What You Need To Know About Your First Time Donating Plasma

Donating plasma is a great way to help others. Medical facilities need plasma to treat a wide range of different conditions. Furthermore, you’ll have an opportunity to earn some extra cash. Here are a few things you need to know before donating for the first time.

Bring The Proper Documentation

If you show up without the proper documentation, the facility will not allow you to donate plasma. For starters, you should bring an up-to-date photo ID. Donation centers also require you to have proof of address. Acceptable proof includes postmarked mail, college enrollment verification, and lease agreements. To be on the safe side, be sure to carry your social security card as well.

Eat Well

Before your first time at the donation facility, be sure to eat a hearty meal. If you go on an empty stomach, you could start to feel woozy. Try to stay away from fatty foods, which can make your plasma cloudy. Some of the best iron-rich foods to eat include spinach, eggs, beans, and instant oatmeal. Also, be sure to drink plenty of water the night before. This helps your plasma to flow easily.

Set Aside Some Extra Time

If you’re in a rush, plan to donate plasma on another day. Your first visit is typically longer than usual. To ensure that you’re in good health, the center’s medical specialists must perform a physical exam. They will also need to test your blood for viruses. Medical facilities require sterile leukopaks that aren’t contaminated. Furthermore, you’ll be asked questions about your medical history.

Don’t Be Nervous

When doing something for the first time, it’s perfectly normal to be just a bit uneasy. However, don’t allow your nerves to get the best of you. Donating plasma is an easy process. While you’re donating, you can stay entertained by surfing the web or listening to music.

Be Aware That You Could Be Turned Away

Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to donate plasma. If you’ve recently gotten a new piercing, the facility may not accept your donation. Of course, you also must pass the physical examination. One of the most common problems is elevated blood pressure. If you have a high blood pressure reading, it could simply be a result of anxiety. The nurse will likely ask you to relax and recheck your blood pressure in 30 minutes.

Plasma donation can be very rewarding. However, be sure to prepare for your visit in advance. If everything is in order, the process will go smoothly.
