In this day and age, good mental health is vital to survival. The world tends to rush around you, making it feel impossible to get a foothold on anything. This constant stress can lead to problems such as depression and anxiety, so it's crucial to keep it under control.

One way that many people have learned to control their mental health is through acts of self care. Taking the time to manage your mental health is a great way to decompress from the stress of everyday life. If you're unsure how to begin a practice of self care, the following ideas may help you.

1. Take Some Time Outside

While society tends to associate self care with spending, some of the most effective self-care practices happen without losing a cent. One of these affordable yet effective practices is simply getting outside.

When you remove yourself from your stressful environment and spend some time outdoors, your body and mind reset to a calmer state. If you're feeling stressed and overwhelmed, grab some headphones and go for a long walk. The exercise and fresh air will do you wonders.

2. Detach From Social Media

Another addition to your self-care list can be logging off social media for a while. Although social media is entertaining, it often puts high pressure on you to be perfect. Whether or not you realize it, the constant swarm of curated perfection can add to your stress levels.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to perform, take some time away from social media. A break spanning anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks could give you the space to breathe.

3. Clean Up Your Space

If you're always coming home to a mess, you don't have a space to relax. For self care with immediate results, clean up your room. You don't need to deep clean everything anytime you're feeling stressed, but something as simple as taking out the garbage can help you feel less cluttered.

The next time you're looking for affordable self care, tidy up your home. Wipe down the counters, take the trash out, or even vacuum. Having a clean place to relax will help you feel safe and calm.

4. Learn Meditation or Deep Breathing

Of course, it may not always be possible to take time away to practice self care. By learning how to meditate and calm yourself through breathwork, you can have access to a calmer mind wherever you are. Whether you want to incorporate the spiritual associations or not, you can use your breath to calm both your body and mind.

Even in the middle of a busy workday, taking a few deep breaths and grounding your mind can help destress and declutter your mind.

5. Create Something Beautiful

Whether or not you're an artistic person, the act of creating something is a great way to practice self care. One common misconception surrounding art is that you must be talented to enjoy it. This concept is false.

Anyone can enjoy making something they like, no matter how talented they might be. If you're scared to create something from scratch, outlets such as coloring books or craft kits would be perfect for you. No matter how artistically talented you are, creating something is a great way to practice self care.

6. Journal Your Feelings

Finally, many people swear by journaling. During times of stress, it's important to express what you're feeling to someone else. Unfortunately, the nature of the stress often makes it difficult to talk to people. Rather than bottling up your feelings, write them down in a journal.

Journaling when you're upset allows you to talk about what's happening without the added pressure of having another person present. If you have trouble communicating when you're overwhelmed, consider journaling as part of your self-care routine.

In conclusion, you don't need to spend money to care for your mental health. By caring for yourself in the middle of your stress, you can eliminate potential problems down the line.
