Nursing is a demanding career in which you spend all day caring for your sick patients. If you do not take the time to properly care for yourself during a travel assignment, you put yourself at risk for burnout.

Job burnout is an overwhelming burden experienced from the work that leaves you exhausted, stressed and questioning your career choice. Burnout is bad for your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, so it is crucial to understand what it is and how to avoid it.

1. Diet

Burnout can be exasperated when you feel like you do not have a lot of energy. Your diet can impact energy levels. It is important to eat breakfast before a shift or bring breakfast with you to start your day off with healthy fuel.

It is a great idea to pack healthy snacks and a bottle of water in your bag to have nutritious options to give you energy throughout your workday. You may wonder are oats gluten free and will they make you feel good throughout the day. The key is to pack foods full of nutrients that will keep you feeling full and energized all day long.

Drink water throughout the day, with the goal of consuming at least 64 ounces daily. Hydration is vital to help your body and brain reach optimal performance. It can also decrease headaches, improve energy levels and increase focus. Taking care of your body by eating a healthy diet and staying hydrated can help you feel your best as you work long shifts.

2. Stress Release

High levels of stress associated with your job can lead to burnout. It is normal to feel overwhelmed or behind on a new travel assignment as you become accustomed to a new hospital, new city, new coworkers, and new protocols. The more traveling you do, the more quickly you will learn to adapt to the sudden and drastic changes.

No matter how long you have been a nurse, there will always be a shift full of demanding patients, hard loss or other challenging events that will leave you frazzled and exhausted. Knowing how to cope with stress is an essential tool for avoiding burnout as a nurse.

Meditation and breathing exercises are two popular modalities for decreasing stress levels. For others, a relaxing bubble bath to unwind is a great way to cope. Set aside time for self-care, hobbies you enjoy and finding healthy ways to manage your stress daily so that you do not let it build up and negatively impact you.

3. Exercise

Working out is linked with decreased stress and anxiety levels, making it a prime option for preventing job burnout. Physical activity can improve your energy levels, help you maintain or lose weight and improve your confidence.

It is also a great way to take your mind off any other problems. Taking care of your body allows it to keep working its best for you.

4. Sleep

Sleep plays an integral role in our performance. If you are heading into a busy day with little sleep, you are more likely to feel exhausted during the shift. You may not think as clearly or react as quickly, which can be harmful in your line of work.

Get seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night by allowing yourself time to unwind and prepare to sleep, limiting screen time and creating a bedroom environment that is cool, dark and relaxing.

Conclusion

Nursing is a rewarding career. Travel nursing can provide a tremendous financial increase while allowing you to see different cities and gain new experiences. This field can be highly taxing on the body and mind.

Nursing is often associated with high levels of burnout and fatigue. You cannot care for your patients if you are not caring for yourself. Self-care, a nutritious diet, daily exercise and adopting healthy coping mechanisms for stress levels are all essential to avoiding burnout.

You work so hard to care for your patients, so make sure you are setting aside the time to take care of your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, too.
