If you are looking to make changes in your eating habits in the new year, you are not alone. Many people commit to a healthier lifestyle in January, but few go beyond a month or two to stick to it. Here are some ways that you can continue your journey of making better food choices, without falling off the wagon.

Limit Processed Foods

Processed foods make up a huge portion of our diets, so it may be difficult at first to contemplate life without them in your food arsenal. However, these types of foods are, more often than not, high in sugars, fats, and carbohydrates, so they are not ideal if you are trying to change your eating habits for the better. If you eat a heavily processed diet, you may want to start out slow, and remove only a few processed items at a time to avoid your body feeling awful during the detoxification process. If you have some processed foods that are favorites, find suitable alternatives with whole ingredients.

Cut Back On Lectins

Lectins are great in small amounts, but like any other nutrient, they can be bad for you if you consume too many of them. Lectins in food often appear in the form of nightshades, such as tomatoes, legumes, eggplants, peanuts, wheat, and potatoes. One of the reasons why nutritionists and dietitians advise eating lectins in limited quantities is due to the fact that they prevent your body from properly absorbing nutrients, which can be detrimental if you have nutrient deficiencies. To take lectins out of foods you enjoy, try techniques such as pressure cooking and soaking them beforehand.

Have Healthy Snacks On Hand

One of the easiest ways to eat fast food and quick snacks is to not have access to healthy food on a regular basis. This can occur if you are busy carpooling your children to after-school sports, or if you simply have not had a meal all day. Therefore, keep nonperishable snacks in your car that will satisfy and fill you, but are still healthy. Good examples of these types of foods include nuts, whole grain crackers, dried fruit, or vegetable chips. When you have something to snack on, you are much less likely to pull into the drive through or chow down on a bag of candy from your vending machine at work.

Increase Fiber Intake

Many people do not get enough fiber in their daily diets, and this can cause a myriad of problems, ranging from less energy during the day to constipation. Fiber is absolutely essential for a healthier food plan, due to the fact that it makes consumers feel fuller longer. This way, you will have less of a temptation to snack on junk food in between lunch and dinner. In addition, fiber also helps to regulate the digestive system and increase its health, so that you will have easier and more regulated bowel movements.

Eat Smaller Meals Throughout The Day

When you are hungry in between meals, then it may be a better idea to change your meal plan, so that you can simply eat smaller meals more often during your daytime hours. For instance, try having a smaller breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with miniature meals in between that are filling enough to keep you satiated until the next one. You will have much less of a chance of overeating as a result, and you will also have fewer cravings for unhealthy foods that will give you a quick burst of energy. You can focus much better when you are not hungry all the time.

You do not have to feel intimidated or overwhelmed when you begin your journey of making better choices in terms of your diet. With these tips, you will be able to still have an enjoyable, fulfilling meal plan, while making conscious decisions that are much better for your health in the long run.
