Dental cavities are one of the most common dental issues. Even so, its significance on dental health is very much ignored; hence people continue to suffer from cavities along with other dental issues. In the simplest terms, caries or cavities are holes in the teeth which are formed due to tooth decay. To avoid suffering from caries, it is important to understand the symptoms, prevention and treatment options available.

Symptoms Of Dental Cavities

Dental cavities will trigger tooth sensitivity, thus consuming hot/cold items will be difficult and painful. Some big dental cavities will also cause pain and discomfort, while the small ones usually do not. Dentists detect cavities with the help of various tools such as fluorescence, or fiber-optic transillumination, but at times they may also order an X-ray if the cavity is present between the teeth.

Prevention Of Dental Cavities

Dental cavities can surely be avoided if a few preventive measures are practiced:

Lower the amount and frequency of sugary foods/drinks to avoid bacteria.

Brush, floss and use mouthwash regularly.

Opt for dental checkups frequently to remove the cavities. The smaller they are, the less complicated the treatment procedure.

For reoccurring cavities consider placing plastic sealants.

Treatment Options Of Dental Cavities

To treat cavities, there are two suggested options.

Remineralization

Dentists can heal a cavity reversing the demineralization process. It is believed that oral bacteria and food dissolve the tooth enamel. As the tooth enamel becomes softer, calcium leeches out and forms a cavity. Remineralization can be accomplished by restoring the tooth's lost calcium with a solution containing phosphate and calcium. A researcher at the University of California claims teeth remineralize by 60 percent.

Restoration

Larger cavities cannot be remineralized, they need to be restored. For relatively smaller cavities, restoration is done via a filling but for larger cavities the tooth is covered with a crown. In cases where the cavity has infected a significant part of the tooth, extraction is recommended after which the teeth are restored with dental implants.
