According to the Internet Stroke Center, roughly 795,000 Americans suffer strokes every year. They are the 3rd leading cause of death in the US, with more than 140,000 deaths annually attributed to stroke. In 2005, 1 out of every 17 deaths that occurred in the US was due to stroke. High blood pressure is the greatest risk factor for stroke, and while maintaining a normal range of blood pressure is important for all aspects of health, it is even more necessary when trying to prevent vascular incidents like stroke. There are some dietary supplementations that have been proven to help lower blood pressure, but none have ever been directly connected with incidents like stroke. However, new research conducted in France intends to prove otherwise.
Strokes is much more common among older people, and according to a French study of 7,000 people age 65 and older Scientists believe that regular use of olive oil may have preventative effects. The medical journal Neurology features their published study that shows people who use more olive oil in cooking or methods of consumption had lower rates of stroke. Researchers now believe that there should be new dietary recommendations for the elderly based upon their findings.
Olive oil has been known for quite some time to have possible health benefits. Other studies have shown it to help prevent oxidative stress, and are also believed to help prevent high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and because of that, heart disease. The American Cancer Society has even said that extra virgin olive oil can help fight breast cancer, of which a new case is diagnosed every 3 minutes in the US. Its hoped that this protective effect rings true in relation to stroke, but more research is needed.
