Informazioni sugli oli botanici

L’uso degli oli botanici risale a migliaia di anni fa, con radici in culture diverse come gli antichi Sumeri, i cinesi e l’Impero Romano.[1]

Gli oli botanici sono preparati dall’intera pianta, preservandone il profumo, i principali ingredienti attivi e l’essenza. Gli oli botanici ricavati da varie piante sono stati usati nel corso della storia per onorare gli dei,[2] preparare i corpi per i funerali,[3] preservare la bellezza, aiutare l’igiene e trattare una vasta gamma di condizioni mediche. Le istruzioni per la preparazione e l’uso delle piante come medicine sono catalogate nelle opere di Dioscoride, De materia medica[4], già nel primo secolo.

La tecnologia moderna ha permesso di identificare e studiare le parti attive delle piante per il loro ruolo nella salute e la loro utilità contro varie condizioni mediche. Il valore degli oli botanici ha superato la prova del tempo.  

Le proprietà dell’onagra

L’onagra è un fiore selvatico che ha avuto origine in America Centrale e Messico circa 70.000 anni fa e si è diffuso verso nord, crescendo in tutto il territorio degli Stati Uniti, in particolare lungo le rive dei fiumi e nei terreni sabbiosi. È una pianta da fiore i cui fiori gialli si aprono solo di sera, da cui il nome.[5]

I coloni europei portarono la radice in Inghilterra e Germania, dove veniva consumata come alimento, e in Italia, da dove si diffuse in tutta Europa. È citata per la prima volta in un riferimento botanico nel 1587, e durante il XVIsecolo nel secolo fu soprannominata “cura universale dei re” per la sua utilità in molte malattie. Il suo nome latino, Oenothera, significa “una pianta il cui succo può causare sonno”, catturando le sue qualità sedative.[6] I nativi americani strofinavano l’onagra sui loro mocassini per mascherarne l’odore e avvicinarsi agli animali. Si credeva portasse fortuna nella caccia, forse per questo motivo.[7]  

Nutrienti

L’intera pianta di onagra può essere usata come alimento. La radice dal sapore di noce era consumata dai nativi americani[8] e gli inglesi[9] e i tedeschi lo chiamavano Rapunzel[10] e lo preferivano come più nutriente della carne di manzo.[11] Le foglie giovani possono essere mangiate crude nelle insalate.

Le foglie diventano molto amare, ma possono essere cotte in più cambi d’acqua per renderle più appetibili. I semi commestibili sono stati usati per sostituire i semi di papavero. È dai semi che si estrae il prezioso olio di onagra. L’olio di semi è l’unica parte della pianta ancora consumata regolarmente, e gli acidi grassi essenziali sono gli unici nutrienti della pianta che sono stati studiati.

I grassi dell’onagra sono acidi grassi essenziali. I nutrienti essenziali sono quelli che il corpo non può produrre da solo - devono essere assunti con la dieta. L’acido linoleico, l’acido grasso dominante nell’olio di onagra, è anche abbondante nelle verdure a foglia verde, nei semi e nella frutta secca.[12]

Sebbene gli acidi grassi omega-3 siano più noti per i loro benefici per la salute, la dieta e la salute di pelle e capelli richiedono un equilibrio tra acidi grassi omega-6 e omega-3. La dieta americana tende a contenere una grande quantità di omega-6, che possono convertirsi in acido arachidonico infiammatorio, specialmente quando la loro fonte è la carne. Le fonti vegetali di acidi grassi omega-6 si convertono in acido gamma-linolenico, che è antinfiammatorio, prima di diventare acido arachidonico.[13]

Mentre l'olio di enotera contiene principalmente acido linoleico, contiene anche fino al 10% di acido gamma-linolenico (GLA).[14] Il GLA nel corpo si converte in dihomo-GLA (DGLA), che è antinfiammatorio, prima di diventare acido arachidonico. La conversione richiede adeguati livelli di magnesio, zinco e vitamine C, B3 e B6.[15] Il GLA è abbondante nel latte materno umano, dove sembra aiutare a gestire il livello di IgE, un immunoglobulina associata alle allergie.[16] Oltre al latte materno, il GLA è scarso nella dieta, presente solo nei semi di ribes nero, borragine e nella spirulina.[17]

