If you work at a job that has you sitting at a desk for eight or more hours per day, it may sound to most people as if you can just sit back and relax. Unfortunately, that may not be true. Though not having to exert yourself much physically may sound good on the surface, the truth is your desk job may in fact be harmful to both your physical and mental health.

As to how this can be, here are some ways of which you might be surprised.

Shorter Lifespan from desk job

If you work at a desk job, you may be staring at a much shorter lifespan. According to doctors, sitting for long periods of time on the job can lead to increased risks of developing such serious conditions as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Worst of all, even if you are physically active away from the job, you still have an increased risk of developing these conditions.

Poor Posture from desk job

Like most people sitting at desks for hours each day, you're likely to slouch from time to time. In doing so, you put unnecessary stress on your spine, resulting in increased risk of suffering from arthritis or bursitis. If you experience back pain or shoulder pain, it's probably best to seek out the services of a chiropractor.

Bad Eating Habits from desk job

Many times when you are working at your desk, you may be too busy to get up and go out for a healthy lunch. As a result, you likely join many of your coworkers and send out for fast-food that you can eat at your desk. But by doing so, you are not only continuing to stay sedentary, but also eating food that is high in fat and cholesterol, increasing the chances you could develop heart disease.

Sick Building Syndrome from desk job

When you sit at your desk for hours on end day after day in an office building, you may be setting yourself up for what is known as Sick Building Syndrome. This condition, which is characterized by continued exposure to mold, germs, and toxic particles commonly found in recirculated air, can lead to significant problems with allergies, asthma, or other related conditions.

If you do sit at a desk for hours and hours during your workweek, do all you can to get up and move now and then. By changing positions every 10 minutes, stretching, or taking a few steps around your office, you can lessen the impact your desk job will have on your health.
