With the new year here, it's time for people everywhere to begin making resolutions. Sadly, everyone knows that they are not always followed through.

Sure, people might begin strong with their resolutions, believing heavily that they are going to make the necessary changes to achieve a specific goal in life. But along the way, perhaps a couple of months into the year, situations begin to arise that take priority over our resolution.

However, there is one area that if worked on as a resolution could probably have a more lasting effect on people everywhere. If this subject is worked on in the new year, people will be more motivated to continue, because the effects will be phenomenal.

This year, it's all about the mental health of a person. Truly, when a person is happy in their mind and has that inner peace, it will make everything else around them fall into place.

Mental health is very important, but it's often overlooked during the making of new year's resolutions. But if people were to shift their focus on establishing good mental health, they just might achieve the other goals that they've been trying to reach. Here are five tips to get better mental health in the new year.

1. Have More Peace at Work

Face it. One of the biggest parts of everyone's life is work. It's the place where people spend a large part of their day, and for many, work dominates their life.

Many people think that taking vacations is the only way to keep sanity in their work life, but it's much better to find happiness and peace during your workday rather than run from work every chance you get.

To have a better employee experience, don't allow situations, customers and coworkers to have power over you by being able to bring you down. Simply enter your place of work, do the job and go home to enjoy the rest of your day.

2. Focus on the One Thing That Is Most Important

In life, there should be one thing that is the most important factor in your life. This could be your family, loved ones, career, finances, health or spirituality. It doesn't matter what it is that you find most significant, but all that matters is that you make sure to give time to it every day.

This year, commit to giving yourself mostly to this one aspect so that you can find happiness and have better mental health. When you focus on this one important aspect and give time, energy and resources to it daily, your mental wellbeing will be better off.

3. Do the Basics - Eat Right, Exercise and Sleep

Many people don't realize it, but a lot of their mental health issues stem from the basics. Who would have known that the reason people wake up cranky or have a poor attitude all day is that they haven't been eating well lately? Or maybe they have not gotten enough sleep.

This year, be sure to change your diet up, even if it's just a little bit. Watch what you eat and get more exercise in. Sleep at least eight hours. All of this might be a bit tough at first, which is why you should start off by making small changes. Later, it will be much easier for you to do these tasks for the long haul.

4. Learn to Communicate More Effectively and More Often

One of the reasons why people have mental issues is because they just don't let them out. Have you ever noticed that when you have an issue, you always just feel better when you simply get it out and talk about it with someone? This is because there is magic in communication.

Learn to be more expressive about your feelings this year and speak about them often to people you can trust. Also, learn to speak in a more effective way. This means that you watch what you say, be more influential and don't hurt others with your words.

5. Have Fun

Always remember to take time to slow down in life and enjoy what makes you happy if it doesn't hurt anyone else. If you enjoy going for walks, watching sports or spending time with your kids, be sure to make time for these events.

In life, people have to have fun and shouldn't be all about work most of the time. Take some time to have fun on the weekends and when you can, but also incorporate it into everyday life. Have fun at work and loosen up this year, and your mental health will thank you.

These simple hacks can help you stay mentally well in the new year. Make your mental health a priority and watch everything else fall into place for you.
