Informazioni sugli Oli Botanici

L'uso degli oli botanici può essere fatto risalire a migliaia di anni fa, con radici in culture tanto diverse quanto gli antichi Sumeri, i Cinesi e l'Impero Romano.[1] Gli oli botanici sono preparati dall'intera pianta, preservandone il profumo, i principali ingredienti attivi e l'essenza della pianta. Gli oli botanici ricavati da varie piante sono stati usati nel corso della storia per onorare gli dei,[2] preparare i corpi per i funerali,[3] preservare la bellezza, aiutare con l'igiene e trattare una vasta gamma di condizioni mediche. Le istruzioni per la preparazione e l'uso delle piante come medicina sono catalogate nelle opere di Dioscoride, De materia medica[4], già nel primo secolo. La tecnologia moderna ha permesso di identificare e studiare le parti attive delle piante per il loro ruolo nella salute e la loro utilità contro varie condizioni mediche. Il valore degli oli botanici ha superato la prova del tempo.  

Le Proprietà del Limone

Dall'India all'Italia, l'importanza degli agrumi tocca ogni continente e attraversa dalla tavola della cucina all'armadietto dei medicinali. Gli alberi di agrumi più antichi crescevano in Asia e il limone moderno è stato effettivamente creato da una serie di ibridazioni tra cedro e arancio amaro[5]°, probabilmente in India.[6] Entro il 1° secolo secolo d.C., i limoni erano arrivati in Italia e comparivano nei mosaici romani del Nord Africa. La loro coltivazione fu descritta nel trattato arabo sull'agricoltura di Qustus al-Rumi nel 10° secolo secolo, e i cantonese registrarono gli usi del limone nel 12° secolo secolo. Il medico personale del leader musulmano Saladino scrisse un trattato sul limone alla fine del 12° secolo secolo. Nonostante il soprannome “limeys” con cui divennero noti, la marina britannica usava limoni dolci, non lime, per combattere lo scorbuto in mare nel 18° secolo secolo.[7] Cristoforo Colombo portò i primi semi di limone a Hispaniola nel 1493, e gli esploratori spagnoli li portarono a St. Augustine, in Florida. Oggi, la maggior parte della fornitura mondiale di limoni è coltivata in Italia e in California.[8]  

Tipi di Limoni

Il limone è nato come un ibrido e continua a evolversi. Il limone che è più probabile acquistare in un negozio di alimentari è il limone Meyer, apprezzato per la sua versatilità in cucina.[9] Esistono circa 17 varietà riconosciute di limone, il cui nome latino è Citrus Limon. Sebbene gran parte della letteratura sugli usi dei limoni non specifichi la specie utilizzata, c'è un interesse crescente nel determinare la purezza e l'origine di alcune specie di limone,[10] quali condizioni ottimizzano l'olio prezioso ottenuto nel processo di estrazione[11] e quali sono più potenti medicinalmente.[12] 


Nutrienti

L'estrema acidità del limone viene assunta in piccole dosi, ma quella piccola dose è carica di nutrienti. A basso contenuto calorico, il limone è due volte più ricco di vitamina C rispetto alle arance e contiene una quantità molto elevata di potassio. I limoni contengono anche bioflavonoidi e antiossidanti come beta-criptoxantina, luteina e zeaxantina. Sono presenti anche le vitamine A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, folati e calcio.[13]

La buccia del limone è anche nutrizionalmente preziosa. Solo 1 cucchiaio di buccia contiene 9,6 mg di potassio, 8 mg di calcio, 7,7 mg di vitamina C e 0,6 g di fibra. La buccia contiene anche magnesio, fosforo, steroli vegetali e acidi grassi essenziali. È più apprezzata per i suoi flavonoidi, che hanno forti proprietà antiossidanti.  

