Many people fall off the health and fitness wagon when the holidays roll around. It’s hard to stay on track when you’re surrounded by seasonal imagery, scents and flavors of comfort food. However, the consequences of abandoning your healthy routine can negatively impact you far beyond the fall and winter seasons.
Here are six tips for keeping your goals in mind and maintaining a healthy lifestyle throughout the holiday season.
1. Fuel Your Body
The hustle and bustle of the holidays can quickly knock you out of your healthy routine. Before you know it you’ve swapped meal prepping for gift shopping and nutritious snacks for fast food. If you’re not careful, it may take a long time to get back to a balanced lifestyle.
Make sure to give yourself the time and space to make healthy choices. If you’re in a rush, supplements can go a long way toward keeping you fueled with vitamins and minerals. If you need more information about effective supplement regimens, check out Thrive side effects.
2. Make Deliberate Choices
Embracing the spirit of the season doesn’t mean giving in to all temptation. You can enjoy yourself while eating in moderation and remaining mindful of what you consume.
If you know your mom is making her signature pumpkin pie, plan to enjoy a piece, but maybe skip the pumpkin spice latte from your favorite coffee shop that morning. You’ll feel better and you’ll savor the dessert even more.
3. Be Present
When you’re super focused on your health goals, you can accidentally isolate yourself from family and friends at the time when you should be the most engaged. Don’t leave yourself out of the festivities because you’re worried about giving in to the temptation. It’s okay to partake and enjoy yourself.
The worry you feel about gaining weight is arguably worse for your overall health than that Christmas cookie you’re afraid to eat. The important thing is being there for your loved ones and letting them be there for you.
4. Avoid Stress
Stress takes a huge toll on your body, mind and spirit, and the holidays are a stressful time. When you’re anxious and overwhelmed, your body is unable to regulate the hormones that keep you in homeostasis, throwing off your entire state of being.
You may think you need those last-minute stocking stuffers or Christmas is ruined, but the truth is your friends and family would much rather have you relaxed, healthy and happy during the most wonderful time of the year.
5. Don’t Skip Workouts
Even though your fitness trainer and all your accountability partners are away for the holidays, you can still meet your mental and physical fitness goals. If you’re used to daily workouts, you should continue to fit them in so your body isn’t thrown off by the sudden change.
If you’re traveling, hit the hotel gym when you have a chance. If your house is full of visitors, enlist their support by taking the whole household out for a mid-day hike, bicycle ride or family football game. Regular physical activity will help you keep focused, energized and stress-free throughout the holiday season.
Additionally, don’t neglect your emotional health. If chaos is swirling all around you, take a minute to yourself, find a quiet space and center yourself mentally. A quick guided meditation, an aromatherapy candle or a hot cup of tea can help you calm your mind and allow you to make better decisions for yourself going forward.
6. Be Kind to Yourself
The worst thing you can do for your health journey is to constantly berate yourself when you fail. You may make plans to wake up early, exercise, cook, shop, entertain, clean and sleep for eight hours before doing it again, but you won’t always meet your own expectations, and that’s okay. Forgive yourself, adapt and move on.
These tips, combined with a bit of motivation and determination, will help you prioritize your health throughout the holidays and beyond.