L'olio di enotera contiene anche acido oleico, palmitico e stearico. Questi grassi contribuiscono alla natura emolliente dell'olio di enotera, che lo rende utile nei cosmetici, ma sono abbondanti in molte piante. Allo stesso modo, l'EPO è una fonte di steroli vegetali, utili per abbassare il colesterolo, ma ampiamente disponibili in altri alimenti vegetali. L'enotera è principalmente apprezzata per il suo alto contenuto di GLA.[18]  

Preparazione dell'olio di enotera

Spremuto a freddo

La spremitura a freddo si riferisce al processo di lenta rottura dei semi di enotera sotto pressione meccanica, come due piastre metalliche rotanti, per rilasciare i grassi. Spremuto a freddo significa che l'olio è stato estratto a bassa temperatura.

La bassa temperatura previene il deterioramento dell'olio[19] e aiuta a mantenere le proprietà benefiche della pianta, inclusi gli steroli vegetali.[20] La volatilità dei composti preziosi estratti rende il processo molto delicato e deve essere eseguito in un intervallo di temperatura ristretto.[21]

Estrazione con solvente

La quantità di olio raccolta dai semi di enotera è piuttosto bassa, ma molto preziosa. La quantità di olio raccolta aumenta notevolmente utilizzando un solvente come l'esano durante il processo di estrazione. L'esano viene poi rimosso sotto pressione a basse temperature.

Nel tentativo di eliminare completamente il rischio di esposizione al solvente, diverse aziende hanno esplorato metodi alternativi. Uno di questi è l'estrazione con fluidi supercritici usando anidride carbonica. Questo comporta l'estrazione dell'olio sotto condizioni di temperatura e pressione attentamente monitorate, utilizzando l'anidride carbonica per estrarre la massima quantità di olio.[22]

Usi medicinali dell'olio di enotera

Usi nella medicina ayurvedica e cinese

L'olio di enotera è considerato rinfrescante e nutriente nella medicina ayurvedica, il sistema tradizionale di medicina dell'India, rendendolo utile per condizioni infiammatorie. Viene utilizzato in caso di eczema, allergie, malattie autoimmuni e carenze immunitarie.[23]

Sia la medicina ayurvedica che la medicina tradizionale cinese riconoscono il valore dell’olio di onagra per gestire i cicli riproduttivi femminili e, nella medicina cinese, viene usato per muovere il sangue e migliorare la circolazione.[24]  

Salute femminile

L’olio di onagra è molto ricercato come aiuto per la salute femminile, inclusi i cisti al seno e il dolore (chiamato anche mastalgia).[25] È anche utile per la sindrome premestruale[26], l’ipertensione in gravidanza, facilitare il parto[27] e gestire le vampate di calore in menopausa[28]. È necessario condurre studi più ampi[29] per confermare il suo beneficio nel trattamento, ma l’azione antinfiammatoria dell’onagra supporta i suoi usi tradizionali per queste condizioni.[30]

Eczema

Dal 1930 i ricercatori ritengono che una carenza di acidi grassi essenziali (EFA) o un’anomalia del loro metabolismo sia alla base dell’eczema. Le persone con eczema hanno molto acido linoleico, ma potrebbero avere difficoltà a convertirlo in GLA antinfiammatorio. Se ciò è vero, dovrebbe essere utile integrare con olio di onagra ricco di GLA.[31]

Gli studi non hanno mostrato benefici costanti, ma potrebbe essere una questione di trovare la dose giusta da usare.[32] Può essere utile per gestire gli effetti collaterali dell’isotretinoina, un farmaco per l’acne.[33] Sono necessari ulteriori studi per determinarne l’efficacia.

Salute cardiovascolare

L’olio di onagra è stato trovato utile per il dolore e la perdita di funzione nervosa associati alla neuropatia diabetica. I risultati richiedevano l’assunzione di una dose elevata di olio per sei mesi e funzionavano meglio in persone con glicemia ben regolata.[34]

L’onagra può essere utile anche per gestire la glicemia nelle donne con diabete gestazionale. Sono necessari ulteriori studi.[35] Poiché favorisce la circolazione, c’è interesse nel suo potenziale nel migliorare i sintomi della malattia di Raynaud, ma anche in questo caso sono necessari ulteriori studi.  

Artrite

Gli acidi grassi essenziali sono stati studiati per la loro capacità di alleviare il dolore dell’artrite. I grassi nell’olio di onagra aumentano direttamente la quantità di DGLA nel sangue. La DGLA è un grasso fortemente antinfiammatorio che dovrebbe ridurre il dolore e proteggere le articolazioni.

