Parents always tell their kids, “That drink is going to damage your teeth!” While you may have thought they were just trying to scare you, your parents were actually right. Foods and beverages that are high in acidic levels can have adverse effects on your teeth and oral health.

Because of this, it is important to try to avoid or limit the amount of times that you eat or drink these items. This way, you won’t cause further damage to your teeth that can become irreversible.

How Do Acidic Foods Affect Your Teeth?

Don’t be fooled, sugary drinks and foods are not the only things that can harm your teeth. Acidic drinks are also one of the worst types of food and drinks to affect your oral health in detrimental ways.

Acidic foods, because of their high acidic level, can erode the enamel that protects your teeth from damage. Once this enamel is eroded and taken away, your teeth are more prone to bacteria, cavities, and infections.

Once tooth erosion begins, it can have adverse effects such as:

  • You may feel sensitivity when you drink hot, cold, or sugary drinks or foods
  • Your teeth may begin to turn a yellowish color rather than white
  • Your fillings may become changed or altered
  • You may notice getting more cavities or pain in your teeth
  • In extreme cases, you may form an abscess or your teeth may begin to fall out

Foods And Drinks To Avoid Or Look Out For

There are some specific foods and drinks that can cause an immense amount of damage to your teeth over time. Some types of foods and beverages that you want to be wary of include the following:

  • Citrus-Flavored Drinks
  • Soft Drinks and Carbonated Drinks
  • Sour Drinks or Foods
  • Tomatoes
  • Dried Fruits

How To Protect Your Teeth

If you find that you eat a lot of acidic foods or regularly drink acidic drinks and want to know how to protect your teeth without having to give them up, here are some tips so that your enamel can stay strong and healthy:

  • Wait an hour after eating to brush your teeth
  • Limit your consumption of soft drinks or use a straw
  • Sip and swallow - don’t let a drink sit in your mouth
  • Rinse your mouth with water or drink milk
  • Talk to your dentist

Overall, foods and drinks that are high in acid can cause damage to your teeth that can cause irreversible damage. This damage comes from the acid breaking down your enamel, leaving your teeth exposed and vulnerable.

If you can, try to limit the amount of acidic foods and drinks you intake. If you cannot do that, there are precautionary steps that you can take to protect your teeth from damage. You don’t want to risk getting gum disease or tooth decay because of the food you eat. Instead, take care or your mouth to ensure that it stays happy, strong, and healthy for the long run.
