Top Food Additives To Avoid

Trusted Health Products

With the end of the year approaching at record speed, its important that we have a good understanding of how to improve our health through diet alone. Now I know this may not be an exciting topic for the Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts we are currently participating in, but there is a way to have delicious food without harmful additives included. Even if you cant avoid them over the holidays, New Years is right around the corner and resolving to take your health more seriously is definitely a great commitment to make.

Artificial Sweeteners

Most people know to stay away from these. What they don't know is how commonly they are included in many foods labeled healthy or of the diet variety. The monster of them all, aspartame, is a downright killer. It is a neurotoxin and a carcinogenic combined. Elevated amounts of aspartame consumption have been linked to horrific conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer's, as well as emotional issues like anxiety and depression. Cognitive ailments like short-term memory loss and headaches also are a side effect of this sweetener. It is commonly found in diet sodas, desserts, chewing gum, cereal and toothpaste.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

Now, if you're like me and have a sweet tooth, these first two items on this list are a real bummer. But lets face it, sweets just lead to problems. One of the reasons for the inundation of sugar and sugar substitutes in our foods, is that it affects our taste buds and internal responses simultaneously. The reason we crave sugar is from all the times we've indulged in it. That indulgence encourages something called a bliss point which is optimal for palatability - which basically means we want it more. The right level of sweet, salt and crunch provoke this occurrence. High fructose corn syrup is likely an ingredient in most of those terrible, enticing junk foods that we crave so ceaselessly. This additive increases weight gain faster than any other ingredient. It also increases bad cholesterol levels.

Sodium Nitrates

This additive is used in many types of meats, namely lunch meats, hot dogs, ham, smoked fish, bacon and so on. Its main purpose is it acts as a preservative so that certain meats are able to last longer. However, the substance itself, while preserving the meat, can potentially wreak havoc on you internally, as its actually a carcinogenic and is considered toxic for the bloodstream. Interestingly enough, many people don't realize that there was a measure in place that actually was voted for by the USDA to eliminate all use of this additive to meat because it was so toxic. However, the measure didn't pass because food manufacturers complained that they didn't have access to any other option that would preserve their meat. Seems like a lousy trade, fresh meat or acute health?

While there are a ton of food additives that we should stay away from, these three are the most prevalent and commonly seen in the foods that we consume. Make conscious efforts to eliminate these and all other additives completely from your diet and see your health improve drastically.