Preparazione dell'olio di limone

Gli oli essenziali del limone sono estratti dalla buccia giallo brillante. Questa buccia esterna è chiamata “flavedo” ed è coperta da piccole ghiandole. Ogni ghiandola contiene una goccia di olio essenziale. Per estrarre l'olio organico, le ghiandole della buccia devono essere fisicamente rotte.[14] I principali oli volatili nelle bucce di limone sono limonene, alfa-terpinene, alfa-pinene[15], e i principali polifenoli nelle bucce di limone sono eriocitrina, esperidina, narirutina e diosmina.  

Espressione o spremitura a freddo

L'espressione si riferisce al processo di rottura lenta della buccia di limone sotto pressione meccanica per rilasciare gli oli dalle ghiandole della buccia. Questo processo utilizza l'Ecuelle a piquer, o un apparecchio progettato per estrarre oli dalle scorze di frutta. È iniziato in Francia come una ciotola rivestita di aghi per pungere la buccia del frutto, e un imbuto per raccogliere gli oli rilasciati. È stato modernizzato per adattarsi alle pratiche commerciali, ma utilizza gli stessi principi di pungere e agitare la scorza.[16]

Cold-pressed significa che l'olio è stato spremuto a bassa temperatura. La bassa temperatura preserva l'olio volatile, che fornisce il ricco profumo della pianta. L'olio prodotto varierà nel colore da un verde smeraldo intenso a giallo, a seconda della maturità della pianta e della varietà di limone utilizzata. Se l'olio è chiaro, probabilmente è stato usato il calore durante la lavorazione, anche se un aspetto torbido è probabilmente il risultato di germi o cera che si è precipitata dopo la lavorazione.[17]

Estrazione per distillazione

L'estrazione per distillazione significa esporre una pianta all'acqua o al vapore per rompere il materiale vegetale e rilasciare l'olio essenziale. Gli oli vengono raffreddati e condensati per la raccolta.[18] La distillazione viene utilizzata per l'estrazione della buccia di limone, anche se l'olio risultante manca del ricco colore e dell'odore delle bucce di limone fresche. Questo profumo più delicato può essere la motivazione per la distillazione a vapore, ma ha altri due vantaggi.

L'olio di buccia di limone distillato a vapore non contiene il residuo ceroso che un olio spremuto a freddo avrebbe. Questo li rende meno propensi a intasare i diffusori di olio, macchiare i tessuti e, poiché sono meno biologicamente attivi, ne prolunga la durata. L'altro risultato della distillazione a vapore è la creazione di un olio "senza psoraleni", ovvero privo di furocumarini. I furocumarini sono stati trovati fotocancerogeni. Quando questi composti sono esposti alla luce, possono causare mutazioni nelle cellule che portano al cancro. Questa correlazione tra l'uso di estratti di buccia di limone contenenti furocumarini e il cancro della pelle è stata esplorata per la prima volta nell'olio di limone come applicazione topica, come le lozioni, in studi su animali.[19]

Il modo in cui avviene questa fotocancerogenesi non è semplice, rendendo difficile sapere se tutto l'uso dell'olio di limone rappresenti un fattore di rischio per lo sviluppo del cancro della pelle.[20] Studi umani più recenti hanno rilevato un aumento dell'incidenza del melanoma,[21] carcinoma a cellule basali e carcinoma a cellule squamose nelle persone che consumano più agrumi, anche se questi studi si concentravano sui furocumarini provenienti da arance e pompelmi,[22] non specificamente limoni. Sono necessari ulteriori studi per comprendere questo fenomeno, ma crea valore per gli estratti di buccia di limone "senza psoraleni".

