparati con oli essenziali sulla pelle. Le allergie possono svilupparsi nel tempo. Non somministrare mai oli essenziali internamente a un bambino. Una goccia di olio essenziale diluita in un olio vettore applicata sui piedi è sufficiente per ottenere i benefici per un bambino.  

Quanto dura la conservazione dell'olio d'arancia? Conservato in condizioni adeguate, l'olio d'arancia dura solo circa nove-dodici mesi. Deve essere conservato in una bottiglia scura e in un luogo fresco e buio, poiché la luce e il calore lo ossidano. Controlla la presenza di torbidità o di un odore sgradevole come segni di deterioramento.  

Posso usarlo sulla mia pelle? L'olio d'arancia da solo è molto irritante per la pelle. Anche quando usato come antifungino topico, dovrebbe essere diluito per rappresentare solo il 25 percento o meno della soluzione. L'olio d'arancia sulla pelle esposta al sole è fotosensibilizzante, potenzialmente aumentando il rischio di scottature, e fotocancerogeno, potenzialmente aumentando il rischio di cancro della pelle. Questo non si verifica con l'uso di prodotti che si risciacquano, come shampoo o saponi, poiché questi non lasciano i furocumarini sulla pelle. Usa cautela con gli oli d'arancia in prodotti usati sulla pelle esposta al sole, come le lozioni.  

Avvertenze e considerazioni

Usa cautela con l'olio d'arancia o qualsiasi olio di agrumi sulla pelle. Sono fotosensibilizzanti e possono aumentare il rischio di scottature o il rischio di cancro della pelle. Se sei ad alto rischio di cancro della pelle, potrebbe esserci motivo di essere cauti con il consumo di succo d'arancia, poiché gli oli presenti nel succo e nella polpa possono essere anch'essi fotosensibilizzanti.

Mentre il succo d'arancia è sicuro da bere, non assumere mai oli essenziali per via interna. Il succo d'arancia, come il suo parente agrume pompelmo, può influenzare il modo in cui metabolizzi i farmaci. Se stai assumendo farmaci, chiedi al tuo medico qual è un livello sicuro di consumo di succo d'arancia per te.  

 Mi è stato insegnato - e ci sono informazioni da Robert Tisserand - che l'olio di arancia dolce non è fototossico. Le precauzioni di sicurezza da adottare per l'arancia amara non sono necessarie con l'arancia dolce.
