Any kind of bodily injury, whether it's from physical training or an accident, can be a literal pain to deal with. When you hurt yourself, it's important that you listen to your body and refrain from pushing yourself so you can heal. Here are some tips on the best ways to care for yourself so you can get back to your regular routine as quickly as possible.
Rest and Recover
A new injury requires a lot of rest. Your body needs plenty of sleep and good nutrition to heal. Try to stay off your feet and find a comfortable place to sit or lay down while your body works to repair itself.
Keep the injured sight clean and apply topical disinfectant to minor cuts and abrasions. You should keep a sprain wrapped and elevated if possible to help control the swelling. Put ice on the area and refrain from using heat until the inflammation has subsided.
Do Some Gentle Exercise
As you begin to heal, it can be tempting to want to jump back into your usual routine, especially if you are normally an active person. However, doing too much too soon will just cause further damage and could set back your recovery time. Don't do anything physical until your body is ready for it.
When you do feel able to increase your movement, stick to gentle exercise. Swimming is excellent for muscle therapy and won't put too much strain on your body. Time in the pool is fantastic exercise, not to mention fun, so you might want to check out the cost of an inground pool and have one installed at your home.
Visit Your Doctor
When an injury is more than just a mild bump, you should get it checked out by a doctor. You may need X-rays to check for broken bones. It's also possible that you tore something that will require more treatment than just a wrap or a few days of rest.
Untreated injuries can become worse and make the treatment more costly, longer, and even more painful. Make an appointment with your doctor or visit the emergency room to get checked out.
Focus on Your Mental Health
If you are used to an active lifestyle then being forced to rest and restrict your activity can take a toll on your mental health. It doesn't matter if you are into sports, you have a job that is physically demanding, or simply enjoy hobbies that are more active, any upset in your routine can also upset your mood.
This is especially true if your injury has a long recovery period.
In the event that an accident or injury keeps you immobile, you will need to find other ways to spend your time. You could focus on a hobby or even do some research into ways to improve your health when you are back on your feet.
Finding a few activities that support mental health can be a good use of your time. Take up meditation or learn some deep breathing techniques. These methods are good for your state of mind and can also boost your physical health. You will feel better when you take charge and have a new activity to focus on.
Get Support
If you find yourself becoming depressed or anxious due to your temporary limitations, then get some help. An abrupt change in your life can make you feel imbalanced and out of control. This is perfectly normal and there are ways that you can prevent it from becoming a bigger issue.
For short-term recovery, you can focus on other things and distract yourself until you are feeling better. If you have a long journey ahead of you, you may benefit from speaking with a therapist or a trusted friend to talk about your frustrations and concerns.
Recovering from an injury is tough, but there are ways that you can make it as stress-free as possible. Listen to the advice of your physician and allow your body the time it needs to recover fully.