Usi nella Medicina Ayurvedica


Il limone è considerato il frutto più prezioso per preservare la salute.[23] È ampiamente utilizzato nella Medicina Ayurvedica, il sistema medico tradizionale dell'India. È venerato per le sue proprietà depurative. Seguendo uno stile di vita ayurvedico, si consiglia di iniziare la giornata con un bicchiere di acqua e limone. Si ritiene che ciò stimoli la digestione e purifichi il corpo. Il limone è anche usato per stimolare il sistema nervoso e il sistema immunitario. Le sue proprietà antimicrobiche sono impiegate per combattere virus, malattie infettive, infezioni all'orecchio e cellulite. L'olio di limone applicato localmente gestisce la pelle grassa.[24]  


Usi nella Medicina Cinese

Il limone è considerato un alimento rinfrescante nella Medicina Tradizionale Cinese, armonizzando lo stomaco e supportando la digestione. Sebbene il limone sia fortemente acido come frutto, è considerato alcalinizzante per il corpo, il che è estremamente prezioso in una società che segue una dieta ricca di carne.[25] Si ritiene che il limone reintegri i liquidi, inclusi i fluidi corporei esauriti e la sete non soddisfatta. Come nella medicina ayurvedica, è considerato depurativo per il fegato, i reni, il sangue, la bocca e le vie urinarie.[26]


Malattia di Alzheimer
L'Esperidina, un bioflavonoide presente nell'olio della buccia di limone, è stata trovata utile per migliorare i deficit cognitivi che si verificano nella Malattia di Alzheimer. In particolare, il cloruro di alluminio causa stress ossidativo nel cervello, influenzando memoria e apprendimento. L'Esperidina, somministrata agli animali contemporaneamente al cloruro di alluminio, ha prevenuto l'insorgenza dei deficit cognitivi.[27]Gli oli essenziali di buccia di limone usati in un regime di aromaterapia si sono dimostrati benefici anche per migliorare la funzione cognitiva nella malattia di Alzheimer negli esseri umani.[28]  


Stress e ansia

Gli oli essenziali di limone hanno contribuito a ridurre l'ormone dello stress cortisolo in uno studio condotto su ratti.[29] Annusare oli essenziali di limone può aumentare la frequenza cardiaca e migliorare le prestazioni mentali e fisiche nei test[30]Il profumo di limone migliora la sensazione generale di benessere. Le persone esposte al profumo di limone hanno riportato meno sintomi fisici rispetto a quando annusavano qualcosa di sgradevole[31]Le persone che hanno annusato oli essenziali di limone hanno mostrato un miglioramento maggiore del loro umore rispetto a chi è stato esposto al profumo di lavanda,[32] che è stata neutra nel suo effetto.  


Perdita di peso
Uno studio su 84 donne in premenopausa, assegnate a non apportare cambiamenti, seguire una dieta a bassissimo contenuto calorico con una bevanda placebo o una dieta a bassissimo contenuto calorico integrata con succo di limone per 7 giorni, ha mostrato risultati promettenti per i benefici del succo di limone. Oltre alla perdita di peso, avvenuta sia nel gruppo limone che placebo, il gruppo limone ha visto una riduzione dei marcatori di infiammazione e nessuna perdita di importanti parametri ematici come emoglobina o ematocrito.[33] Un effetto ancora più forte potrebbe essere osservato utilizzando i polifenoli presenti nella buccia.[34] Uno studio su topi obesi riguardo alla capacità di questi polifenoli di degradare il tessuto adiposo ha mostrato che l'aumento di peso è stato moderato quando i topi assumevano esperidina dalla buccia di limone contemporaneamente al cibo grasso.[35] Sono necessari ulteriori studi clinici per verificare se questo effetto sia valido anche per gli esseri umani.  