Alcuni studi sono promettenti, ma sono necessarie ulteriori prove prima che l’onagra possa essere raccomandata come trattamento di prima linea per l’artrite reumatoide.[36]  

Cosmetici

L’olio di onagra è utilizzato in prodotti cosmetici come saponi e lozioni. Si assorbe bene nella pelle e la ammorbidisce infondendo i suoi oli benefici. Applicato localmente, viene spesso usato insieme a un olio vettore che ne migliora la stabilità.[37]  

Usi tradizionali

I nativi americani usavano le foglie dell’onagra per preparare impacchi per curare lividi ed emorroidi. Era considerata un rimedio per reumatismi, paralisi e gotta. L’intera pianta, preparata come tè o tintura, veniva usata come sedativo per l’insonnia, l’irrequietezza e per calmare i polmoni in caso di congestioni come la bronchite.[38]

Il suo uso per l'irrequietezza probabilmente ha portato alla moderna ipotesi che sia utile per l'ADHD, ma non ci sono ancora abbastanza ricerche che dimostrino questo effetto. È stato anche usato per aiutare il corpo a riprendersi dagli effetti di un eccesso di alcol.[39]  

 

Domande sull'olio di enotera

Cosa devo cercare in un olio di enotera? La maggior parte dell'olio di enotera viene venduta in capsule. Il GLA è abbastanza instabile e irrancidisce rapidamente, quindi cerca prodotti a cui sia stato aggiunto un antiossidante, come la vitamina E. Usa produttori di cui ti puoi fidare. Ci sono molti casi in cui l'olio di enotera nelle capsule è stato sostituito da oli meno costosi come quello di soia o di cartamo.[40]  

Posso essere allergico all'olio di enotera? Le allergie all'enotera sono rare, ma possibili. Se sai di essere allergico ai fiori di enotera o al GLA, non usare l'enotera né topicamente né internamente. Consulta il tuo medico per un test allergico all'enotera o ad altre piante della famiglia delle Onagraceae.  

È sicuro usare l'olio di enotera sui bambini? L'olio di enotera è stato studiato ed è risultato sicuro nei bambini. Non è un allergene comune, ma se tuo figlio è allergico all'enotera o ad altre piante della famiglia delle Onagraceae, non usare l'olio di enotera né topicamente né internamente come integratore nutrizionale.

Posso cucinare con l'olio di enotera? Non si usa l'olio di enotera per cucinare. È estremamente instabile a qualsiasi calore, ma la pianta è commestibile e nutriente. Le foglie giovani possono essere aggiunte alle insalate e le radici possono essere consumate. Un olio vettore come l'olio d'oliva potrebbe essere infuso con i fiori di enotera per catturare alcune proprietà della pianta. L'olio così ottenuto potrebbe poi essere usato come un normale olio d'oliva.[41]  

Qual è la durata di conservazione dell'olio di enotera? Molto breve! Conservato nelle condizioni adeguate, l'olio di enotera dura solo circa sei mesi. La vitamina E viene aggiunta all'olio di enotera per proteggerlo dallo stress ossidativo che si forma quando l'olio inizia a irrancidire, prolungandone la durata. Gli oli di enotera devono essere conservati in frigorifero e, quando usati in preparazioni, devono essere aggiunti dopo qualsiasi fase che preveda calore.  

L'olio di enotera non ostruirà i miei pori? L'olio di enotera è un buon emolliente, il che significa che è efficace nel rompere e ammorbidire la pelle. Tuttavia, i pori del viso possono essere più sensibili all'ostruzione da oli densi. Se tendi ad avere la pelle grassa, l'olio di enotera potrebbe essere meglio utilizzato su altre parti del corpo.  

Avvertenze e considerazioni

Ci sono alcune evidenze che l'olio di enotera possa aumentare l'attività convulsiva. Non usare enotera, olio di enotera o olio essenziale di enotera se hai l'epilessia o sei soggetto a convulsioni di qualsiasi tipo.

L’enotera può aumentare il sanguinamento, quindi non usarla se hai un disturbo emorragico o della coagulazione, stai assumendo farmaci anticoagulanti o stai per sottoporti a un intervento chirurgico. L’olio di enotera può causare disturbi gastrici, nausea, diarrea, feci molli o mal di testa.