Prevenzione e Trattamento del Cancro

Gli antiossidanti sono da tempo riconosciuti per il loro effetto sul cancro, ma ricerche promettenti sono in corso sull'effetto di specifici componenti della buccia di limone. Uno dei flavonoidi del limone, l'eriocitrina, ha dimostrato di indurre apoptosi, o morte cellulare, nelle cellule della leucemia mielomonocitica acuta.[36] Il limonene è oggetto di studio per il suo effetto sul cancro al seno. È stato dimostrato che questo componente abbondante si concentra bene nel tessuto mammario e potrebbe avere un ruolo nel rallentare la progressione dei tumori al seno.[37] Come cura complementare, somministrati insieme alla chemioterapia, i polifenoli degli estratti di limone hanno protetto gli organi dagli effetti tossici della chemioterapia.[38]  


Salute Orale
L'olio estratto dalla buccia dei limoni contiene diversi composti, tra cui 8-geranilossipsolaren, 5-geranilossipsolaren e 5-geranilossi-7-metossicumarina che sono antimicrobici. Questi composti, abbondanti nell'olio essenziale di buccia di limone, uccidono germi come streptococcus mutans, che causano carie e parodontite.[39]  


Usi Tradizionali
L'azione antimicrobica e l'impatto positivo sull'umore contribuiscono alla popolarità del limone nei prodotti per la pulizia. Il limone è astringente, il che significa che stringe i tessuti. Questo aiuta a ridurre il dolore di un mal di gola gonfio quando il limone viene bevuto in acqua calda.

Cosa dovrei cercare in un olio di limone? Gli oli essenziali di limone spremuti a freddo possono variare dal verde brillante al giallo e dovrebbero avere un forte profumo di limone. Se sono stati distillati, saranno chiari e potrebbero essere più liquidi, poiché tutte le cere e i residui saranno stati rimossi durante la lavorazione.  


È sicuro usare l'olio di limone sui bambini? Non usare l'olio di limone sulla pelle dei bambini se saranno esposti al sole. Può aumentare il rischio di scottature o cancro della pelle. Sebbene altri membri della famiglia degli agrumi siano allergeni comuni, il limone di solito non lo è, ma osserva sempre eventuali irritazioni quando usi oli essenziali sulla pelle. Le allergie possono svilupparsi nel tempo. Non somministrare mai oli essenziali internamente a un bambino. Una goccia di olio essenziale diluita in un olio vettore applicata ai piedi è sufficiente per ottenere i benefici per un bambino.  


Posso cucinare con l'olio di limone? Assolutamente! L'estratto di limone è un ingrediente popolare nelle ricette di pasticceria, e la scorza ricca di nutrienti viene spesso grattugiata come zest in cucina. L'olio di limone è popolare nelle salse per insalata e può essere preparato in casa[40] per una freschezza ottimale. Le proprietà medicinali e il profumo del limone si degradano con il calore.  


Quanto dura l'olio di limone? L'olio di limone ha una breve durata. Deve essere conservato in una bottiglia scura in un luogo fresco e buio perché la luce e il calore ossidano il limone. Anche nelle migliori condizioni, dura solo circa 8-10 mesi. Controlla la presenza di torbidità o un odore sgradevole come segni di deterioramento.  

Posso usarlo sulla mia pelle? L'olio di limone è molto seccante, quindi non è consigliato per l'uso su eczema o altre condizioni di pelle secca. Per questo motivo, è ottimo per trattare la pelle grassa. Ricorda che l'olio di limone sulla pelle esposta al sole è fotosensibilizzante (potenzialmente aumentando il rischio di scottature) e fotocancerogeno (potenzialmente aumentando il rischio di cancro della pelle). Questo non accade se si usa un sapone profumato con oli di limone, poiché il sapone rompe l'olio e non lascia i furocumarini sulla pelle. Usa cautela con gli oli di limone spremuti a freddo in prodotti usati sulla pelle esposta al sole. 

Avvertenze e Considerazioni

Usare cautela con l’olio di limone sulla pelle. È fotosensibilizzante e può aumentare il rischio di scottature o di cancro della pelle. Mentre il succo di limone è sicuro da bere, non assumere mai oli essenziali per via interna. Piccole dosi in un olio vettore sulla pelle o in cucina sono un ottimo modo per sperimentare i benefici della buccia di limone ricca di nutrienti.
